not sure about the finish i got -may just rub down the skirts again, fill the tech 1 lines and try again, failing that do the prep work myself then have the body shop paint them...

My camera seems to be able to make red look pink! the finish isn't brilliant to be honest but then i never pollished them back afterwards so that would have made a big difference, need to find a decient diy spray/prep/polishing guide

Sand paper

Get a good surface key, 800? grit wet and dry should do it, use plenty of water and fairy liquid. Clean up the surface and get it dry then go over it with primer give it an hour another layer or primer, not sure whether it's best to let it dry completely or till it's pretty tacky, and then spray 1 layer over it, pretty thin, then a medium layer, then another medium layer. Wait for a few days in a hot place, go over it with loads of water and fairy liquid with some 2000 wet and dry then a polishing compound, I think it's called G3.

Rub the skirts back with 800 wet and dry until 'orange peel' is flat.

Spray again with paint but do thicker coat so that the paint lays down flat on the panel.

If you havent slapped on alot of coats of red just rubbing back and using compound could take the paint back too far.

Going over it with a few coats good of lacquer could possibly sort them out. Spray the paint/lacquer on thick enough to make the area look 'wet'. Looks to me like you have been too 'conservative' with the spraying

Very helpful guys ta! :D

Well ready to start the prep work,

Sanding back the white is gonna be really tedious...
Image
There's a bit of flaking there,
Image
looking like a bit of a mission,
Image
Gonna do the prep work then spray later on do i need to take it back to primer or just a good smooth keyed surface for primer?

Image
still need to prep and prime the other skirt as yet and I've decided to fill the strips in to try and harmonise the thing.

Any further thoughts guys?

Oh and by the way the original paint is peeling off -will this have much impact on the prep work?

If the paint is flaking, then i suggest rubbing all back down to the point is flaking to (if htat makes sense). It'll mean you have to do less rubbing down of the high-build primer to get a perfect finish.

Good to see that the project is progressing mate! Well done!! :D

Where did you get your carbon badges from? I bought some but the rear one wasnt the same shape as an original badge (it didnt have the extra chrome bit to make up for the curve of the boot, if you know what i mean) Instead they just sent me two of the same front ones! Hense it didnt fit :(

Did you dechrome/spray your windows?

I wish i had seen that thread about changing the seat covers before xmas. I had a real B!tch of a time changing mine. Its easy when you know how but for a while it was really doing my head in! But thankfully Brian came to the rescue!

I've bought myself some se skirts from Adi which are waiting to get on...i think i'll leave them plastic black without spraying. Similar to you i'm going to avoid drilling holes into the panels. I have the bottom clips, someone suggested windscreen sealant for the top join!?

Cant wait for winter to pass so i can get back out there and finish the wing off!!

Was v.impressed to see you went for the 2.5 convo!!! NICE... how did that go? All done and working fine?

And thanks for the comments chaps -yes the 2.5 is going like a dream the carbon badges from ebay were fine for fitting straight on, the windows were dechromed as standard, still no fitted skirts lol!

Now I know red is a much loved e30 colour but if I'm honest I'm definately not usually a fan but there is something about yours that is really really nice. Good work she's coming along very nicely!

(even though in some of the pictures she does look pink :P )

That engine bay is looking good.

Any plans to dyno it? Would be interested in what it's putting out.

Looking good! :thumb:

yes there is a dyno plan on the cards but not till i get back from sea, theres still a few bits to go into the bay as yet but again its going to have to wait until i return. The garage in question is Spot on Tuning, and a big thank you goes to Peter for staying well past time to get the job finished, think its fair to say the car has come a long way
