I think he wants to know how to bast*#dise an E30 and make it as unreliable as the car the aforementioned engine was rescued from.fuzzy wrote:hellothere hasnt been any messages in my inbox? what do you need to know?

hi mate, custom made alloy sump to fit around the standard unmodified front crossmember. totally different shape with the deep part at the front instead of the rear as per cosworth so the dipstick was also relocated to the front. nothing e30 was altered , standard crossmember, standard power steering rack mated to cosworth ps pump with custom hoses. standard issue roll bar that came fitted on my tech2 touring just now but because ive left everything as standard i can still upgrade easily using off the shelf available rollbars etc.

yes, feel free to ask but i cant supply any detailed pics as my cameras fooked.. standard servo but tbh thats not ideal as theres only 5mm clearance between the inlet and the servo so ill be looking at either remote or brake pedal assembly with reservoirs attached.
t5 gearbox retained the standard e30 hydraulic clutch by welding a bracket to the bellhousing.

yeah but also make it as fast as that aformentioned donorBadDave wrote:I think he wants to know how to bast*#dise an E30 and make it as unreliable as the car the aforementioned engine was rescued from.fuzzy wrote:hellothere hasnt been any messages in my inbox? what do you need to know?
Chassis mounted is where the lower engine mount is attached to the chassis rail rather than the front cross member. More popular in race / rally cars as it does give a very positive location of the engine and therefore more vibration.
Having seen so many rotten e30 chassis rails I'd be checking them thoroughly before bolting any engine to them
I still can't see the benefit of a YB in a e30, there's more power available through oem+FI, I know YB's are, in good condition, very good engines but there's such a good case put forward for keeping the engine bmw. There's a m10 turbo on e30tech just put down 365rwhp @ 1 bar, a m20 in sweden which dynoed @ 1129bhp, a uk m50 turbo @ 451bhp, with that available for equal or less build prices against fitting a YB it seems a mad idea.
Is it a 'love' thing? I 'love' my holset, it's true, so don't be shy, there's some things in life we just do, for our own reasons, I can appreciate that.
Mark.

451 bhp for less than the price of a cosworth conversion? £5500 was my drive in drive away price with everything supplied and at 270bhp level. the ease of future tuning is whats good about the cosworth. from 204bhp to 270 for £200. from 270 upto 330 for another £700(including large cooler) another £500 will see me at 370 bhp with 400lbft .the only other costs would be the bigger turbo, usuall bought at 270-330 level and a grpA or 3 layer steel H/gasket and no internal engine works needed...
i dont reckon ill go above that for an everyday tool carrier.
cosworth wasnt my first engine choice , i wanted a TT skyline engine but no one would quote me for insurance. i didnt have that problem at all with the cosworth that was recommended to me by the engine converter .plus its only a little piddly 2 litre

I think James spent about 2k on engine parts, he made everything else but he is one of the few who can and has the facilities to do it, I have limited skills and did mine for 900 first time, added another 1.5k since. Because mine took so long to do people assume I blew 1000's but I didn't, may I add I'm still on my original N/A clutch, gearbox and bottom end, I've done a few hg's and heads but having 'mates' in the trade gets me cheap parts, which is handy.
I will say it also depends on the advice you get, back then Ant and I were M20 turbo crazy, if we started the boost projects again today he would suggest a rotrex everytime, so I can understand how you went with the flow, I did, not having the tech skills/knowledge to go my own way kinda decided it for me, today tho I'm happy to talk the talk.
I've seen the 200mph cossie, YB powered mofo, enough said

That is the difference, you paid a premium for the 'drive in, drive out' service. Once you 'know' what you doing you just pay for parts, although I would give my right bollock for a heated double garage and a proper ramp
Sometimes being the one outside in the dark, covered in oil, snowing, soaked, rounded off nut, blood oozzing from my gloves, no feeling head down etc etc I wish I never found the zone
I ok when I warm up tho

I've put YB's in escorts before, a MKII for myself a few years ago (an RS2000 so the purists loved that!) and a couple of MKI's for other people. I know the engines and have built them myself to show 325 bhp at the wheels on the rolling road so there isn't any sort of "black art" associated with the cosworth engine unless you're looking for 600+. I'm not a mechanic just practical with the tool box and hands on. I've had E30s for ages and decided to combine the two and Fuzzy is right, basically cheap (ish) horsepower. I see the E30 as a better, more modern and better put together version of the escort, rear wheel drive etc. Plus you can get an E30 to handle better for a lot less money than an escort these days as the price of the "retro" scene has gone through the roof. So I suppose it is a "love" thing, a love of the YB power and the E30 look (all be it mine in an M3 shell). Cheers for the help and comments so far, I'll keep everyone updated on progress and will no doubt be pestering again on questions and advice. Not been in the garage for a while as I've had that bloody sickness bug over christmas. Cheers, Andy

my celica....

that was my favourite as it was just rediculously impractical for a road car and scary fast even with only stage 1 power as it was so light, low and hard that it was an experience
