iiz brought a mtecks sports :D

And its a Turd

Purchased from zoner 'lukec88', its not my usual kinda thing in terms of look and its got LOTS of issues

But... Its a Sport init...

Engine is running as rough as anything and kicking out some black smoke, the suspension doesnt work 8O The front springs are 100% compressed down  and the rear is lower.

It has lots of scabs and rusty parts, but nothing too major apart from 'scuttle bubble'.

Apart from that, I do like it :D Plan is to raise the suspension with some Eibach's, sort the engine out but the bottom end does sound like its fuuuucked so another engine will be going in.
Thinking of putting some nice 'balloon' tyres on it too, slightly bigger on the rear.
Front grill is already back to chrome, as are the smoked indicators on the front and sides.
Rav's smoked lights will be replaced with originals and headlight wipers refitted as they have been removed.

Thinking of getting it back on the road for a couple of months just to see if I find anymore issues before the harsh january snows comes.

In the mean time, i'll also be slowly tidying up inside the arches and making everything look nice and clean as I go

Got back with it last night, was way to late t get it off the trailer so Kedge was up first thing with a poking stick to help find rust and to have a nosey.

Image

Was fun getting it on the trailer too, wouldnt start and no tow eye so have to get it on using the starter... But it was slightly low  not sure how as I was in the car but my dad and luke got the trailer to the right angle and we got it on.

Front
Image

Switched some bits
Image

Image

Didnt have any L&B's so Kedge's phone would have to do

Image

Next to a standard height chromie

Image

Kedge taking it for some diffing... Couldnt get it off the drive though as the sump is slightly low  So he managed to diff it on the gravel

Image

I havent had a go in it yet but will do tomorrow

Haha Jim you're now a c*nt like the other Sport owners :D

Can you not just rebuild the engine and keep the numbers matching? Get that susp. sorted and enjoy 8)

I do feel a bit more cuuntish now I own one. Im not a fan of Tech 2's, or facelifts for that matter, I like Chromies and thats about it. But this isnt too bad and Ive still not done much with the chromie...

Engine, I'm not sure, to be honest, I'm not sure if im knowledgable enough to rebuild the engine, but I could take the bottom end of another one and staple them together easy enough. I'm also thinking costs, I dont want to spend a fortune rebuilding an engine and would rather just stick another lump in.

Sports have no 'appeal' for me in the sense of preserving the original engine as its a sport.

I'd carry out a compression test before condemning the bottom end. How many miles has it (allegedly) done?

146,000 from memory or there abouts. The sump has been replaced quite a few times from being cracked, Luke might be able to confirm for me if he spots in.
But since the last time he said the bottom end has been knocking. It didnt sound smart once Me & Kedge got it running earlier on.
I'll have to pick up a compression kit to test it unless my old man has one, but might just buy one anyway

You may be able to get away with just dropping the sump and slipping in some new shells, if the bottom end turns out to be worn. It would be good to keep the original engine if possible.

Welcome to the SSCC! :)

This is the one with a ghetto slam and undersized tyres that a few of us told Luke to put some normal springs on it and some 205/55's to cure the rubbing issues and habit of killing sumps*

*Maybe why the bottom end is knocking?

Indeed Barry

Tyres are still undersized and the springs are still very low. The camber is also pretty angled so new bushes will be also put onto the rear when I get round to doing that part, although the tyres will be a larger profile than standard I think on the rear.

Only thing that's surprising about this sorry turd is it didn't come from Birmingham!!

I only drove it a hundred yards or so, never experienced handling like it. Even just maneuvering you could feel everything bottom out, no idea how it was driven/diffed anywhere!

A compression test will let you know the state of the bores and valves - all six should read roughly equal, at 160-180 psi or so. To test for bore wear, squirt some oil down the bore - if the compression briefly increases, either the piston rings are worn or stuck, or there is bore wear.

The best way of verifying bottom end rumble or knock is to run the engine and use a length of dowel or broom handle, used as a stethoscope held to your ear and prod about various parts of the crankcase to pinpoint where it might be coming from.

If you're sure it's knocking (and not just the ignition timing being miles out), whip the sump off and undo the bearing caps to inspect the shells. I gather that it's possible to replace the bearings with the engine in situ.

 Cheers dude, always nice to have someone around when doing bits. By the off chance, if this is what needs replacing, are they expensive? The car itself has had a fair old bit done recently by Luke including service (cambelt and water pump) Head gasket been done too so hopefully the engine is saveable without it costing too much

@Speedtouch - Thanks fella, i'll give the stick a try tomorrow if I get the chance and report back with what I find and in general with regards to the engine side of things
