The M30 is going in a RHD tech 1 sport by the looks of it.

Cool, what base car are you using ?Theo325 wrote:Thought I would dig this up as I am hopefully getting the car next week so can start the transplant.
I've never had a problem with an M30 water pump, wiggle the pully to check for play, if theres a tiny bit thats fine.I want to get a new waterpump for the engine, are the ones from ECP/GSF ok or should I go to BMW? The ones from ECP/GSF are about £30, Im guessing they are alot more from BMW?
Yeah, it's for cooling, leave it on and point the end of it to the old hole in the plastic cover for the M20 air filter box.Oh and another thing I was wondering, why is there a duct on the top of the alternator? Is it for cooling? Is it meant to be connected to anything?

Excellent! I was hoping it was the gti one not the 1.3. Thanks again for the help.
Andy - thanks for the tip on the water pump, will check out the belt - hopefully will be £30 less that I need to spend.
Car it will be going in is a tech 1 sport in dolphin grey, just had new rear arches in (which are still in primer) and seems to be a decent enough shell. By the time the engine/box/headlining/interior etc is sold the car will owe nothing, which is always good.
Hopefully just sorted some H&R -35mm springs and some beefier Hartge anti roll bars. Just want to get a Sparco strut brace like Ed has in that picture and some poly bushes and then thats the suspension side of things sorted.
Still ALOT of things on the shopping list though

Also found that mk11 diesel golf servo is the same size as mk1 gti so it may be easier to source. Thats what I've fitted to mineed325i wrote:The servo is a mk1 gti.

i'd change it if i were you. every bmw engine i've owned has needed a new water pump at some point and as you say, they're cheap enough. GSF ones are febi/bilstein which i assume are OEM or as near as dammit.Theo325 wrote:I want to get a new waterpump for the engine, are the ones from ECP/GSF ok or should I go to BMW? oh, i like the alternator snorkel! how much cooling did bmw think this thing needed? it's nearly the same size as the engine inlet!

I'm having the same problem Theo, first I had a small shopping list and lots of money now its a huge shopping list and no money..Theo325 wrote: Just want to get a Sparco strut brace like Ed has in that picture and some poly bushes and then thats the suspension side of things sorted.

Be interesting to see what people have to say about upgrading various suspension components. Are you replacing all your suspension components? Looks like your projects coming along nicely!

Ive already swapped almost all my front end for new (inverted billy shocks new arms/bushes/mounts. just need new rod ends) and going for some eibach -35 springs when I get back. Then it should handle quite well!!!mybmw6 wrote:I'm having the same problem Theo, first I had a small shopping list and lots of money now its a huge shopping list and no money..Theo325 wrote: Just want to get a Sparco strut brace like Ed has in that picture and some poly bushes and then thats the suspension side of things sorted.

I'm sorry but I don't know alot about this as I've not fitted them!
I was planning on getting the adaptor brackets to fit the calipers to the E30 hubs from www.335i.de but they seem expensive for what they are to me!
Probably not going to fit them anyway as I'm planning on keeping 15" BBS wheels on mine, they have really grown on me!

DRIFTBOY,
You have mention the 740 front calipers...what's the requirments to fit on an E30 ? im doing M30 swap on a 320 boyshell. (working on custom mounts) i checked the 300mm.de convertion . . looks like a list of cocktail parts.
Anyone has undergone a Audi TT brake swap ? if you have, pics please . . . .

I finally picked up the tech 1 325i sport yesterday, stripped the interior today to find that it has some serious rust issues
Theres rust on the bulkhead, floorpans, front battery tray area, both rear inner arches, the rear valance, the n/s sill and both front jacking points are knackered!
So it's looking rather likely that I will have to get a really clean 316/318/320 with ABS to use to for the 3.5 conversion. Will this create any more problems besides having to change the front legs and the whole rear axle setup as this in itself is not a major issue, I want to change all the bushes anyway, springs, rollbars anyway. Any other things I should be aware of?

Thinking about it the chances of finding a clean m40 shitter with abs are pretty slim. Good point!
I'm planning on uprated brakes - either 4 pot calipers or using the m3 5 stud setup. Will the lack of ABS not be a problem? It's going to be a track car so will endure some heavy braking.

abs is only effective in the rain or snow, but you will be on a dry track you'll learn the lines a breaking points no bot hae to worry about it

when i get my ABS working again, i will be fitting a switch to kill it as i generally hate it too. it's not bad to have while out with the kids etc but not when pushing on. the ABS on our old stinky diesel 406 was FAR superior to the older E30 setup and that didn't bother me so much.

So are you saying that you would disable it when driving hard?
BTW - do you know what 5 series ripleys have in at the moment? I spoke to a guy the other day on the phone but he didn't know which one it is. I still need the top rad hose and throttle cable so maybe my luck will be in and its an e34 m30?

i would indeed
it's a personal preference thing but i prefer it to be between me and the car, not a technologically outdated safely feature that increases your stopping distance
maybe a steering wheel mounted ABS re-engaging panic button would be a good idea also
re the E34, i've not been up to ripleys in ages so i'm not sure what's in there at present. the E32 M30 rad top hose and throttle cable will do the job just as well and these are a lot more plentiful in the breakers. the E34's in there keep being M20's.
i did see a E34 518i the other month though, the engine looked so lost in the engine bay!

ANOTHER tedious question here.
What diff would you 3.5 owners recommend for the M30? I've been offered a swap on a 3.25 LSD for a 3.64 which I was going to use, is the 3.25 going to be too long, bearing in mind that it's going to be a track car.

For a track car you are much better off with the 3.64

Shame really, would be a good bit of business getting that 3.25 for a straight swap.

I agree, if you are using the E34 535i gearbox then 3.64 would be much better on track than a 3.25 unless you have Toby Unna type turbo power outputs!

Just skimmed through this thread. I am about 70% through my project. the site used to be www.335itc.co.uk. new to this forum, heard alot about it. I am also stuck on the top water hose, but created a seperate thread.
just some answers to your questions (or hints).
I am using hi-spec motorsport 360mm monster kit. 6 pots. they cost me around £1400. excellent quality, and an overhaul kit is only around £35! You must have 18's, and some chunky spacers (so m3 wings only) to fit these in.
i used the 324td washer jet tank, so i was able to re-locate the motronic water header tank (havnt been using car terms for nearly 6 months so excuse me) there.
Standard manifold clears, but you should probably dish the downpipe a little to add extra clearance, unless you are using all poly mounts, in which case you should get away with it.
hope that helps a little.
