The wife's golf needs a few hundred quid spending on it immediately as it is driving awful (been neglecting it for 2 years) Both the Golf & Soarer are due Tax at the end of the month too :cry:

Well today with some dry weather I got my arse in gear and got the engine & box pulled, servo removed also. Got the passenger seat out but the driver seat is firmly wedged in there. I'm going to need a hydraulic ram to push the door & b post outwards. I tried kicking it out myself by lying across the front and pushing with my back on the passenger door but it ain't moving.

Numerous cuts to my hands from all the glass all over the place inside. Oh the joy :-x

I've got no yardstick to measure the S50 manifold by Kos, I always had this fitted so can't say if any gains are there over a chopped up M52 manifold. The size of the primary holes in the flange are a fair bit bigger than the outlet ports on the head. It certainly made a good bark when under load.

It was a bit too loud with the sound proofing removed around the transmission tunnel and it really does give off some heat so I'm going to wrap the manifold I think.

the only other possible problem with the S50 manifold is I honestly don't think I can get an E36 rack in there, which is a major downer as I really couldn't believe how slow E30 steering is

I don't know of any diffs knocking about mate

I seem to remember when looking at the column UJ route that moving it any closer towards the block (which is where I believe the E36 rack pinion is) the shaft was going to conflict with the collector for the front primaries, so looks VERY difficult to just cut & mig.

Do i keep the manual rack in the chromie? :)

I quite like my manual rack mate. Loads of feel through the twistys. I am using the 36 box mate. I have a 3.15 M3 diff with 40% lock up quaife LSD pack. The crown wheel and pinion is fook though. (sold as mint grrrr).
I have a 2.93 diff but that won't be quick enough through the box.

I still reckon we could make some mods and get a 36 rack in the beatch. :cool:

What models of BMW will have the correct size wheel & pinion you're after?

PLenty of E36 & E34 scrap at my local yard, prob only cost about £20 for a diff from there

Dan what is likely to have the right diff?

How are you going to rape suspention off the touring lee?
Are you going to just swap it straight over? Maybe just look for some 40mm rear spring and leave the fronts built up. If you put the chromie gear back on he touring least it's mobile?

I reckon it'll get winched onto a tilt bed or the hiab will drag it to it's death.

Gonna get another pair of axle stands so I can have both ends in the air, then once everything I need from it is stripped off, it'll get dragged along the driveway :)

Can you use the ram out of your engine hoist with blocks of wood

When I bear shelled the last one, 5 of us carried it down the drive where a disco and farmers trailer was blocking our road. The shell sat ontop of the trailer with the sides up.
We had ques either sides. They though pikies had moved in. Ha ha

nice progress by the way. how warm was it up your way? it was positively tropical today (t-shirt weather!) but dropped back below freezing once the sun fecked off :( roll on summer! :D

We had 2" my garden is still White.

We didn't grind to a halt and sleep in our cars though. No fuss at all just cracked on. Different breed up here. winkeye

that's because you have a proper car :) round here, everyone faffed about and took time off work, i was driving to work (very sideways) every day, just for the fun of it :D

I know I'm a way off from this bit yet, but I've been giving some thought to the steering rack again.

3 options here

1- get an E36 rack from the frag yard for £20 and have a fiddle
2- swap the PAS rack from the touring, plug n play
3- keep the manual rack that is already in the Chromie, but what's the deal with the auxilary belt when the PAS pump is removed?

This might be a daft question but why would you not fit the PAS rack from touring over a manual rack? that gets rid of option 3

I can see the E36 PAS rack would be a good upgrade and for £20 it might be worth a play, if it fitted it would be a an improvment over the E30 one and if you dont try it now its a ball ache to lift the engine out for clearance when the cars been on the road just to find it wont fit. atleast now the cars on stands and you can lift the engine to test fit and have room to work round it before you put all the ancilleries back on it and not have to mess about.

so to sum up option 1 then if it dunt fit option 2 as you will have the mannual rack out on the floor so you might as well put the touring one back in. :D

Probs leave the pump in place un connected?

I think you need a Danthe linkage they are mint. I have one here just trying to find a e34 in a frag yard to take uj's off as they are $$$$$ from dealer

Get a rack it will sell for more on here if you don't use it. I will chop weld move bend that S50 till it either fits or is fooked. Then M52 manifold on and it will p1ss on. winkeye

Manual racks are for weirdo/pauper types, stick the PAS rack on. If you really want an E36 rack then just sell the S50 fannimolds, simples!

It has to be an E36 rack Lee, the standard E30 item is desperately slow, the quicker rack transforms the car.

An E36 rack is going to make it a much better car than an S50 manifold. If it won't fit use some M52 manifolds and move the S50 one on :)

I really do want the E36 rack as the E30 steering was shite slow and was the biggest letdown for me with the touring.

For the outlay of a rack it's worth me checking how much hassle it will be with the S50 mani. If I must, I'll move it on though, but I do love it.

How much hassle are E34 steering column UJ's to remove in-situ? Does the rack need to be undone and moved a bit? The local frag yard is littered with them

They are a bit of a tw4t to get off, if you unbolt all the crap that holds the column under the dash you can pull it all backwards which makes it easier
