Hi

Can the standard ECU be remapped on the M42, or does it require a replacement Chip in the ECU first?

If it requires a replacement chip, will the zone chip be suitable for this or will I require something else?

Cheers,

The maps live in the chip. By changing the chip you are re-mapping it.
In order to re-map the car "live" you need an emulator (laptop with a chip plug on a cable) which plugs into the ECU and pretends its a chip. You can then change the parameters as you wish for the optimum results and save that configuration onto a chip, which then gets installed permanently.
Thats the way I understand it.

That makes perfect sense to me... Any idea of how much this might cost, and who does it in the south west?

Also, theres obviously other things that affect a remap, like exhaust and induction mods, but I'm currently confused as to what I want to do.

Apparently there's no point in changing the standard air filter, as there's no aftermarket ones that are any more efficient.

Would changing the exhaust make much power? If so would I need a full system including manifold or just a back box?

Cheers,

you want a 6branch manifold (zone shop) to get a power increase from changing youre exhaust. but theyre expensive.
you could also go for a "bigger bore" throttle body. either or both of these two mods+remap will probably give you a nice bit of extra poke

wont work out cheap though. manifold= about £600 i think, throttle body=£150-200 ish i think, and a custom remap maybe £300+.
alternative to remap is the zone chip which is alot cheaper but im not sure if it will get you the max power possible power.

Remap a 318........Dont waste your money. It wont give you enough of a power increase for the cost.

It's a Sport, with the 16v engine though, I've heard good things from people who have had theirs chipped.
