Hi!

Finally got it all back together after having all the carpet out to ensure there was no rust etc and allow me to run all the new audio wiring etc.

Illuminated footwells and interior door handles:

I've always liked this idea ever since I saw it on my dad's E39 so thought to try it in the E30. This mod is pretty time consuming as it requires getting the wires from the interior into each door, I probably wouldn't have gone through all of the hassle had I not been fitting door tweeters.

Parts used:
1/2W 0.5W Carbon Film Resistor ±5% 10 Ohm - 1M Ohm
3mm red LED

We drilled 2, 3mm holes in the handle, we tried a few different positions but the lower rear side worked best as it doesn't shine when in the seated position. The LEDs have a slight lip so they dont fall through the holes. Depending on how much illumination you want/need, you can use a lower or higher ohm resistor. I used what I had left after repairing the OBC light bar. I soldered the two LEDs together in series and bent the pins around tightly to allow the door pin to still fit and not foul on the LEDs.

After soldering the power cables, I covered the whole thing in hot glue to insulate and protect the system.

We used bullet connectors to allow it to be connected after installing the handle in the car.

The time consuming bit is the wiring inside the door. It must be carefully run to ensure it is not cut by the window regulator. A tip to make it easier to take the cable throught the door grommets, tape the end of the cables together with waterproof masking tape and dip it in petroleum jelly. Makes it easier to get it through the hole :P

The connections are soldered to any interior light circuit, in this example I used the headlight adjustment lights.

Cut away the old cable ties and put new ones in as you run in the new power/tweeter cables.

Once it is all plugged in and you siwtch on your lights, you should have a subtle glow in your door pull.

A note to anyone with a 4 door who may be keen on this, the rear handle lights can sometimes be seen from the front out of the corner of your eye, I haven't noticed it too much but it is worth noting.

Footwell illumination

Similar to the handle illumination, bullet connectors so it can be removed if not liked. It is 5050 LED strip, 50mm, fitted under the kick panel and glovebox.

Cup holder

Having had a Passat company car for the last two years, I really wanted a cup holder. I didn't want to use a non BMW part but ended up using a universal one of eBay as I gave up trying to use the E39 one. I should have listened to my dad when he told me the E39 ones are rubbish :x

Granted, it was a chinese knock off but he said he put a genuine one in his 535i and it broke after a few months.

I remember someone using a Passat one ages ago but felt it would be wrong to use a VW part in a BMW.

We cut out the shape at the back of the console and mounted some 6mm poplar plywood for support on the sides. To hide the shiny sides, we covered it in some black vinyl.

The cup holder opens downward but fouled on the ashtray assembly. We decided to delete the ashtray and add a USB socket in the blanking panel.

It is a piece of 3mm hardboard that has been covered in felt.

Due to the cigarette lighter being permanently live, we used a USB with an on/off switch.

AUX and USB

Being able to plug my phone in to charge as well as play music has been taken care of using a dual connector cut into the space next to the handbrake. I glued in the rubber to stop a phone or MP3 player from sliding around.

LED boot lighting

Removed the light cluster and drilled a hole for the cables.

A strip of VHB on the boot side.

Image20180819_192410 by Muj Shah, on Flickr

Once the strip was stuck to the VHB, the cable is fed through the hole and tapped in to the new cables run from the boot hinge and the original boot light ground pin.

Image20180819_192417 by Muj Shah, on Flickr

A drop of hot glue to seal it all.

Nice and bright. Hate to admit it, but, I actually had to remove the drivers side boot light as I had totally forgotten that I have the boot organiser :o:

Audio time...

Had to fit this as one unit as I didn't have the original cage for it.

Had to fit a block behind the bonnet release to allow clearance from the speaker. This does cause the the glovebox to be pushed to the right slightly to be dropped open fully.

Price of tweeter pods put me off buying them so just got some Focal ones that have an angled mounting plate.

Good choice on the audio, I still have a TD1200 fitted in the chromie. 20 years in storage and the Nakamichi fired up first time. Shame the M20B23 didnt do the same. Surprised I still had something to play on it :o
