I think its bollocks, ive seen tourings rust as much as any other E30, the reality is the ones that last longest had better sealant/paint or more wax when being put together.

My '88 touring was built in October, also has keep fit front windows! Took me a while to find an un-molested RHD centre console.
I have a set of bottle-tops with very good Toyo tyres if you are interested....
These early tourings were better built, very few 88/89 one's seem to have rust issues.I have had two late one's(K and L plate)through my hands that were very rusty, the L plater had a two piece tailgate...
Rob,I have odd bits of touring trim in stock, let me know if you need any bits.
Seat re-cover is not difficult, time, patience are the tools you need.
Good find!

the early ones were built @ regensburg. The same plant that built the e34's. Strange that e34's are pretty good as well? Its not ball bags. The later tourings were made at dinglofing and do seem to rust.
I've had maybe 5 325 tourings, they have all been very solid ans nothing like a norther saloon can look like.

The touring in my sig is very solid, it's an '89 318i. Onlyt thing it's ever had or needed is a plate on the sill. Pretty suprising since it's had such an abused life and it tatty as hell.

Am resisting the temptation to start messing with the touring until the bronzit turd has gone - just a few swaps so far :

Bottletops are very corroded - but have matching Pirelli Tyres all round . Might get them refurbed when they are off the car for "heritage" purposes

And so it begins

Have you told the person you bought it off about the history of the car? Is this the one that they tried to sell it on ebay twice and it only went for £400 or so each time then was messed about by the buyer, so they joined here to sell it?
Regardless, glad you got something to talk about pal.
Makes your car very special.

Yes its that car.
I didn't tell the guy who I bought it from what I had found out after I committed to buy it as I didn't want him to change his mind or up the price !
In terms of the work it needs the price I paid was about right for an unmolested, un maintained 325i Touring with ( questionable ) MOT.
Whether it being 001 will add much in the way of value once its sorted remains to be seen.

Gonna tackle a few jobs on this turd tomorrow if the weather is OK. So far I'll I've done to it is fitted my Tech1 steering wheel, swapped the bottletops for my BBS and made a big list of jobs.

I need to put a sponge over it to find out exactly what im dealing with - its solid but pretty tatty on the paintwork and will need a blow-over to do it proper justice once all the other stuff is sorted.
Fuel filler pipe :

Yep thats fecked
Will be one of the first big jobs I reckon.

Think the exhaust is FUBAR - have got to either bodge it up or swap it for the stainless one of the chrome turd before this weekend's meet as its blowing its bollox off.
Unfortunately the one fitted is a 2 piece and the one off the chrome turd is a 3 piece and I can't seem to get a definitive answer as to whether the manifolds are the same fixing

Definitive answer is to take it off, have you still got the chassis number for the chromie? If so compare the part numbers in real oem
Would be worth you taking the manifold off anyway for new gasket

Bollox. Just compared the manifold part numbers and they are different so looks like I can't just swap the exhausts over without swapping the manifold as wellDanThe wrote:Definitive answer is to take it off, have you still got the chassis number for the chromie? Rob, i found out the hardway in the snow. Pre and post facelift M20B25 manifold ARE different!
If your after a filler neck i've got the one off my touring, bit of surfice rust but solid. Assuming i won't need it for my chromie when i swap the tanks over it's available.

just fit the whole 3 piece system with the manifold over. As Dan said good excuse for some new copper nuts/studs and gaskets. Noice
you'll have more tears trying to unbolt the front sections from the manifolds. They're good at being a pain in old rusty age.
Get the engine nice and hot, loads of WD40 for a few days before you start and the job should be a good un on the manifold studs. You'll be unlucky for one to snap on you imo

Had a look today Si and the stud nearest the bulkhead appears to be missing and there is a nut missing at the other end. Could have a snapped one before I start by the look of it.
Also no chance of getting the engine hot to get the manifold off the chromie engine as its sat on the floor of my garage ! I unbolted the downpipe from it today without too much aggro but I don't really want to try and pull the manifold off it and bugger the head up as I need it sold.
Will make a decision after the ebay auction is up this weekend - if I don't get a buyer for the donk I might have a go at it.
Other option is just to buy a log manifold secondhand suitable for the 3 piece system - won't be much I guess.
Done some other stuff on it today - will post some pics in a bit

don't worry about the chrome engine just unbolt it that end, nothing else you can do. Just get the black engine hot. You won't bugger the head and if a thread did go then it can be sorted out much easier than when in a car. Most have the problem so its not a major issue.
I have a log off a later car here, but they are heavy. Infact one is attatched to a stainles set of down pipes for a 3 piece system.

Ok so time for a little update :
Started this morning by pulling out the "comfort" seats.
Gave the carpets a pretty good vac but not gonna remove or shampoo them until the weather gets a bit warmer.

One In
BMW Sports seats are the Don - and finally got some in my favourite cloth

Other side in
I have enough spare material from the old seats to get the bolster re-trimmed. A job for over the winter.
Next I thought I would fit the glovebox from the bronxit turd as the one that came with the car is fecked.
Unfortunately I then discovered another pre/post facelift difference

Spot the difference - the upper plastics/wiring are laid out differently on the later model so the earlier glovebox doesnt have the cutout to clear it. Oh well another part for the list.
Then got to grips with clearing out all the stones
from the engine bay :

I got a quarter of a bucket full !
This is what I found when I opened up the airbox :

Filter was shagged - straight in the bin

Really starting to like this turd now a few morsels have been added

Also fixed the blower motor ( seized solid - plenty of WD40 and 3 in 1 oil soon got it going on all settings )
And have codged the exhaust so I can drive it to the meet on Sunday - one of the pipes that goes under the rear beam where its flattened off has a hole about as big as a 2p in it and another smaller hole further along. I've put a gun-gum exhaust bandage on it for now - its not stopped blowing but its about 70% better than it was.
Final job was to take all the slack out of the handbrake cables ( of which there was a lot ! ) - Now much better but still need refurbing I think.
