You will have to get your car there once done
Took the cam cover off this afternoon and as suspected the exhaust cam has slipped on the sprocket and is retarded, at least 5 degrees, inlet is still bang on the mark with the crank.
Will be rebuilding this with loctite, never known one to slip before

Swapped the vanos seal and put the timing right today, thought I would have a go at monkeys method, straight forward and doesnt affect timing.
With the vanos unit un-bolted there are only 5 bolts to remove, most difficult one is at the bottom

Still plenty of room to get a proper spanner on though

Rags at the ready as the unit is still full of oil, but once removed the job is a doddle

Old stretched outer and hardened inner Vs new

Didnt get any pics of the exhaust sprocket but its now bolted up to the cam with loctite and an extra tug on the cam bolts. Will wait for tomorrow before starting to give the loctite chance to harden

It will do better than that now its timed up proper with new vanos seals etc.. im trying to work out how it could slip a tooth.Dezzy wrote:13.5 quarter isn't to be sniffed at mate.
Would standalone management work well with this?

Floating sprockets Lee, its just the clamping force of the bolts that holds the timing.
No need for standalone at all, nothing wrong with the Siemens on these and they are very exploitable in the right hands.

Strange it made more power on the 2.8 stuff, even with a smaller MAF. Id definatley look into the injectors too, running out of breath at 250hp aint doing it no favours.
This will be awesome when its running right.

Missed this post, yesterday at Santa Pod I was doing 100mph, ive been clocked at 103mph before at York.reggid wrote:what speed does it do at the end of the 1/4mi?
The left outer CV joint failed yesterday at Santa Pod, so I took it apart and cleaned it a bit today to see the damage, right mess!

Chewed up good and proper, will be looking for either a pair of new outer CV joints or one very good second hand to replace with.
Thanks to Andyboy for driving me to the scrapyard for a replacement driveshaft
And Dan you were doing well chipping away at that time until you decided to take a pasenger. (i did tell you to ditch that fat B__s_rD). You were jinx,d we got hauled off the line last year when his belt shreaded! (only joking Ad). I give you your due,s your up there every year going for it

Not many felt sorry judging by the cheers as the CV went bang, coonts
The yellow drag prepped E30 also did a CV joint on the run before mine, he said he'd done two in two months, so it sounds like a bit of a weak point in the drive line, better than a broken diff though!
When we got back from the scrappy there was an E36 compact stranded, also broke a CV.
Will be taking a spare or two next time I go drag racing

Looking at the time sheet even though I got away quicker I was doing the slowest 1/8 mile of the lot, was 2mph down at 1000ft and the slowest 1/4 mph of 99.47

It's the launching that kills of the shafts. Saying that I've done more diffs than shafts
It's a Shame that it let go. Anyway personally I think this cara drag strip days should be numbered. Leave it for fast road and an occasional track day
