The Vax has come in handy at home on more than one occasion.
Its also good for giving the floor mats a once over every few months.

Nice work Barry. Takes me back to doing my A/C retrofit last summer, it's not a fun job, but really satisfying at the end to know its all done to a factory standard. (I just voluntereed to fit A/C for another zoner as well!).
Easy time to clean out and oil the fan motor as well.
Look forward to more pictures of this.

Basicly, every part except the evaporator will be brand new.

Barry? In Shorts?
F*CK RIGHT OFF!! Have you seen his pastey legs?!!!!!!
A shot of him enjying himself with Vezza and and few others

Imagine if you'd paid 300 quid on top of all that for a box of bits Barry???
But agree, That car has to have AC. No question! May have been cheaper to paint it Alpine White 11 though!
Have to say this is the one reason i'm not retro fitting in my convertible. This stuffs 20 years old now and there are so many parts that "could" be classed as consumables now. It can snowball in costs faster than a pissed up perv in a lap joint.

FAO all of those who think working A/C involves a used 'kit' and 3 hours. Alas this is the norm not the exception when retrofitting 20 year old air con 'kits'. Unless you remove a kit from a 134 converted car that can actually be seen working, be prepared to spend LOTS of shekels
I charge £1500 using a combination of new and used bits to retrofit A/C to a 325, and I would rather not, now you know why !

A friend of mine recently got charged this amount to have A/C retro-fitted (and I supplied him the full kit in the first place), and I was surprised, but when you consider it's at least 3 full days of work it makes sense. The job he got done was shocking, and the 'fitter' has passed the air-con pipes through the bulkhead where the wires pass through, by fabricating pipes and cutting the bulkhead!pacerpete wrote:I charge £1500 using a combination of new and used bits to retrofit A/C to a 325, and I would rather not, now you know why !
Those two heater box gaskets alone are a rip off are nealy £20 each, yet we still all buy them!
Anybody fitting air-con should budget for a new radiator, condensor, dryier and R134a kit, seals, mountings, gaskets, re-gassing and front valance spraying.

Two months has passed an i've do the square root of bugger all with this! Ok so thats a slight exageration but i have moved house in that time and been working my bollocks off to pay for it and other things!
The poor turd is pretty much still in the same state as i left it back in April but i have made a few small steps.
First off was after discovering the state of the A/C expansion valve and the two pipes that join it (corroded internally), i had to pull the dash back out to remove the evaporator from the heater box assembly so i could replace the expansion valve and inspect the evaporator carefully.
Heres what the expansion valve looked like inside and its new shiny (expensive) replacement!

The other job i have done is to strip and build the HVAC panel. Heres a pic of the end result but ill post pics of the process on monday as i havent got all the pics to hand.

Most AC kits have been devoid of gas at some stage and most for a long time which is what causes this kind of internal corrosion as the oil in the system only circulates when its working. I managed to fit only a new condensor, dryer and seals to my sport to get it icy cold but i would class this as the minimum although it was still cold when i sold it three years later despite still running on all the original pipework.
I was a little disapointed to find valeo were no longer supporting the e30 for condensors and dryers the other day especially as i had just apparantly sent their last dryer out to danthe. I suppose a nissens one will have to do, didnt realise they were german made, you wouldnt think so with the poor quality of some of their items.
Ive managed to bag a climate control heater box to go in the M3 and am treating it to lots of new parts

No longer self employed but still available for welding duties.
That pesky Danthe the gets the last of everything!
Good work Barry.
I have been watching this thread for a while now and your car will be up there with the best quality cars on here imo

Co Founder of CR24vTM By Invitation Only. Absolutely no riff raff!!!
I have used an EIS condensor from eurocar parts which is german made.
Anyhow, heres the process of building up the HVAC panel.
The E30 climate system uses a regulated temp control system that has a temp sensor for inside the car so when you set the temp on the dial, the system regulates itself to the temp you set it to and maintains it with electronic control of the heater valve as oposed to a mechanical flap that a standard E30 system has.
Here is the control unit removed from the HVAC panel. The temp sensor is very prone to getting blocked up with dust and this is not exclusive to E30's. Here is before and after clearing the dust.

After

The complete HVAC panel stripped

Deffo worth checking Dan, ive seen this on E36, E46, E39, E53 etc and cause problems. Yes the EIS condensors look good, only time will tell how good they are but for les than a 3rd of the cost of a genuine one, they have to be worth a go.
I think it was about £70. I'll be happy with anything below 4 at the vents.
Managed to get a spare afternoon to get the dash back together today which i kind of needed to do as next monday the 19th i have a fresh interior to collect!
I need the car mobile, taxed and tested for moday for the drive to the trimmers to collect it but i also want to have the A/C finished off by then as well and still have all the engine bay parts for it to fit! Fingers crossed it all goes to plan as i would like to bring this to the German show on the 25th so thats a semi deadline to meet!
And ive got to install some audio as well!

The poor turd unwashed but not unloved!

Well, ive had temps like that with E46's and E36's and every thing new on mine bar the evaporator so fingers crossed.

I have bags of both but use the ones on the right as they hold that shitty excuse for a piece of trim on better and the holes always crack around that area.e30topless wrote:just me being a sad homo coont, the rest is perfection, Barry knows what I am like !Alex wrote: one is about 1p cheaper.
