What would be the ultimate cylinder head for an M20 to get as much power as possible?

Bigger Valves?
Gas flowing?
Valve springs?
Port sizes?
Camshaft?
Anything else?

You get the idea- i hope

I'm not all that knowledgeable on this so please educate me :D
The car will be running on MS with ITBs and the bottom and is a 2.7 built with custom pistons if thats any use

An M50 head.

But for what reason do you want this ultimate head?

A super worked 2.7 could manage about 280bhp at 9krpm, is that of use to you?
note that it would cost insane money and have 0 low end torque and the on cam rpm point
will be like a NOS trigger.

Best way would be turbo to be honest or an engine swap

your looking at about 3-4k into the head alone.
And the engine would still only be a M20 12valve.
With great challenges comes great engineering.

a racing dynamics 24v head would be a good start but they only cast 7.

Dave decide what you actually want from the engine first!

I want as much top end power as possible, it wont be revving much higher than 7k. Not too fussed about low down torque- I want a change from the low down grunt and not much top end. Obviously I'm not after a full race engine

Ok perhaps 'ultimate' was the wrong word :?

Never heard about these 24v heads! How much will one of these set you back?

Gunni- can you fit an M50 head to an m20 then?

I'd suggest a Rotrex supercharger, specc'd for 400bhp, you'll be lovin it!

The new units are small, very efficient and require little messing about to get them on, there is some R&D being looked into about these for the M20, so maybe you could benefit from that project in a few weeks.

Check out Rotrex.com for the info and pics.

I'm sure having the power both top and bottom would suit your needs, no?

HTH, Mark.

I'd suggest a Rotrex supercharger, specc'd for 400bhp, fitted by A-Tech, you'll be lovin it!

^ not quite that easy but, yeah something like that M8 :thumb:

re the head Q, gotta agree with Gunni, M50 all the way, good enough for BMW and all that...

I may have a passion for the soul of the M20, but the M50 is a close second, I have 3 of them now

Just found these guys. UK distributors for Rotax Superchargers. Damaging to the wallet. No bolt on kit for the M20. But with some of the things I have seen im quite sure theres members here that could work something out.

if you do a search on this forum you will find that the thought of the rotrex kit is not new...I have a complete fitting diagram for the kit and one is being sold from Germany..

http://www.g-powertech.com/komp.htm

as for 400bhp..none of the kits have been geared for that amount of boost usually a 75bhp gain

No. But as the M50 has the same capacity as the M20 and 30% more valve area, it's a no brainer really. If you want the ultimate, you need 24 valves. For big dollars it doesn't make any sense to stick with old 12v stuff.

a lil off topic.

Is there any difference between the head on a 320i and a 323i?

There both 731 cast, I know the 323i has a different cam (260/260?), But is there any difference in the valve ports/sizes?

Is it??? I thought 320i/323i L-jet engines were 253/253 and it was only the Motronic engines that had 260/260......
Andyboy?????
This is why I no longer drive an E30......
