I'm no purist, you can do what you want to a sad old chrome turd, your only temporarily delaying its conversion to a tesco value toaster. What i find strange that with all the readily engine upgrade options out there you would choose to spend vast quantities of money and time reinventing the wheel ? :?

Aren't all engines revolutionary? :?

I assume are referring to the fact I am not using a BMW engine...?

Well I investigated this a lot, and the £ per bhp figures didn't look to healthy for buying then tuning an M3 engine, and I don't want to use a straight six, as they are too heavy, so I looked into Cosworth engines, and even debated using my already 350bhp LET Vauxhall engine out of my old car, but decided I'd use a 5 cylinder engine.

I know I could get 500bhp easily with a Cossie, or a BMW engine, but I just want to use something original... Not many Cossie BMW's, but I know of at least one! (Fuzzy!!) And I'm sure there are lots with the big BMW engines in...

I will be spending half the money on the Volvo engine than on an M3 engine!

Not sure what you mean by Tesco value toaster...?

Picked up a new car today for running about in... Will get some pictures up in the morning!
As we gather in the dying days of a wonderful car - one last question - where did you find it? Was it for sale on the Zone, ebay or a local rag etc?
I only ask so I can keep my eye out for similar.

Its not all that bad mate - I've take everything off with the most care possible, so it can be sold / given away! I do respect the old girl, I just needed a good shell, and this was the best I could find! I do feel a little guilty, but needs must. Would rather use this, than a shell I'd have to patch up loads of rust on.

And for the record I got it off Autotrader, from a small forecourt in Chesterfield...

Autotrader or local free ads are probably the best places to get a bargain as people on here or ebay tend to know what they are worth.
A lot of non enthusiast owners still have E30's and to them its jut an old BMW so when the time comes to sell, they can be cheap.

Well then, this project had been put on hold due to work commitments, and the fact that my girlfriend and I have moved into our first place, which is an apartment, meaning we have no drive / garden / garage... Boo!

Anyway, after much faffing, I have managed to rent a garage off a friend who is very local. Its only a single garage, but it will do the job at the moment. The car has been sat on another friends drive for a few months, while time and money were at a premium, but it should start taking shape soon.

The car is now almost fully stripped - its just a rolling shell now, with the engine / box / interior / some panels removed.

I've decided to go with the Audi s2 quattro 5 cylinder engine now, rather than the Volvo one, having had a lot of time to think it through. (Someone did suggest it in this thread a while back if I remember correctly...)

So, I am now going to do a bit of research into different options for BMW running gear etc, as I want to build it at the highest spec can, to take the power I am aiming for, and will be looking into different rear axle options, and M3 bits (5 stud etc)

Will hopefully have the shell on a rollover spit soon too, to allow me to work on it easier.

I'll be advertising all the bits I'm getting rid of on here asap, as I need the space, so keep an eye out, as there are some mint bits!

Cheers all!

The standard lsd are very reliable upto 400hbp and equivilent torque, however if you want it unbreakable go for the large case diff found on the m535i, this is what the big power boys in sweden use, some mods are required for installation tho.

Result, I think it might have been my idea. There is a 'small' chance I know of a good engine out of an s4, the only problem is it is auto :(

If you are interested I can try and find out some more info if you want?

Hmm interesting stuff matey - I'll have a look into that wee beasty then, and see what I can find out!

I am debating a semi space frame idea, starting with a decent cage, so am in a bit of a quandary about my options of bits, as potentially anything can be made to fit!

Sorry for the delay in reply mate, but I need to find out a little more about the different 20v quattro engines, as there are two variants (as far as I know) and I'm not sure which one will be better! Better register on an Audi forum and find out some more stuff!

Funds / space are still pretty tight, so I'm not getting anywhere fast!

Cheers gang, Rob.

So then chaps, a bit of an update...

I had moved the BMW into a friends garage, but couldn't really do anything in there as it was a bit small, and he was only really helping me out by keeping the car dry, and I didn't want to take the mickey by getting grinders / welders out and using his electricity!

So after a few months of research and mincing about, me and my mate (my partner in crime with car projects) have just moved into a nice roomy industrial unit which is five minutes down the road.

He's got a few cars / bikes and so have I, so it will make life so much easier as regards keeping everything in one place!

Here's some photos of the unit, which we're currently painting up to be bright and clean!

Oh dear...

E30 wise; it's had a lot more stripped off it, and I'm now looking into roll cage options.

I'm thinking of starting off with a decent cage, which I can expand upon, and make into a semi space frame at the rear, as I'm thinking of cutting out the boot floor / inner arches etc, which will give me lots of room to fit whatever rear diff / wheels I choose...

Progress should be picking up at last!!

Got a bit more work done on the E30 today down at the unit...

Took the front wings off, which weren't in too bad nick, and had a poke around at the front corners of the floor, which were a bit rusty.

Passenger side not too bad:

Sill seems decent:

Drivers side was a bit worse, especially when this dropped off:

A bit of a hole issue it seems!

Here's how it stands now:

Lots of bits stripped off ready to sell to get some funds!

Cheers guys!

I've decided I'm going to go with a Custom Cages roll cage, and just get it without all the profiled ends, as they seem to bit a bit debatable in fitment, so I may as well save a few pounds and profile them myself!

Not sure which material to get it in though, as the CDS is actually lighter than the T45 one, even though I thought it would be the other way round? The T45 jobbie is more pricey though...

I wan to get the cage and start making it in the car, and then expand on it slightly, so I can loose the rear boot floor and most of the cabin floor, resulting in a semi space frame.

Once I've got the spondooly for the cage I'll be ordering and cracking on! (Need to clear a few post-uni debts first; overdraft, credit card etc...)

Cheers chaps!

Aah, the pseudo-jacking-point-rusty-nonsense-problem! It's like popping your e30 cherry really! Sure you're aware, they don't do anything useful, so you might as well remove the other one while you're attacking the shell.

Looking forward to following another mental project!

8) I thought it looked uber cool with it sitting on the deck!

It will be getting some sexy Gaz Golds at some point in the near future, which will perk it up a bit!

Unit is perfect for what we need it for. Looking nicer now we're getting more tools / bits / vehicles in there! It's been something we've been wanting for a long time!

Ha ha! The way things are heading, the floor will be getting attacked quite seriously, resulting in a lot of tubing and a new aluminium floor!

This is now for sale on eBay people...

Item number 170487345989

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :MESELX:IT

It's a real shame it's got to go, but I haven't touched it for over a year, and I can't walk for at least 6 months following a spectacular motocross crash.

Bad times!

Get in touch if you are interested!

Rob.
