Thought it be good to get a thread started up instead of just lurking around and mainly stalking Split_S's restoration thread!

So roughly a year ago I bought my BMW E30 318is with 110k miles from Liverpool, with a MOT and no advisories

Image

Image

Image

It made it home to Newcastle fine, but the clutch seemed to be slipping quite a bit, but I was over the moon, I finally had an E30!

Image

The removal of tat didn't take long, half of this came off in the services and the rest when I got home!

The next day I gave it a wash and started inspecting issues with the car

Image

Image

Image

Evidently I had an oil leak (or several) and some dodgy wires taped up everywhere!

So I started a strip down to inspect things more

Image

Image

Image

Image

Even with these initial issues I found, I was still happy!

Image

Image

Image

And even with a slipping clutch, or what I thought was just a slipping clutch, I used it for a few days as my daily and took it to work

Image

Another pic in the sun...

Image

Then I looked underneath :(

Image

And that passed an MOT!? somehow I don't think its a genuine one any more!

Image

Fitted some fresh Osram headlight bulbs and foglight bulbs

Did a bigger strip down

Image

Image

Image

Image

Cleaned under the arches and this is just the start of the crap coming off the underside!

Image

Started ordering more parts, one was my new rear section of exhaust

Image

Disadvantage of rear seats not folding! It was very difficult making it fit in!

Image

Got a working clock from Germany and changed over the face plate for my english one

Did a little experimenting to see how my old wheels off my 1series would look, initially I was impressed, but they never went on

Image

And another sunny pic ha

Image

Then my birthday came and I spent the morning changing my exhaust

Image

Image

Image

Image

You'd of thought the car had been in the sea or something by all that corrosion

All the above happened in the first month of ownership, more to follow - got a 11 more months to write out

I drove the car down to ripon and met up with some friends, one of them also had an E30 so we took them into the barn for some pics

Image

Image

Then I decided to debadge the rear and then also another sunny pic

Image

Image

Changed my knob

Image

Imported some BBS RF's from germany

Image

A bunch of mates came up for a car show

Image

Got myself a nardi

Image

Test fitted the wheels

Image

Got snapped at a car show dissembling my wheels to be refurbed

Image

Image

Finding more problems

Getting the important things bought

Image

Coilovers and tyres for the RF's

Image

Gearbox came out for new clutch pack to be fitted, rear coilovers fitted and shortshift started to be assembled to fit... then the end of the night ended like this...

Image

Gearbox needed to be send for a rebuild as there was play in the shaft, and a leak from the selector seal, the pressure plate wasn't flat, the thrust bearing was in bits, and the bush the fork pushes on was warn down to the metal!

Image

Got wheels back from being refurbed and rebuilt them

Image

Image

Got tyres put on, but two have leaks :( still need to sort those leaks...

My mate got the gearbox back in after it was rebuilt, with the new clutch

Image

And it drove sweet

Image

Went to a local car show

Image

Went out for a meal, embarrassingly got stuck at the entrance, had to get out and remove the splitter and hold on to it out the window! (When I looked a few months later, looks like a scraped the subframe too given there was some fresh yellow paint on it

Image

Image

Clearance isn't great for the m42 engine!

My mate came over and helped, he sprayed some rear lights for me, mine with cracked had water in etc and I wanted a subtle change to the rear

Image

Image

I also started to put the RF's on and realised I had cocked up with the adapters! I wont go into that though...

Image

Image

Then even though I cocked up, left the rear RF's on and took the car to work the next day on odd wheels

Image

This takes us up to the middle of August, and the fun is just about to start

So the E30 started to get stripped down for some welding it required despite what the MOT said...

Bought a gazebo to help with cover, once we finished the stripping it was sent back as it pretty much fell apart - but it was still good given it decided to rain for a full week!

Image

Image

Image

Whilst it was being stripped, we also fixed my overheating issue, turns out the fan clutch was knackered so a new febi one was fitted!

At the same time my 1er was being split to be sold

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

When the car was away took my daily trip to BMW and picked up some fresh wings! US spec 8)

Image

And then I went to go and take a look at my E30 when it was stripped down for its surgery

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

6weeks later I got the car back and took it to its new home at my mums since she had a double garage

Image

Then I went away to Holland to go to 100% Tuning (car show) with mates and on our way back home stopped off at BMW to collect my next batch of parts

Image

Image

Mainly bumper plastics, AC spec front valance and new sunroof!

Image

Finally got an RF on the front

The e30 in its new home

Image

Stripped down the inlet to check coolant pipes, delete the throttle body heater, and install mustang injectors

Image

Image

Image

Image

All rebuilt back up, but the valve cover hose is too big so a smaller one was ordered

A night shot after a long night working

Image

Some fresh parts bought from BMW in germany as the accelerator pedal wasn't available to buy in the UK!

Image

The new daily, massive change compared to the 1er, and not in a good way - major cheaper running costs, but everything else is crap.

Image

Started rebuilding my crack free dash I got, moving over the wiring loom, fitting an OEM radio I picked up in Bradford

Image

I decided I wanted a quick release for my nardi, so I imported an NRG boss and quick release from the US

Image

And then also decided I wanted aircups to fit to my coilovers to give me better clearance at the front over speedbumps etc

Image

The E30 then made a trip to my brothers unit for my dad to do some welding for me, when I started dissembling the car more I found a few areas where rust had been missed!

Image

Image

Then when the car was away I ended up buying many many parts and using the garage space to start building parts of the car

Image

Image

Image

I went over to go and see my E30 and finally got round to fitting my cop conversion plate and got my dad to chop off the old brackets

Image

Can also see the E36 battery relocation to the boot too, I forget how much I've changed!

This takes us up to the end of February this year more to follow...

The E30 then went back to my mums to start the underside complete strip down to paint the whole underside and fit new/power coated components

First to be removed was the front hubs/struts so they could be powder coated

Image

Image

Had to use any space I could find, as space started to become very limited!

Image

I then went to New York for just under a week for my girlfriends 21st Birthday, and the day before her birthday I proposed and she said yes! But anyway, the important part of the trip, I got a Red46 Sump armour delivered to my hotel!

Image

And got it home safe and sound, and undetected in my suitcase!!

Image

I then started building up my front hubs with all brand new parts, either Febi or genuine BMW with EBC brake discs

Image

Fitted the air cups to the coilover struts

Image

Started to paint the underside

Image

I wasn't happy with the condition of the driveshafts and I wasn't paying BMW prices for a pair, so I imported some from the US

Image

When frustrated that the rear axle was corroded to the body and i couldn't get it removed that night, I start poking at an area of my rear seats, it didn't sound solid... then this happened

Image

I brought all my panels to my mums and slapped them on the car to make me feel better about the rust I had just found

Image

Then there was more rust

Image

Image

Finally we got the rear axle off and then I started by cleaining up the diff a bit and removing the old bush

Image

Image

And this passed an MOT, how?

Image

Front subframe and rear axle we starting to come together pretty well

Image

Got the tank out and the car was looking pretty bare, and got another arch painted up

Image

My dad came over with a welder and made a start on sorting my petrol tank brackets, what is really annoying is that these two brackets which both went you cant buy new from BMW, but the other two brackets that dont end up rusting you can buy new?

Image

Image

I also got many many wheels and half of my car delivered all freshly been powder coated!

Image

My dad finished welding the top half of the brackets in

Image

Then we found a jacking point that was just full of filler instead of being repaired properly!

Image

Found more rust for my dad to sort out

Image

Gave half the underside its first coating of underseal

Image

Finally got the front subframe off

Image

Decided to tackle the hybrid steering linkage that i'd need for the E46 quick rack I have and the DanThe shaft, after an hour or two I had it built up

Image

I then turned my attention to the engine, I finally gave it an oil change, it had been sitting waiting for one for ages, but turns out I ended up just wasting 4.5L of oil, as turns out I have an oil leak, the car must of been running low on oil too as I decanted the oil that came out into a 4L container and it didnt even come up to the 4L mark!!

Image

Image

So new gaskets were ordered from BMW and I set about taking off the sump, unfortunately I couldn't get the upper sump off due to a 8mm bolt that was in too tight, and is still stopping me removing the sump now! so i think I need something welded on to get it out, I tried extractor sockets but its too small to grab on to it

Image

I eventually started getting rid of some of my junk

Image

Image

Beautiful weather...

Got my dad to weld new studs in my manifold as they were all ruined and I had to remove the front section of my exhaust with the manifold as they wouldn't undo/cracked welded/destroyed nuts

Image

Started on with my new tank, my original (second tank, replaced in 2001) was too rusty for my liking so I've got another, and its getting several coatings of underseal/stonechip the lot to make sure it stands the test of time!

Image

I decided to clean up the connecting pipe for the two halfs of the tank

Image

1 bolt holding the whole upper sump on, not happy

Image

One thing I haven't pictured is that when I had the oil drained, I fitted my VDO senders for my oil temp and pressure gauges I got ages ago, and then wired them all in, at least theres been some positive progress with the engine!

Now it brings us to today...

I started the day by starting to tidy up the garage as I haven't thrown anything away, its all just been sat in piles around the garage

Image

(I don't have a problem, honest)

Diff got all rebuilt today and fresh oil added, I seem to of miss placed my pulse generator cover though, probably in one of my many piles!

Image

Image

And got it mounted to the rear axle, and attached to the driveshafts

My pile of new parts nearly finished to be re-attached to the E30 once the underside has finished being painted and welding has finally finished

Image

Image

Image

A much tidier garage than what it use to be

Image

And heres a rough photoshop of how I'm expecting it to turn out (theres a lot more going on than what I've changed though and few hidden gems stored away to be fitted!)

Now that I've backdated a full year of ownership, I'll keep it up to date, I'm hoping to have it driving by June then it just requires its body respray, then I can finally enjoy driving the E30!

Great read, I've got an IS too.... Forgotten what it drives like it's been laid up so long....

Really indepth work too, most things are scrap underneath the car from my experience also!

You have most of the rust issues I have dealt with and to deal with.....been under the fusebox in the engine bay? It's fun around there!!
Behind headlights ... Snap
Under rear seat ..... Snap
Rear arches.... I'm delaying that! .....

Gotta love old metal... Enjoyed the read....

Nice write up i had the same scenario as you, started out as a change or rear subframe ended up in a roof skin swap, also found the same rusty tank brackets as you.

Thank you for all your kind comments, its time for an update 8)

Well firstly I went and bought a new daily, that keeps breaking weekly

Image
Image
Image

This took a little time away from the E30 to tweak it to my liking, but anyway...

And now back to the E30 winkeye

So after I did my oil service I found out that I had an oil leak coming from my upper sump, so dropped the oil again, and dropped the sump and cleaned it all up and back together with new gaskets

Image
Image
Image
Image

stonechipped my new wings and front valance

Image

Found more rust :(

Image
Image

Finished undersealing the car

Image

On my E46 purple tag quick rack there was play in one of the track rod inners, guess which one

Image

Rack stripped down

Image

Rebuilt with new track rod inners, outers and sump guard

Image

Attached the front subframe all by myself, god that was difficult!

Image
Image
Image

Lovely freshly painted half propshaft and new centre bearing, dust cover and circlip assembled

Image

Got the rear axle on, had help for this axle though, given it was completely built up including diff

Image

Saw a wheel I haven't seen in a long time!

Image

Went to Santa Pod in the Mini when I should of been in the E30 :(

Image

Then as of last night!

Image

Image

Rolled the car out of the garage, it doesnt drive as theres no petrol tank or the other half of the propshaft so its not going anywhere fast soon ha.

Even with attaching the steering rack to the furthest holes it still catches the manifold so i'll need to offer it some persuasion!

The end is in site to get it driving again, then a couple other things to tweak then it needs paint and interior fitted!!!

Now that its back on 4 wheels, I've been able to wheel it in and out the garage which has been fun! ha and I've done some little fun jobs

I finally got my quick release fitted, when I initially fitted it, when tightened down the horn was constantly on which wasn't good! All it needed was a washer and now its on with my Nardi

Image

Bearing in mind the sump guard isn't actually attached to the front of the car yet, but yeah - not a lot of clearance

Image

Image

Image

A little bit of context, my car is being stored at my mums as she has a double garage and I only have a small single garage. We've already had the police around, and a letter from the council regarding noise and vehicle maintenance, she just got this letter today and its hilarious!!!

Image

And a couple pics of today in the sun, got the aircups wired up and working and also got areas that were welded inside all seam sealed up and a lick of paint to protect it all, now plans for tomorrow are petrol tank and fit dashboard!!

I had the same kind of letter when I lived at my brothers. Council came round several times to inspect, realised it was just some nobby neighbours and left us alone.

My mum is going to invite the council over for a visit so that'll be fun haha!

Image

Image

So the frontend is virtually built up now, I need to get the car MOT'd so I can move it around before it goes for paint, probably in September

Image

Image

I've finally test fitted an RF with a front arch to see what fitment is like, unfortunately with the adapters the wheel is still sat on the strut! so I'm going to rebuild them with smaller barrels, bigger lips (radinox winkeye ) and redrilled to 4x100!

Image

And thats the clearance with an RF fitted hahaha, luckily it will be a little more when I eventually get the front bolted onto the car! (not much though)

And I've also got my original tank painted up, the replacement tank didnt fit! :( another layer to protect areas I sanded back to bare metal then its getting fitted, then prop shaft in then it'll drive!

So the tank got painted and then rebuilt with all new fuel lines, and the connecting pipe was cleaned up and new heatshield brackets.

Image
Image
Image

Got the tank fitted and the car fired up after the fuel got through the brand new fuel lines! :D It also only had the front half of the exhaust fitted, so got a letter from the council from a noise complaint! So thats letter 4!

Video

Then my attention went to the propshaft, I fitted it up without realising it was balanced so I believe thats causing a vibration through the car :( so that'll need to come off at some point to go and get balanced, it was sand blasted and painted so it wont have any markings on it

Image

Heres some comparisons that I have of before and afters

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

My mate came over and lent a hand, built me a simple boot build to hold my tank and compressor for my air cups whilst I put in brake fluid, now have working brakes!

Video

Image

And then my attention was returned to the interior, it now has a dash! just needs passenger seat and rear seats :D

Image
Image

Because of the noise complaint I finally fitted the exhaust, firstly cleaned up the 25 year old heatshield and got rid of majority of the dirt.

Image
Image

Then this weekend just gone I got my sump guard attached at the front of the car, 80% secured the fuel lines (found a little more rust, one of the studs holding the fuel lines on) so thats being sorted on Friday coming. I also ran the car for a bit and my radiator seems to be leaking quite a bit too, so need to sort that out :(

Image
Image

Finally secured my front valance and wings then took it for a drive around the estate and realised I cant turn my wheels due to the bulgy sidewalls and how low it is! So because the BBS RF's need to be redrilled to 4x100 as I hate adapters, and the adapters i bought I'd stripped the threads  I've gone and bought some freshly refurbed BBS RM's to allow me to actually turn the wheels, standard 6.5" and I've gone for a set of Yokohama Parada Spec 2 in 195/50/15 so nice and beefy to allow me to have some fun when not on the showy stretched tyre RF's

Next backdated update, and its a long one!

So before the RM's came had to get my dad to do some more welding work on a rusty fuel line holder!

Image
Image

Then the RM's turned up 8)

Image
Image
Image
Image

Then got them on once it stopped raining
Image
Image

And the underneath clearance to the sump guard wasn't great, I soon realised how bad it was...
Image

We tow poled the E30 back to mine from my mums due to all the complaints we were getting from the council, to help with protection of being outside it went under a cover

Image
Image

Next day I assessed the damage and got it up to finish up the last few things, dropping the exhaust to manifold to weld a new stud in the manifold, fit rear ARB and get the propshaft balanced from my foolishly splitting it without marking it

Image
Image

My seat was broke, wouldnt fold forward and the brackets holding the back on both had snapped! So more welding for my dad and I also eventually fitted my fire extinguisher, was a steal winkeye

Image

I had fitted my VDO gauges into the facia, but they weren't fitted properly, so I cut up the bracket I got with them to allow me to secure them all in place

Image
Image
Image

Got my seat back together, propshaft back in, exhaust back on and it was ready to drive
Image
Image

But it was just too damn low with the sump guard on, so the sump guard came off!

This is from 16miles
Image

So much more clearance now!

And now the E30 now has a full tank of shell in her, which made the rear sit even lower ha

The solid engine mounts I had fitted were horrible, caused the whole car to vibrate so bad, so 1 is out, second is available at BMW today so I'll be collecting and fitting tonight

Got my sideskirts fitted over the bank holiday weekend

And got up to other antics with my mates Porsche 944 that lasted 4days in his ownership before catching fire, we made it run healthy at the weekend which was nice

And now got my RF's split down ready to get them redrilled to 4x100 and rebuilt to fit perfectly

And then to top off the bank holiday weekend, my alternator decided to stop working so thats on order too :( but yeah getting there! Should be getting painted in Sept-Oct ready for last car show of the season, then under cover somewhere for some heart surgery over the winter

I think your a bit mad to leave the sump guard off with it this low. I would rather hit my sump guard on everything rather than hit my sump on something once. I cracked my sump twice before I got my sump guard, wouldn't go anywhere without it now.

really good thread, great to some one doing it properly instead of the usual "i'll just chuck an M5x in & be done with it,

as said above best to hit the sump guard a few times, better than replacing the sump :D

also, where did you get the fascia for the gauges?? home made or shop bought??

I can press a button and the front end raises 50mm to avoid any obstacles in the road :)

Anyway... I've got a bad issue:

HELP!!!! Electrical issue!!!

Context, so the voltage wasn't showing 12volts when in ignition or 14volts when running, struggling to start so thought battery was low. Even when jump starting or a battery connected in series didnt allow the volt gauge to read correctly either. Volt gauge is attached to the radio wiring.

Thought alternator was the issue as when revving it did nothing to the voltage reading either. So because of this I've replaced the alternator for a brand new one! Fitted it today and its made zero difference.

Then off and on it would randomly start, and all the time the engine was showing 12v/14v as expected, but the volt gauge in the car showing differently

Now When turning the key in the ignition it doesnt even turn on the ignition and the light that someone had soldered in to blinker when ignition isnt on isn't blinking any more.

Car locks with remote central locking still, all lights are on, everything still works except engaging ignition, a correct voltage reading from radio source, and car wont start

Also the battery light is on but very faint when the car did start

Also the comment on the sump guard, it was hitting every other second and the feeling it gave through the whole car was horrible, I'm going to see if I can get the sump guard altered so it doesnt sit as low then re-attach it
