im sorry im a little confused isnt goin to an m10 a step backwards? wouldnt a worked m40 or m42 be more beneficial? or is this the easiest way to get a larger more powerful 4cyl?

still looks like a sweet car mate and i do like carbies they look and sound great im sure.

M40's are rubbish..

this looks like a really good project! - used to have 2002 with a trick M10 with a Heini Mader head/dellorto 48's/wild 310 or something schrick etc - bet the M10 is soo much lighter than M20 and i luv the way your engine is so far back in bulkhead - hurry up and get it finished so we can hear that little beast run! 8)

***UPDATE***

Ive finaly got round to trying to start this now! Woo hoo!
Its getting oil preasure (had abit of a stress over it!) and fuel but no spark. looks like i'm not getting any power to the coil.
I think i've also wired the fuel pump wrong or im getting the wrong signal.

Was really good to hear the sound of the starter motor spinning the engine up.

Heres a cool pic i took today anyways. We certainly had the weather for it!

another update. had a look and realised id not plugged the impulse generator connector into the dizzy

Now ive just got the problem that the fuel pump shuts off when i get oil pressure but that should be sorted tomorrow with the correct relay wired in.

Could you possibly take pictures of your fuel pump placement? And are you using a pressure regulator? Could you post pictures of that setup as well please?

Thanks,
Hadrian

verry cool!!!!!!!wot sort of power do you expect to make?am thinking of building an e30 to replace my 205gti for rallying and am wondering what engine to use to be competitve in class(had thought of an m50 2.5 but it puts me in a funny class)and thought one of the four pots would be best for weight.its gona be done on a budget,so will be using what i can find-e28 brakes (280mm) keeping the drums on the rear(so the hand brake is good  )316 cwp on an lsd, coilover kit from rally design on the front(dont kno bout the rears)my old 318 shellseats and harnesses out of the pug(and poss the dhla's)that just leaves the choice of engine!!!!!!!

Ill get some pics for you later on today mate. Ive fitted a facet silver top pump on the passenger side of the engine bay next to the suspension strut then fitted a filter king regulator up on the fire wall.
oldie323 wrote: wot sort of power do you expect to make?
I think somewhere in the region of 150bhp with a nice amount of torque.

Ive not sorted out the correct relay and wiring and am hoping to try and fire it again this afternoon!

Mate that was ages ago lol!

I got the 316 tuned and sent it for an MOT today. It failed the MOT but just on one ball joint which is being changed tomorrow and an advisory that the bettery was loose (forgot to put the braket in). So not bad at all really.

I got to drive it home from the garage and I have to say it makes some wicked noises and seems to go really well. Ive just got to put 1k miles on the engine now and take it back for its full tune!

Got the MOT retest booked for saturday

Thanks for everyones support on this! I'm really looking forward to getting to the meets this year and getting down to pod for afew runs!

Well done Si!

Seems we're both going to be legal about the same time. Still on for that race? something we agreed on a long long time ago thinking about it, can't believe how long we both taken, still worth it in the end eh!

I'm still due mot as emissions are just a touch too high, so re-test/fiddle with gas machine on Sat but other than that I'm road legal baby!! I managed a short vid, posted in FI section, have you seen it?

Mark.

IT PASSED!!!!! WOOO HOOOOO!!! and its taxed!!!!!!

Had a really bad morning with it tho. broke down on the way to the mot. The earth strap wasn't connected to the alternator so the battery wasn't charging. This ment that it just ran out of juice on the way to the mot  Got there in the end tho

The car feels awesome! only problem is on the way outa my drive yesterday morning I bent the exhaust  It wasnt hanging quite right. It now sounds pretty shakey and i'll have to sort that out before it goes for its full tune......time for upgrades already lol. Can anyone recomend a good stainless system for an early 318i (m10).

Cheers mate, I'm not sure on that one will have too see. I know theres afew others in the pipe lines on here at the mo.

I just noticed today that my econometer(sp?) is not plugged into anything (at least I don't think it is) but is showing between 12 - 15 mpg.............now I'm not sure but maybe its a coincidence and its actually correct :jester:

Hi Si

Hows the motor running?

Did you upgrade the valve springs when you fitted the 292 cam or did you leave them as standard?
