Thought it would be cool to do a thread about my life with E30's - what got me into them, what ive had, what i have now etc. Ok here goes.

Imagine the scene, 1995 and my Dads going to buy a new car. He always went for brand new small cars, polos, micras etc. Me being a car obsessed 12 year old was harping on about getting some decent metal. We were in Abercromby in Stirling one sunny June afternoon and we see up on ramps right at the front of the forecourt a Zinnobar Red 1988 (F) 318i marked up at £4995. We were both smitted and Dad just had to have it. I was exstatic, bye-bye Micra, hello E30!!! I felt like the absolute boy getting dropped off / picked up from school in this. Its STILL to this day my favourite E30 - M40 1800, no power steering, manual windows and sunroof, factory uprated suspension, cross-spokes, tec1 spoiler - looked the danglies. Dad kept it until 2000 when he retired and bought a brand new compact sport. He regretted not keeping the E30 for me and we saw it going about (modified a wee bit) for a few years. It was last seen circa 2005 in Larbert where i left a note under the windscreen wanting to buy it, but i never heard back, its probably dead now :-( Pictures below:

Roll the clock on 2 years, 2002 i buy my first E30, a 1990 H 316i Lux manual in Brilliant Red:

For whatever reason i sold the car after about a year and pined for another for a year or so. 2005, when i joined the zone, i bought this a few of you will recall it, a 1991 H 316iA, utterly pristine with 30,000 n the clock. I never gelled with the car, the no fogs, white, wheeltrims and black plastic seeming a tad understated to me, and sold it to a guy in Ireland. Pictures below:

Roll the clock on to 2006 and i buy an absolute dog of war but super reliable chariot, a 1989 G 325iA Touring in Zinnobar Red - a strange mish mash of a car with bits of MTEC2 kit on it, no history and 155,000 on the clock but it was a stromer!!! Dodgiest sale i ever partook in, bought from a well shady and known to be shady dealer in Falkirk for £500 beans, i handed over £500 notes got an mot, no receipt, no history and 1 key, and the guy put the 500 straight in his wallet - dodgy central but i wasny moaning! Pictures below, sold in 2007:

Roll the clock on 4 years to 2011 and i get myself engaged, sell my classic that had far too much cash tied up in it, pump that into the wedding fund and skim a wee bit off the top and decide to buy one E30 to keep and always have something in the garage to play with as im sure im going to need a little escape now and agan!! This car will always be my absolute keeper as its the best classic ive ever had!!My 1983 320iA in Sapphire Blue, and what a car to finish on!

Im sure youll get it on the road soon mate and it will be worth the wait!! My daily is a manual but i just prefer autos i just find manauls so un-necessary, i like the silky smooth changes an auto makes and in E30 terms mate perfectly to the silky sixes, but yes im an auto man myself, i just prefer them anyday over a wiggly stick, so when looking fot my keeper anything that has a wiggly stick was automatically discounted lol

My first E30. Poverty spec - no PAS, no CL, no EW, no front fogs, Early Black comfort Cloth trim. Glass pop-out "Webasto" sunroof. Tech 1 Wheel.
Loved this car - handled lovely - had been slightly lowered by the previous owner who also put on the 16v Golf BBS
I fitted an Ansa exhaust from ECP which looked classy and sounded great and drove it for 2 Years.
Never let me down.
Only sold it because I wanted a 325i

'89 325i - the best E30 I've ever had
Was just 10 Years old when I bought it for £4500 - still the second most I've ever spent on a car.
Bought from its 2nd owner. Originally supplied by Sytner Nottingham it was basic spec with just PAS and electric windows as extras. BBS fitted by previous owner. I did about 30k in this car over 2 Years . Never let me down and had it main dealer serviced twice one of which was an inspection II.

Still miss this car now - best engine, colour, body combination IMO.

Sold it to get out of debt ( which didn't work ) and went from the best car I've ever had to the worst - M2 Golf GTi

'88 320iSE - Optionmeister
Bought as a stopgap replace the very dull K plate Cavalier 2.0CDi I somehow ended up with. Great little car with factory Sport cloth trim, rear headrests, OBC, Headlamp wipers, M tech suspension, Dechrome, Electric roof, Tech 2 rear bumper ( Factory ordered but no other tech 2 bits  )
Completely rust free.
Had to put a rear wheel cylinder and engine bay rubber fuel pipe on it in 12 months. Only sold it as I got a job with a company car.

Never drove an E30 auto properly. Everyone to there own :). Having said that I've been looking at Punto Sporting Speedgears :o: lol

I can remember being 22 well and know the feeling well also about tterly itching to get out behind the wheel - got my fingers crossed it will be soon mate perfectly in time for the summer! :-) Absolutely each to their own as you say :-) Thats why they make auto / manuals i guess for different tastes. If you want to experience an auto at its best....dont drive the punto but try a real autobox like in an E30 lol :-) KNow a few people at Uni with Puntos mind and they seem to like them.

Yeah thanks mate and you've hit the nail on the head! I have to get it back on the road by VOSA aswell. Then gotta buy tax and shortly after MOT. Its been an expenisive start of the year but will be worth it :D. I only want the Punto because after all this money spent on the E30 I'll be heart broken if something happened and plus with the price of petrol lol!

i've had a few so why not elaborate a little!

Image
:o my first one 318i no options, just rear head rests and a fake tec 2. i added fogs IS lip i bought new and an half leather sport interior for £150...........................which i realised was an evo 2 interior of quite some value now it would seem! Hit a tree in this on crimbo day 2001. no pics but it was a good smash like. Wet road/no talent incident

Image

318iS bit of a stop gap tbh until i hit 21 and could insure a 325i. Only had this 11 months had the head off usual iS dramas that we never fully cured so sold it. Pacerpete ended up fixing it for once and forall and it ended up with a zoner called Tomstickland who put a sh!t load of miles on it. I sold it with about 130,000 ish on the clocks he wound it upto 230,000 i think with a few ring trips thrown in for good measure

Image
325i sport an early tech 2 being an 89 march registered car from Henry brothers Glasgow. I bought this cream pie with 66,000 on the clocks. She was basic with just black leather being ticked. I loved this car dearly and and sold it 18 months on to buy a certain c2 2.7 2 door. Alot of good memories from this first trip to the ring and a drift day. IT was sold to a guy near guildford in 2006 but i've never seen it since :( Of them all i'd like this one back nostalgia and all that. I was a hero in this wagon!

Image
Then i bought this at the same time i had the sport. £300 no tax or rent but this was the option miester. bought on a whim much to my mum and dads joy......................... sadly written off by that rear end shunt you can see.

It did have fitted from factory.
heated sports cloth.
switch auto
LSD m-tech suspension
BBS 15's
rear blind
heated jets door lock/wing mirror
Air conditioning
cruise control
13 OBC she had it all!

The cruise control is still with me in my alpina touring! carpet in in Powelly's cars the disc rear beam went into Ian haynes magic sport with the evo 3.2 M3 donk. The dash went into Dips Green V8 touring! It still lives on in many cars!

Image
Then i bought this f**king thing in early 2006 which we all know i still have now! Thats Mr WLN stood there chatting to oldskooler Demlotcrew. The C2 2.7 door turd but we all know about this.

Image
Then stepped up Mr. F51 PYF. A real love/hate car bought to be the new daily after the 4 door write off. I got this off Ant cheap with a long a tax and MOT on it. it was broken for spares as once i was done, don't know why as it wasn't rotton but had done over 242,000 maybe i should of kept it running?

Image
Then came this 325i auto bought off Trevor B& for £200 to donate it engine to PYF after a sump speed hump and lack of oil pressure incident. This car had a lovey donk and the biggest history file ive seen. It had about 240,000 miles on it and was BMW FSH no lie. Shame she went to the scrappy no really rotton. The jacking point was welded into my 2 door!

Image
Ah my beloved "Kitty" c2 2.7 touring bought by pure chance thanks to the zone. It was linked up in E30 chat from auto trader. Dissed as a badged up old shed. It was up as a un wanted part ex about 10mins from home buy some chump who had no clue of what it was. i'd been there 30 seconds when i popped the bonnet and clocked the alpina front top mounts and knew we were in business. This one is still here and a special one to me now. Been to the ring 2 or 3 times now, round the ilse of mann, swiss alps drove it to my wedding too. Love it don't want to sell this, my fav E30 out of them all.

Image
bought this rotton old alpina with Barry to bust for parts, but i bought him out of it...............
If i had another 4 door i'd have a rep of this. She looked f**king good as a 4 door

Image
bought this 320i off Gazman. And basically put the engine from the alpina into this and then sold it to buy and bloody alpina vent guage for my 2door! i liked this she was pretty fast for an M20 car

Image
Then this one which we all know about.

I've got it bad now i've gone through all of these! Plus there have been several breakers come through also! Whats the next one going to be?!

superb thread russ and a cracking opening post from you, enjoyed reading this

my is, is my 1st e30 , so not much to write about, but it was the 1st e30/bmw i ever drove, and still is actualy, and i bought it and love it, only e30 i ever been in apart from that was my uncles in the early 90s somewhen i think a silver standardy type 320i or 325, he lives in newcastle so dont see him to ask him about it what it was but he drove it down with my cousins once to visit, a time when they would of been newer and more expensive

not sure what my next car will be but i want a ttech 1 sport/alpina/hartge or something after my is , although cant see myself selling that yet, was talking to my mate earlier about getting my xr3 finished asap in next couple of weeks and putting it on the road this summer and using it, then either decide keeping it, or selling before winter, putting my is in garage over winter, and spend the winter looking for another e30 of some sort and having the 2 and a real garage queen one

e30s i want to won at soem point- a tech 1 sport, a red e30 of some sort, a red m3, and a silver e30 , a nice silver tech 1 sport would be nice

Yes but almost ALL of it lives on in various other E30's across the UK and even as far away as Spain and Thailand !

Plus the cash generated has been piled exclusively into the Touring 8)

The only bits that I didn't have time to take off were the ABS pump and brake servo. At a push I could have taken the vents out of the dash as well but thats about it.

Everything else that went with the shell was scrap.

Almost everything else has now been sold and is keeping other E30's alive

Great idea for a thread. Ive been looking back getting my old pics out. Here goes:

I was fortunate enough to have motor traders insurance when i passed my test so went straight into 325i's at 17.

First one was a trade in - a more door chromie with a LSD and sport seats, and a matching 325i plate.

Image
Then onto the best of all my e30's a 2 door 325i, se spec with sport seats. I put on new Hartges, a genuine Alpina 6 branch and system and i also had it chipped. It also had a lsd and c/r box. It Flew and sounded epic.
Image

Image
I then got this C2 2.7 - It was auto with an open diff though, so it didnt stay long.
Image

A few years went by and i got the chance of this Sport Evo. Spent a few months tidying her up and sold her on:
Image
Image
Image

And after another few years i bought my current C2 2.7:
Image

There were a few more along the way, but i have no pictures of them. The one i look back on with the best memories is the white 2 door car, CBZ 400 above. It for me anyway is everything an e30 should be. Fast, Great handling, Looked great but sounded even better. I can still remember its Huge thirst for fuel! It was previously owned by a local BMW indy, and he blueprinted the engine not long before he sold it to me. I loved it!

I dont have pics of my first E30 but it i have fond memories of it!
Back in 2002 after a sucsession of fast fords i bought a gloss black 2dr 1987 D reg 325iSE manual with an odd spec of M technic suspension, bottle tops, electric windows, sunroof and Recaro LS "highback" seats but no PAS.
It had done 175000 miles but still went like a train and i had much fun in it until i swapped it for a mk5 escort convertible! :o:

The scecond E30 i do have a pic somewhere but i cant find it.
In 2005 i bought a 1989 G reg gloss black 325iSE auto convertible, 15" BBS, black leather and a tech 2 steering wheel. I didn't have this long as i lost control of it in the wet and bounced it of a lamp post, through a fence into a tree. Luckily i walked away unscathed unlike the car.

Third time lucky!

My beloved tech 2 sport! Back in 2006 I bought this from a colleague when i worked for Renault, It was a totally standard tech 2 sport with not options, just the standard sport spec which is actually quite good. What really attracted me to the car was the low mileage of 32000 and my friend being the second owner but also because it was unmolested and rot free.

Image

At Gaydon not long after i picked it up.

Image

And how it looks now

I will never sell this car as i have many sentimental reasons to keep it, its in exceptional condition and has cost me a small fortune!

Image

In 2007 i bought this high spec 4dr Alpina C2 2.7 in Alpina green with A/C, cruise, rear blind, full alpina bodu styling, Alpina long range tank.
I did think about reshelling it but decided against it. I ended up breaking it as it was epicly rotten, the engine and ECU lives on in B7's cabrio, the long range tank in Simon13s Alpina 2dr, the boot spoiler on Oguz327's silver 327i and other parts in various other E30's.

Next up was this, a 1989 325i convertible with a great spec! Dolphin grey, indigo blue leather, Alpina sport pack engine conversion, M technic suspension, sport close ratio gearbox, LSD, shadow line trim, tech 2 steering wheel. It had done 78000 miles is one of the cars i regret selling as it was so nice. I sold it after i tried to kid myself it would be practical with a new born. It was sold to a zoner.

After the cabrio was sold i bought this off the same guy i bought my sport from. A 1991 320i touring in sterling silver with anthricite comfort cloth, electric front windows, electric roof, dealer fit air con, and a pair of tech 2 bumpers that had been retro fitted along with some 17" BK reps.

Image

This is how it ended up just before i sold it. standard bumpers back on as well as some 15" BBS, the Bilstein/eibach suspension and Magnex exhaust off the green Alpina amongst some other new parts. I was going to get the Alpina 2.7 engine from the green car but i sold the touring to replace it with an E36 for my mrs.

Next up is "CDE"! The legendary S50B30 touring that i bought from a zoner called Old_skool. The shell was getting scabby in places and i prefer 2drs so i bought the mint brilliant red 1991 318i Lux to reshell the car into.

Which ended up like this. I ended up selling this to Billgatese30 which he killed on a track day but CDE will live on in another brilliant red shell, M3 flavor this time.

This little gem is the last E30 i have owned. A 1987 316 which originally was pov spec of wind up windows, manual sunroof, no central locking, steel wheels, manual steering. By the time i had bought it it had received 15" BBS, tech 1 front and rear bumpers, black sport leather interior and tech 1 steering wheel. My intention was to M52B28 this baby as apart from two scabs by the rear lights, was totally rot free which is a bit of a novelty for a chromie. I had an E36 328i donor car and other parts building up for it but alas, after writing off my daily car i needed to replace it so i had to sell the car and all the parts i had. the car was sold to Joe-318i on here and he continues to enjoy it.

There have also been a few breakers, 2 325i cabrios, a 318iS, a 2dr 325iSE, the green alpina to name some.

There will be another in the future thats for sure.

Absolutely fantastic reply mate cheers for that enjoyed reading that and cracking pictures!! Absolutely love the white two door, stunning car and like you say all things to all E30's!! :-) Know what you mean about epic fuel consumption - my current 83 320 running motronic one and a 3 speed auto utterly raids through the juice and ive had a lot bigger engines before - all worth it though!! :-) Loving your current car :-)

Just a short one for me.

Had a 1991 325i touring
Image

Which I swapped for a 740i which is my daily driver now. Anyone know the whereabouts of my tourer?

Image

And then I got a 320i with a 325i engine with a sport kit on it.

I love e30s there is something magic about them.
