Purchased this about three years ago, in that time it has visited Pacerpete for a rummage and to sort out its rusty underside and other issues.

It was always obvious that a full respray would be required as there were a number of bits that needed attention before matters became too serious. RUST

So over to SPR in East Sussex for the bare metal treatment.

Image

The scuttle had a large rust blister in the corner so it was decided a new panel was required.

Image

Glad that the old one came out as this revealed rust below - fixed.

Image

Rear boot panel also needed replacing.

Image

Image

Then the shocker, the rear quarter had a previous repair, which was not properly rust protected. Such a large bodge.

Image

Image

The drivers door was found to be a replacement as it is black behind the door card, so the car must at some stage had a whack to the driver's side. So it was decided a new rear quarter was to be fitted. These are not as expensive from BMW as I expected.

That is all the progress so far, will update as the work continues.

Put it this way - more than I paid for the car (prices were not as stupid three years ago). But I don't think I will have to worry about bodywork rust issues for a while.

My cars the Henna red one in the background, having a couple of little bit's done under neither before it heads off to it's new owner.

They also should have my C-class arriving today where I managed to nearly write it off the other night, I won't take my cars anywhere else.

They had some nice stuff there last week inc the old CSL, another E30 Evo 2 and the car on it's side is a 911 2.7rs

So, time for a long awaited update. Lots of progress has been made, but first some more rust to ponder..

Rear quarter removed due to an earlier repair which was never undersealed and therefore rust could return.

Inner arches ,pretty bad.

New rear quarter:

More rusty bits, never ceases to amaze me how much these cars can hide the brown bits.

A bit of work to blend in the new scuttle..

Next onto the spray booth.

Nice pics, good work!

Out of interest, the scuttle looks to have been stamped properly, and in the proper place, have BMW now sorted this problem out?

Thanks, I had no idea there was a problem with scuttles in the first place. Do you mean stamped the correct shape or the Vin?

They were stamping them in the bottom of the scuttle, and the stamping was rubbish too, never straight etc.

I think I had 3 different ones, but they were all coming in the same, and I know I wasn't the only one having problems.

Yours certainly looks ok, but not quite clear, you happy with it? Look original?

I don't think the scuttle has the Vin stamped

Edit: Yes it is, let me get you a photo Simon...

On second thoughts I don't think it is a good idea to post a picture.

It is low on the scuttle, hence why I didn't notice it and a little wonky as Simon described, but I'm happy with it.

Great thread! Can't wait to see more. What litre s14 is in it, and are you keeping it to original spec?

It is an early 200bhp, trying to get back to original but perhaps take a look at the carbon airbox in the future and engine love, (it has covered 250K km). Can't decide between 16"bbs that I need to refurb and the 17" Alpinas it came with..

Simon

When I had mine done a couple of years ago it wasn't too bad. But the more recent ones are even better

Pony, 16" BBS's are best for now.
