Before:
It actually looked a lot worse than this picture suggests, I think the shadows have hidden some of it.

Tailgate sourced from scrapper and painted, surface rust below tailgate removed and painted, strange tailpipes removed and replaced with OEM black ones, scraped bumper trim replaced with nice new OEM, window trims replaced although still waiting for delivery of final trim. Wiper replaced and squirter blockage removed. Badges replaced for new.

Nice job! Your old tailgate was rusting in exactly the same place mine was. I also replaced mine completely. It's nice to get all the wiper stuff working again isn't it?

Did you paint the inside of the tailgate or anything to stop it rusting from the inside out (like they seem to do)?

Mines getting bad now, the l;ittle adjuster nobs has pushed into the tail gate recently

+ another.

What is it with the tailgates and Sunroof panels? I've got what is outwardly a mint Alpine white Touring save a rusty sunroof and tatty tailgate.

Only two things left to get working on mine are the headlamp level adjusters - which I cannot be bothered to fix - and the rear wash which just fills the tailgate with wather. I've already sourced a matching tailgate and am looking forward to swapping it. Did yours fit correctly? I've heard they sometimes don't line up.

By sheer fluke the tailgate turned up the same colour as the car, there was no rust on the inside that I could find, so just got the outer panels done. There was a little rust at the on the the car itself where the tailgate closes so I got that smoothed and painted as well.

The tailgate seems to be a bit of a rust magnet as the rest of the car is fine.

What seems to happen is that water runs down the tailgate glass into the seal groove at the bottom, then cannot escape,so it rusts it's way out....
I have filled this channel on my touring with black silicone, not as attractive as the rubber seal, but if it is still rust-free in 5 years then this is the answer!
