Just a quick question about your H36. I have an auxilary electric waterpump I got with some Hartge bits. I was told it was for conversions like H35-24 exports.
Yours doesn't have one does it?

Why is there not enough time to do it right, but allways enough time to fix the errors - I borrowed that, just so reallistic in my line of work.

Aaaaaaarrrrrgggghhhhh!
More news please
More news please
Right then been doing a few bits on the car, nothing exciting though. The boot trim is all refitted - Hartge supplied a custom carpet to go over the additional fuel tank so it still looks fairly neat. I've also put the correct telescopic E34 M5 sparkplug spanner in the tool tray, and there's a mint M3 jack, warning triangle and 1st aid kit. The rear light gaskets have been replaced and then lights are fitted and looking smart. I need to fit the Hartge bootbadge but can't decide whether to also have the original M3 badge. Or if not, should I have the Hartge badge on the left side or right??
I've been trying without sucess to source a donor recaro seat so I can rebuild the damaged drivers seat - so if anyone has an original E30 Recaro LS seat for sale, please get in contact! I'm also going to need to get the passenger side leather doorcard retrimmed - the armrest and pocket are in great condition, but the doorcard itself has several gashes, probably as a result of the roof being plonked on top of the car by the recovery company
I'm not sure what to do with the underside of the car. There are a couple of frilly bits of underseal which i'll attack with a wire brush drill bit and treat any patches of surface rust. I was thinking of completely redoing all the underseal but this is probable a bit excessive? Maybe a good clean up, localised patches and then paint the whole lot black?
I want to trial fit the engine and gearbox at some point to check all clearances, then I can get on with fitting some sort of custom bulkhead/transmission tunnel insulation.
The engine needs to come apart as I think one of the exhaust valves on cylinder 2 is burnt out. The headset is rather expensive, I've bought several E30s which cost less!
I've also now got a choice of steering wheels to use, 4 spoke or 5 spoke - what do you lot rekon? The 4 spoke needs the leather re-dying, but that's not a problem.

i think you mean 3 spoke or 4 spoke !
i'd go with the 3 spoker, 4 spokes always feel a bit "grandad". the 3 spoker smaller?

S38 headgasket is a complete rip off its well over £100 and then there are all the intermediate gaskets too. It your splitting the engine there is a headgasket set available from BMW which has everything bar the bolts, its cheaper than individually but still bloody steep!Theo325 wrote:The engine needs to come apart as I think one of the exhaust valves on cylinder 2 is burnt out. If you need any S38 spares Theo, valve etc let me know, I've two engines here with bottom end action
Its not running no but its in the car, has been for over 6mths!
I wasnt happy with the rad I got from Karan so have sourced a complete E28 M8 cooling system with rad, problem is I've been waiting almost 4 months for that to arrive! I have the rad and thermostat, just waiting for the last couple of things to plumb it all in then on with the suspension, should be downhill from here, I've lots of photos so will start a thread when its running....

Oh right, a new radiator is also on my shopping list - there's a VERY expensive trip to BMW coming up I think.
Can you fit an E28 rad in in your engine bay? It was a fairly tight fit on my 335, and I think the S38 is a tiny bit longer.
Here's a photo of your engine doing it's thing, Karan at the helm and me trying to film!

Yeah it'll fit, if you look on the 336.de or whatever its called, its the preferred way of doing the conversion. Karan told me he wanted to do it with the E28 M5 rad but you need to switch to the E28 thermostat housing for it to work, he couldnt source these bits - I dont think he tried hard enough
The transmission tunnel has seen some persuasion with a large birmingham for good measure also, though that had to be done as the mounts Karan made took the engine right back
What rad set up is your Hartge then, surely that'll be the E28/M88 way? There is no way an E34 S38 rad will fit, not in mine anyway

It's an E28 M5 rad on mine too but the engine is quite alot further back (hence the reprofiled bulkhead). There's even space for a viscous fan! The rest of the setup comprises of the E28 thermostat housing, a modified pipe which runs across the front of the head and an E34 M5 header tank.
Deffo the 3 spoke wheel!

I got the 3 spoke wheel and it feels much nicer then the 4 spoke

Hell, room for a viscous, your lump is far back!Theo325 wrote:It's an E28 M5 rad on mine too but the engine is quite alot further back (hence the reprofiled bulkhead). Sounds like my cooling system will be along the lines of Hartge's then, I'm not sure which header tank I'll go with yet...
3 spoke wheel looks better btw
Started taking the engine apart today and found further evidence of tuning done by Hartge:

I'll be very interested to see what power this engine makes, in standard guise the S38B36 makes 315bhp - this has lairy cams, headwork, no cat, supposedly better E28 M5 exhaust manifold and a remap. Should be rapid!
