it's a sad job to try and do a quick fix with the dash/loom and engine still in there, and this is the only way to get in properly IMO

well done fella not many would have braved this, it's always good to see early cars being given some attention :D
Thanks yeah hopefully I can give this car some dignity back. I am in total agreement, you have to completely strip interior, dash, engine, brake servo/master and the wiring loom. It’s just not possible otherwise.

Well hopefully dude :)

Well thing is I don’t, I am supposed to be decorating the nursery but just waiting for the plaster to dry out before I can paint!! Baby due in 7 weeks lol

Cheers man, it’s comments like this that make me want to crack on with it even more!

Unfortunately that is very very true! Thanks mate

First off big thanks to mercdriver for the help tonight, made this a whole lot easier with an extra pair of hands around!

Well bet you all forgot about this heap of shiit....

DanThe wanted the manual rack out of it for his quick rack project so thought seeing as it had stopped raining now I would get the front end up in the air and drop the front subframe and steering bits out as I knew it had a fair few parts that wanted replacing.

Image
Out with the old... including 45mm struts, solid brake discs, numerous worn out bushes and a mullered sub frame.

Started building up some recon parts to drop on, I was going to paint the wishbones but I’ve got a bit more of a deadline with this and they are pretty good tbh complete with M3 eccentric lollipops. Got some powerflex anti roll bar bushes with new shackles from BMW, the old subframe had one shackle completely missing and the front tab is also 'gone' it bolts to so the old subframe unfortunately is scrap.

Also bolted in some brand new Q-drive drop links from ECP, got Lemforder stuff for the IS but couldn’t stretch to that for this turd sadly. Still, new is new.
Image
Ignore the 2 blobs of copper grease on the right hand side. I patched this frame up with a bit of a weld as other than some pitting in that area (which had just started to go through) the sub frame was very good.

Image
Little shot of the powerflex bushes in situe...

Just need to tighten up all the bolts on that lot then think about an E36 rack and getting the 51mm struts in.
Progress is progress, comments welcome.
:D

Can't really afford a respray at the moment sadly though I would like to return it to polaris silver chromium model one day 8)

Good nights progress tonight really on the chav

I'm sure its a wierd alfa colour though? (remember me saying about my mates scort mk1.5 being a very similar colour??) It doesn't suit the e30 shell at all but by the time you've parted with about 800/900 notes for a paintjob to get it back to polaris and all the ball ache involved... It might just be worth leaving it the joke it is! You're putting in a lot of effort into making sure its not just a bodge and its done right (in a way it doesn't deserve you doing all that! Should just be a hotpoint washing machine in a council house somewhere after the torturous paint and chavving its suffered.)

Let me know what night you want to do the rest kid

winkeye Then your ass is mine...

Yes probably but I can't see myself raising the kind of money I need short term and I have a bit of a deadline with this one. I'm not ruling out a return to Polaris though.

Actually, anyone got any recommendations what colour I should paint it if not original polaris silver?

I totally didn't notice I hooked the wishbones up the wrong way round LOL

Problems solved and all on the car, didn't take any pics due to shite weather as did it in the rain (again) but will upload some soon.

Put my front struts on with bilstein b6's on aswell but going to need to change the top mounts so they will have to come off again but not before I have removed what is left of the non existant backing plates...

Would really like to clean the struts up properly but sadly these turds are costing me in the wallet and time is my worst enemy so just want to get this one running now

pics to follow.

I'm liking the thorough approach mate, all this copper greasing and making sure everything is cleaned and not half arsed back together. Its made me have a new lease of life towards the golf gti project... nice one bruvva!

I'm happy with the progress we've made!

Might be a good idea dezzy becuase I can fook that god awful spoiler off.....

Can you get painted metal bumpers back to the chrome without ruining the chrome under neath?

Image
(ignore the fuel line) Subframe and roll bar with bushes in the car

Image
Struts in, going to get the corroded back plates off next then I think my OCD means I will paint treat them struts to a good wire wheeling and painting up as they look shit. New top mounts are also required here. Needed to fit them on the car to remove these bits.

Also got these off sweep as I am rewiring this car with a full facelift body loom so thought I would get some bullseyes as that hopefully wouldn't look too odd. As previously stated, the orginal loom had had LED's and other council tat cut and spliced in all over the shop using traditional "twisting wires together" techniques

Try paint stripper mate. I think the chrome will be fooked though. It will need to have had a key to let the primer bight in...

24v chromie FTW.

Haha, not allowed a sticker Ferg you jeb end! The chavs never going to see the original chrome Ferg you're going to have to renew i'm afraid! It'l be fooked. Keyed is the key word here lol. If the paint hasn't flaked then its taken some serious prep and i don't know how much you cherish your nails because it'l take days to pick it off! just matt black it, drop in the fancy angel donk and tell that slag to stop off at mine to sprinkle a bit of that dust on mine to save me the time, effort and hassle!

Right going to weigh this in as Dezzy said I can't have a sticker....

Done a bit tonight, pics to follow later:

Cleaned E36 rack (not amazing but will do)
Mounted E36 rack, complete with DanThe steering linkages

Still waiting on some bits from BMW so not changed my tie rod assemblies to E30 ones yet but it should be easy enough as they are pretty easy to get to.

Fitted new Apec Front vented discs

Put the wheels back on the front and dropped it to the deck, can undo the top mount nuts tomorrow and then back up in the air to get the struts back out to fit new top mounts. Then I have just got to get the remaining corroded splash guards off. Might just cut them off and forget undoing all the hub nuts etc as I can't be bothered and I know one side is on back order forever at BMW as far as I know.

It's a nice feeling putting some bits back onto the car actually, especially uprated/recon parts, it's almost too nice for the chav

Finished off the night by locking the only key for the car in the ignition barrel. What a tool.

Will put a couple of pics in the next couple of days

Had a bad couple of weeks with this car.... First off after rushing the job of bolting some of the smaller piper on the back of the E36 rack I cross threaded one of the bolts and split the rack casing :x

So, managed to grab an E46 one for £28 (bargain)

Image

I changed one of the front top mounts tonight but my lower ball joints on the wish bones are both causing me problems, I noticed the N/S boot has a slight tear, so that wants replacing and the other side has the lock nut partly on, and I cannot budge it either way????

I think the thread is damaged... I picked these up 2nd hand a while back off another zoner and although in VGC I think a year or so getting moved about the shed and possibly the removal method is probably going to see me needing a couple of ball joints pressing in....

Pain in the arse because I feel like I am goimng backwards a bit...

E30's are gay
