i'm looking at building a silly power m10 from a 1.8 so far i have throttle body manifolds that i'm looking at runnig on bike carbs and i have three spare heads so one will begeting ported for a bit more grunt. Question i have is what difference would different sized pistons etc make i have a set of m20 ones laying around that i was going to try and put into the m10 but not sure if it would work or not any ideas?

I have heard something in the past about vw beetle pistons...I think.....
Or maybe I dreamt it lol

M10 can be a cracking motor if done right, I was gonna build one with my old lump but my brother weighed it in!!! was gutted as it had a schrick cam in it! :cry:

i wonder if any one on the vdub scene would know about the beetle ones then might be worth finding out at the minute i have pretty much everything sitting here so i thought i'd have a play around with it and see what works

Oh and bike carb wise Lance1a is the guy to talk too he had an m10 running on them.

ive heard that the e30 m3 crank and pistons fit in the m10 engine but dont hold me to that

What the bore size of an M10 and the rod length as i have some beetle pistons here lol can check! Searched this site but can't find anything so maybe i dreamt it lol

It's complicated

If you have an S14 crankshaft you can use 92mm pistons from an M30, but you need to modify the timing cover to fit the S14 oil seal, then deck the block by 0.5mm and mod the chain/tensioner. You can also use a 2L crank with VW aircooled pistons but need to deck/mod again. You can use a 2L crank with 2002 pistons, but unless you have the right head you will either have stupidly low compression or piston Vs valve issues.

The best way I can see to do it is to contact someone who does custom pistons like top end performance in the USA, and tell them what crank/head you have, and they will make pistons to match.

right i've been told that i need the m10 head from a later engine and the botom end from a 2002 what diffrence will the cranks make i've stripped the m10 bottom end i had and have removed the pistons and crank is it an idea to get the crank balanced etc ?
