New shiny throttle body arrived today, thanks again to Maggspower! :D

Image

Just waiting on the gaskets and seals for the inlet to arrive, and new caliper carriers.

Found a local German car specialist we deal with that offers live remapping so as soon as the cars rolling again I'll be taking it there to see if they can remove the mystery ECU box.

The TPS - is this adjust by loosening the screws and twisting the switch until it clicks soon as the throttle is depressed?

When I first got the car I took it there, He said I needed rear discs and pads so I sent them down along with new shoes and asked him to fit the lot. I stripped down the brakes today to find some pretty old looking shoes, and one was held secured by cable ties... Dodgy Bast*rd.

So now the spare time I had saved to fit my throttle body next week will instead be taken up fooling around with the brakes, thanks to John Hurst Automotive, Pingle Street, Leicester. http://www.hurstautomotive.co.uk/ ''Keeping you on the right track''

Well, when you have 'clients' who state this sort of thing, what do you expect?

The Z3 now runs better than when we first brought it. Thanks for all your help and patience.

Haha, I see your point!

I took the car there on the advice of several BMW drivers that couldn't recommend him highly enough. Didn't have time or knowledge to do my own brakes back then but will be trying to do as much as possible myself from now on!

To be fair, the shoes may have been in perfectly serviceable condition back then, and the cable-tie bodge may well have been done by a previous owner.

I would be more concerned if they were down to the rivets, as many are, including a Tech 2 Sport I had.

Maurice, you are definately a glass 3/4 full type of guy ! :)

I wish the motorsporty turd I recently bought had handbrake shoes as good as yours ! On a positive note, a craftsmen had JUST fitted new racey discs and pads, while completely ignoring the MIA handbrake shoes !

Whether the cable tie was Hurst handiwork or not, when they had the disc off, as a matter of course they should have checked the handbrake mechanism and reported / repaired as necc.

I am guessing the cable tie is some sort of motorsport fix for foooked backplates ? I think I will stick to spire bolts and speedclips. Meatballs, how are your backplates ?

I think the point is that Meatballs gave the guy some brand new shoes to fit. Whether or not the old ones were good/bad/indifferent or bodged is immaterial. The guy should have fitted the new shoes and didn't.

capisce?

True, if he charged for the work, then yes, the new shoes should definitely have been fitted.

Matt, with regards to the backing plates... I have some minty fresh brand spankers on the Sport. Still need to pull the bits off for you though :o: Been a busy boy today and missed/ignored your calls.

I'll bell you tomorrow, let me know if you need the backing plates etc.

Backplates should be ok for now hopefully thankyou both. I got some Lockheed washers today from a Daewoo fitting kit as per wiki guide, just about to go and see if they do the trick.

I was planning on renewing the hubs and backing plates over the winter with the rest of the freshen up underneath so ideally just want the car back on the road for the remainder of the summer.

the guy either put the cable ties there, or just ignored them when changing the discs. Either way he's a cun t thats shafted me twice and I spent a lot of money with him when I first bought this car. I will mention again that he did refund the welding cash when I sent him the pics though.

I also paid him to replace the gear linkage bushes, I supplied all the parts from my mate at a dealer and the gearchange felt fantastic, just lately though the play is coming back a little, I've done 6K miles and dont drive it hard that often. Not going to look into that until winter though as it'll just wind me up if I find more cable ties and bodgery!

Got some carriers off Jim yesterday - thanks again bud!

Had a bit of spare time before it got dark lastnight so I decided to have a pop at fitting the new shoes. Bear in mind its my first ever attempt at doing this!

Got the shoes on ok I think, all the springs are properly on and the shoes are sitting correctly in the cable mechanism at the bottom. Tried to get the disc on but it was very tight and didn't feel like it wanted to go all the way on. The adjustor is wound all the way in and sitting fairly loose between the top of the shoes, and I double checked that the cable was slack at the handbrake lever. I tried to follow the wiki guide closely and have gone back over it to check each step. Just wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem, or am I the problem here?!

It looks OK. Quite often with new shoes, they are a tight fit and you may need to chamfer off some of the lining to remove the sharp edges that will be preventing the disc from going back on, or at least, wiggle them about until they fit.

It may be that the beehive springs are causing the outer edges of the linings to bow out slightly, so try applying some pressure to squeeze them in a tad.

I think I'll strip them down again tomorrow and try sanding them a little then. Even if I could have got the disc on it felt so tight that I can't imagine the wheel would have span freely, even though the adjusters wound fully in!

I went out at 5.30AM this morning to have another go before work but decided I was making too much noise when I accidentally booted the old disc across the garage floor! So once again wheel back on, car back in the garage for today with my bottom lip firmly poking out!

And Jim - Thanks for your input! :D

You'll probably find that once you get over the initial tightness and get the disc fully on, the linings will fall into line and you shouldn't get much binding - it would soon bed in after a few miles in any case.

Got the disc on without stripping it all down again

Image

Nice firm handbrake, 5 clicks to full operation. The shoes were a little noisy for the first few miles but that soon died down once they'd bedded in I guess.

Now all I need is a hangover cure and it could turn out to be a good day!

Good work there Matt. I found getting those retaining springs in on the shoes a timely arse getting them in first time around...

No updates to add to this other than it looks like I will be selling her early in the new year.

Really can't imagine selling this turd but we are wanting to put our house on the market to buy something bigger, and at the minute I can't see it happening without letting go of the car first
:(

I've not decided how much I'll advertise it for yet, I know what it owes me, but this car was never going to be an investment!

I still need to get the Alpina's refurbed first and may sell them seperately anyway.

If anyone is interested and would like to talk please PM me.

Sad times...

I think you should put it on the market for £15k and not take a penny less Matt :D

That way either get a shedload of cash or get to keep the car - win/win :D
