you can use 135mm rods from say a M50 family engine as they are lighter then the M20 ones.
and then custom pistons.

I don´t think there are any stock piston/rod combo that will work

You´ll need a big camshaft as well so that the engine is allowed to breath up high.
With great challenges comes great engineering.

Nope no stock piston rod combo will work as above.

In the US this crank (M54 3.0) forms part of the IE 3.0 and 3.1 litre M20 stroker kit that retails for silly dosh, so its a good little route to go down if you can do it properly. Custom pistons won't come cheap though.

Frankly if you didn't buy custom rods and pistons and have the whole lot balanced with the crank and a lightened flywheel, plus some head work all at the bare minimum standard of the build I'd have to slap you, if someones actually going down this road in the UK they have to do it right.

I would have loved to have got my hands on this crank befire I started my build.

I reckon you're safe in NZ. Click the link www.gevans.info at the bottom of Gareth's - march109's sig for a stroker table :D

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

You either have to machine the crank or fettle the crank case to avoid contact as the twin vanos cranks have much larger balance weights. Metric mechanic site has loads of useful info

I had the chance to buy a 3.0 crank from an N52 engine (sucessor to the M54) with a cracked timing chain cover for €2 until I realised the main bearing journals are smaller than the M20/50/52/54 engine so wouldn't work. Shame about that!
