At long last its update time peeps! :D

Got a few things done today but had a few set backs which slowed me down a bit.. Just glad to be nearing the completion of the conversion itself! :o:

First off i took your advice rav man and cleaned and sprayed up the heatshields:
Image

Went to fit it and its hitting the bottom of the prop bearing..Problem number 1  Not sure what bearing is supposed to be used as it writes "328 manual" on the prop itself.. What prop bearings do you guys use?

I then moved onto slimming down the Bmw fan im going to use: winkeye
Before:

Image

After:
Image

Image

Its like bmw thought about us converters out there as these circle markers are perfect for the fan fitting kit i will be securing it on with 8)
Image

Before i fitted the fan i thought id have a trial fit of the rad itself and here comes problem number 2 of the day:

The original M20 rad bracket sections are stopping the rad from going right down to the bottom, Anyone else had this problem? How did you resolve it? (Without resorting to crude methods lol)

I apologise for the blurry pics! :o:

Image

Image

Image

So then i decided to fit the manifolds and found that the front one is hitting the steering linkage...Problem number 3

Image

I just ended up using my grind wheel to grind the edge off and it has plenty of clearance now..

Image

tried to fit the downpipes but i dont have the springs for the bolts and the pipes just didnt seem to fit right, dont know wether it was me being tired or if there was actually something not right but ill get some pics next time im out there.

So technically to have it running i just need the downpipes + Rad n coolant in n its done 8O so close now i can feel it!!

With the rad tabs they do need to be out the way, I cut through one part of the weld then bent them down just in case i needed them back at any time.

Strange with the linkage hitting the manifold though, is it a standard rack you are using?

hey Lee, yea im pretty certain its standard, its frankenstein remember, nothing is ever strange to me anymore with this project lol

Like i said ill get a pic of the downpipes too as something didnt look right to me..but it was a warm day n i was knackered so it might have just been me

Btw ive just had a look in my thread and its only the passenger side rad mount that needs to be out the way.
Good job because this is the nightmare i had :(
leeparkes wrote:UPDATE.

The £20 E28 rad is in but it wasnt without a fight,it took me nearly 5 hours from start to finish 8O

Image

M20 rad was out in 20 minutes, then i slid the M30 rad down to see how it sat and it didnt, i had to chop the passenger side mount off BUT i couldnt get a grinder in there, then i tried the dremmel and failed, in the end cut the weld with a hacksaw blade then lost my temper and belted it down with a two foot iron bar! job done!

Then i lined up the brackets at the top of the rad and drilled the holes to secure it,all was good until i realised i couldnt get the nuts on the back of the bolts :banghead: so the grill had to come off with the headlights to get to the back of the bolts, then i had to make holes in the shell to get the bolts on.

These are the nuts and bolts in question vvv

Image

Image

Then once the bolts were lined up i tightened it up only to realise my leccy fan had to be moved over a touch as the rad was squashing it against the slam panel,so rad out again and bash and relocated the fan so the rad would tighten up flush against the shell, another job done!

Next problem!
i forgot i needed a bottom hose from an E28,so top bodging skills came out,id got loads of bits of exhaust pipe knocking about so i cut 5inch off some 45mm pipe smoothed the cuts then cut the E34 bottom hose and joined with the piece of pipe to extend it.
The bodge vvv

Image

The next problem was getting to bottom hose to stretch over the bottom radiator stub,so had to take the rad out again and it made it easier to stretch the hose over the stub while it was out of the car then wrestled the rad back it with the bottom hose attatched then bolted the rad back up (again)

After this it was plain sailing apart from scraping my knuckles various times trying the get the bottom hose on the stat housing,
top hose went on with no trouble then put my car back together filled up with coolant and bled it (for about an hour) then took it for a spin.

It is keeping the engine much cooler and i now hardly have to use the fan,IMO the m20 rad will work with the m30 and it 'wont' overheat but the fan is on quite a lot so its a good idea to invest in the e28 535i rad.

Ive took photos of the clearance ive got with the e28 rad

Image

Image

Im happy with it :D

Next job to do,get it on the rollers and see what its pushing winkeye

I also grinded the tab off on mine, angle grinder FTW :D

Would a DanThe steering linkage help with the manifold problem?

I did the same as Lee with the rad mounts "adjustment" and got the manifold to clear the rack ok with a bit of accurate grinding.

Nearly there mate

Just finishing off the interior at the moment. Getting the seats retrimmed hopefully, just waiting on the guy to do them.

Mechanically everything done, just needs a bit more tuning/mapping.

It's getting there, albeit slowly :D

Update time peeps! :D
Woke up to heavy rain and completely grey and miserable skies so i thought it was a no go for the E30..then out of nowhere it brightened up! So i didn't waste any time! 8)

Started off by fitting the downpipes and exhaust..

Now just before i did this i started it up briefly without the manifolds on and recorded it..well i thought i recorded it :o:

Turns out i didnt press the save button  so its gone forever :( It did make one hell of a noise though! 8O My mum actually came out to see if i was ok haha :snigger:

Image
Image
Image
Image

Then i got to sorting out the radiator and clearance issue..

First i did what you did Lee and got rid of the neariside bracket but I wasn't happy with the way the rad was sitting

Ok on the nearside but way off on the offside:
Image
Image

So i got to removing the Offside bracket aswell...then i cleaned up the area where it used to be and Fertan'd the front end:
Image
Image
Image
Image

I let that dry while my mate came over for a look at what i was up to..He has one gorgeous E30!

Image
Image
Image

Now where was i, got the radiator in and was going to do the whole Nut and bolt approach like you lee until i stood there and looked at these slots and wondered if i could do something with them
Image

So i went to the scrapper and got the headlight securing clips and screws and thought id give it a go, got nothing to lose!

Image
and what an idea it turned into as the rad is now sitting perfect! makes you wonder what these were originally put there for!
Image
Image
Image

and for a bit of precision
Image

Then i noticed the gap inbetween the panel and the radiator and had a look to see if the original mounting bracket would fit
Image
Image

Nope..i still didnt like the way the gap looked so i got the spare one i had and made a slight modification winkeye
Image

Much better! :D
Image

I then moved onto measuring up the fan
Image
Image
Image
Image

Looking good :D Ill hopefully be securing it tomorrow!

Another thing i did today was to remove that metal cover in the offside rear arch and gave it a good rub down and fertan'd it..going to let it dry overnight so i can spray it tomorrow..
Image
Image
Image

While the wheel was off i decided to try out the Borbet A's and see how they sat with the car this low.. (car and rims dirty)
Image
Image
Image

and i thought might aswell do the front too lol 8)
Image
Image
Image

Until tomorrow peeps! :thumb:
