i can't remember exactly what connected where now to be honest! the abs worked fine with the light on for a few months before it finally died. i assume the bulb being removed by a previous owner meant it had been on for a few years and always operated fine!

E30 ABS is totally self contained, and has no connection with the engine whatsoever, other than it has an input from the blue alternator wire to detect engine running, and takes a feed from the ECU side of the DME relay (red/yellow wire) to detect ignition on.

Does it still get this feed properly using an M30 loom Brian?Brianmoooore wrote:E30 ABS is totally self contained, and has no connection with the engine whatsoever, other than it has an input from the blue alternator wire to detect engine running, and takes a feed from the ECU side of the DME relay (red/yellow wire) to detect ignition on.
As long as i know its not a problem with the conversion i'm sure i can sort it!
I had no trouble with my abs / M30 engine loom at all.SPADGE wrote: Does it still get this feed properly using an M30 loom Brian?

The abs works and the light goes out, didn't change / modify anything to do with it.

I'll look elsewhere for that problem then

The red/yellow is the one on pin 20 of the 318 C101.
Shows as red/white on my M30 wiring diagram. (Same red/white as the one on the main ECU relay).

Brianmoooore wrote:Right - first a list of the E30 plug colours and functions:
1/ blue, from alternator small terminal to ignition light.
2/ green/yellow, oil level sensor (NC on 318 loom)
3/ NC
4/ brown/purple, water temp to cluster
5/ brown/green, oil pressure to cluster
6/ green/white, fused ignition, feed to lambda sensor heater and Rx pin of engine ECU only.
7/ green, ignition 12V+ from ignition switch
8/ white/black, fuel rate from ECU to cluster
9/ black, engine speed (revs) from ECU to cluster
10/ blue, oil level sensor (NC on 318 loom)
11/ white/green, service light reset from diag.socket to cluster
12/ grey, engine ECU fault light. Not normally fitted on UK cars
13/ green/purple, fuel pump, from ECU to pump relay
14/ black/white, speed signal from cluster to ECU
15/ black/green, from unloader relays to starter motor
16/ white/black, unknown function. Usually fitted, but goes to a NC in the body socket
17/ NC
18/ black/yellow, starter, from start position of ignition switch to starter
19/ NC
20/ red/yellow, ABS feed. This is 12V+ to the ABS unit from the main ECU relay
The E30 body socket may have some different colours for the same pins:
2/ blue/black
5/ black/brown
6/ green/yellow
8/ yellow/white
10/ purple/green
11/ white/blue
12/ green/white or brown/black (not usually present on UK cars).
13/ purple/red
14/ blue/yellow
I've got three different wiring diagrams for the engine control of 535i s around '87- '88, but I can't really relate any of these to your mystery pins, 8,12,15,16 and 20.
There was a major change between '88 and 89'. The '88 ECU has 35 pins. The '89 has 65. How many does yours have?
Note that the only wires you have to connect to make the engine run are (on the E30 C101):
7, (ignition), 13, (fuel pump), and 18, (starter)
post revival!!
Have you got access to a wiring diagram or ecu/engine plug pin out for a 1992 E34 M30?

As I've just posted in another thread, the wiring should be the same.
Hi guys , Ihave a 1990 320i convertible , I've found some lights behind the dash and have no idea what they are for , 1, a brown and a green and brown stays on after ignition,2 , two seperate lights both brown with a grey and red, also my service light do not work . in the front of the dash there is a little white plug part no 1 381 635 does anyone know what this is for , any help would be much appreciated.

In reverse order: The white plug is the coding plug for the instrument cluster, and its main purpose is to tell the tacho. whether your car is a 4 cylinder or a 6.
Service lights could be as simple as the SI board needing new batteries, up to the system having been sabotaged to put the red warning lights out.
The two seperate lights with the grey/reds sound like the illumination for the headlamp beam adjuster switch, which is fitted into the panel above the driver's legs.
My first thoughts on the light with the green/brown was an ABS warning light that has been hidden, as an 'aid' to selling the car, but the colours are both wrong! Can't think what this one can be, at the moment!
P.S: It's preferable for you to start a thread of your own, rather than tack it on to an existing thread.

Just click on "new topic" at the top of the page, but, for your query, in the "tech help" forum.
