Bought a combination of E30 318iS and E36 328i last November to start a bit of a project to see me through the winter, here I am nearly a year later still in the middle of things!

Drove the E36 for a week to get an idea of the engine, after that it didn't take long to get the engine out:

Image

The project was in a mate's garage so I didn't always have access, which at times was a good thing but all in all it took nearly 3 months until I got the engine in there and all bolted up:

Image

A few weeks of tinkering with the odd niggle and got to the point of being happy with the engine bay (or so I thought!):
Image

Had some running issues where it wouldn't idle when warm, changed the lambda sensors which solved a slight misfire but not the idling issue until I plugged it in:

Image

It was nice having fun with it as a weekend car, but it was still full fat so I decided to start stripping it down, still running the front 2 leather seats until I find the right bucket seats. All the boot is stripped and the cabin has had the carpet, rear seats and doorcards removed. Next step is to remove the black headlining and remove the sunroof in preparation for a Safety Devices roll cage:

Image

Amazingly on stripping the interior I haven't found any rust! The only rust I have come across is on the n/s/f door and wing.

The badge probably won't be to everyone's taste, also sprayed the front and rear spoilers black, have seen it done on other cars and think it really suits the E30:

The engine is the M52B28 with EWS delete, M50 manifold, E30 M3 exhaust. The gearbox is from the 318iS. Suspension is Bilstein B8 shocks with H&R springs and I fitted an E46 steering rack.

On the to do list is get my LSD rebuilt by Gareth, clean the cabin a bit more by removing soundproofing etc, fit the roll cage and source bucket seats, all in preparation for my first track day which I hope will be in January or February :drive:

Very nice indeed! Can the 1.8 gearbox handle the torque of a 2.8 though?

Thanks guys, a lot of effort has gone into this. I don't really have any mechanical knowledge but wasn't afraid to pick up a spanner and give it a go - there's plenty of information on this forum that pretty much leaves no stone unturned.
It was 'drivable' in March and fully functioning by May so I could drive it to my wedding which was the main aim.

Mick the fan is a pusher using the E36 aircon fan. Temps are perfect, got it wired in with one of Dan's looms and also have a manual override switch for heavy traffic.

Sweety I assume it can, I've read through a lot of conversions that are using it. I got a spare gearbox last week should the worst happen though :)

have you checked which way the air is flowing when the fan is switched on ?
it should blow through the rad and into the engine bay.

loving the hand rolling baccy pouch in shot .

That's cool Mick I know you've done a couple of the conversions yourself so you know what's what.

Kedge that was about 7 years ago mate I'm lucky I can remember what I did last week! In fairness Adam did a lot of the work on that so I didn't pick up too much along the way.

Hopefully sell the leathers soon to help fund the bucket seats, would love to make Keevil on the 1st December but it's doubtful due to a lack of £££

Looking good jimbob. With the m50 manifold it should be pretty good power to weight wise.

If you want to check it over on my rollers before the trackday, just let me know. Circa £30.

I'm thinking of doing Abingdon on nov16th or possibly dec 7th. I haven't written keevil off but it clashes with when I play football.

Thanks Jon, will definitely take you up on the offer of the rolling road - been meaning to get it done for a while now.

Don't think a track day is realistic this year unless I can sell all my E30 spares pretty quickly, as I still need my LSD rebuilt.

Sold the seats which funded a roll cage, just finished taking the sunroof frame out in preparation for the cage:

And stripped down my LSD, decided to upgrade to 3 clutches - was tempted to push it to 4 but think that might've been too much. The original intention of the strip was to change the ratio but decided to replace all bearings etc whilst I was there. A mate of mine will be changing the bearings and also checking backlash etc
Image

It took some researching but there's a fair bit of info over on the yank forums about rebuilding diffs.
