Cheers, I haven't had much to update on.

I had issues with my fpr going bad. Killing the already failing pump. So changed the pump out, just general service items. Also acquired a CD43 BMW Business CD head unit and added that today, meanwhile adding AUX for mp3 and whatnot. Going to go back and flush mount it at some stage.

Apart from that, still haven't done much in the way of turbo, was planning on changing out to headstuds but as mentioned before, stuff happened :)

The exhaust starts with some bits and bobs. Bends, pipe, bosses and v band clamps :)

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Some messing abount and sticking together to make sure it all fits

Image

Image

And them we can see that there are problems with the oil filter housing. Also for the astute observer, this was all test fitted on my friends cabrio.

Image

Image

then get it all stuck together

Image

Image

Image

A quick description, the oil filter housing needs to be rotated 90° so that the oil filter faces down. Hoses will need to be made to have this work. Further more there is a Lambda (O2 sensor) boss ~1m away from the turbo - this is per instructions for O2 sensors. Also the ETG sensor should be before the turbo, however no room and in case of maintenance it would be a pin to get at. I have been informed that they burn out.

The WG should also be perpendicular to the exhaust at 90° - again no room due to A/C

Image

Image

Image

Image

Then the time came for a change to ARP head studs but first some more bits just in case - I didn’t plan on taking the head off because the engine is a budget stroker with ETA pistons and 2.5 head. I bought a new head gasket just in case and then I was offered a MLS head gasket for a pittance.

Image

Image

Took the turbo apart to inspect it and clock it

Image

Image

Image

Image

Then, well lets just say fun times were had by all. We put a stud in and it tore out the thread between 6-5 cylinder on exhaust side.

Image

Image

Image

So with some hesitation went with helicoils - the idea is to but time serts here but I was afraid that it would require too large of a hole - and on the m20, there is limited room

Image

Image

With MLS and head studs

Image

The stuts are tighhtened to 95nm - note that everything was cleaned in detail :). So while there (famous last words) I added some assurance.

Image

Image

Then it came time to make some holes.

Image

The oil pain is currently being wielded, it will have a baffle and I will be adding a windage tray. Also just cause it will need it, I bought a Sachs performance clutch. It should be good for ~450nm (as per testing from a friend)

What will you do about having a spark plug lead so close to a red hot turbo?

The turbo will have a blanket. Furthermore the leads will be going in another direction as I will have wasted spark as coil near plug set up. If it decides to melt the lead. Then cut the flange for the turbo and rotate it towards strut. I guess we will burn that bridge when we get to it. :)

Might be worth wrapping the plug lead with some heat insulation wrap of some sort...

Added the baffle to the sump

Image

Image

And while there added the windage for the crank

Image

With the sump all nice and done, it was time to wrap the exhaust mani, and down pipe

Image
Image
Image

Then moved onto fitting a thinner A/C(AUX fan) and intercooler

Image
Image
Image
Image

Then it came time to chop the front valance to allow room for all this stuff and see what do to about the oil cooler

Image
Image
Image
Image

The factory oil cooler was used with banjo fittings (m22 x 1.5). Sitting just below the factory location, but not too low as to have it get damaged (I hope)

Image
Image

A new cooler has been ordered as this was basically a mock up.

It fits...
Image

With some editing of the mtech front valance :(

Image

While at it, changed the radiator out

Image

It all a very tight fit, with air con and all and checking the clearances it is going to be fun when the turbo sits in there. Speaking of that, that would be next, including 90% of the exhaust and making a start on charge pipes.

Its all a tight fit, when I want to have AC and stuff. Ahh well it might all fit under the bonnet.

Dont have a swedge so made some something.

Some electrical work, adding coil near plug, sequential injection and all that happy fun stuff.

After some consideration we will add a cam sensor.

I will need to do something about brakes and have decided to look at the wiki. Grabbed the Chrysler front disks and renault megane 225 front calipers . Will need to make up a braket but the offset is good and it fits under a 16" wheel. Will also be trying 300mm single pot rear dics from a 120d :) The hats are almost identical to the e30 in size. Will see when we get to that.

This is currently how it stands, at 0.8 bar and a slipping clutch. Should be sored in a day or two. Will be pushing 1.2 bar hopefully might try 1.4 bar but we will see.

Found a solid set of French hedlights and fogs, well actualy a friend bought a car with them. He dosen't like them so we made a trade.

Been driving around for a few weeks now. Managed to fit the recaros. The main downside as it is getting hotter is that there is not enough airflow over the a/c condencer due to the intercooler. It cools, but when not moving it seems to be in the high teens. Note that it was converted to from r13a to r134a or what have you. Anway here aew some pictures.
