bin in a discovery that had the 2.5 its not a patch on this engine
the grunt and sound is awesome i love it.
no disco was fitted with the vm
only the rangie and it would blow the doors off tdi

Your right, no disco was fitted with the VM, and the rangie was only for a very short period of time....Reason being in standard trim the 2.5 wasn't such a good engine as the Tdi- whilst being a little more refined they didnt tend to be as strong either. They also lacked the torque of the Tdi. A decent Tdi out of a disco when tweeked isnt too bad at all- I ran one for just over a year and wound the turbo, and the pump out a little ant to be fair to it, it performed really well. Having driven both my disco and a VM (2.5) rangie offroad I would tend to agree with the general consensus that the Tdi was more torquey, and more flexible through the rev range.
Wouldve thought that sticking the lump out of a 525Tds would be the way to go for E30 diesel power...... But if you can squeeze that lump in it should be Mightily impressive!!!! If not I have a mate with a RR Bobtail looking for an engine!!!!!

may i just say you are a nut job. not a performance engine etc bla bla bla its just a lump you had around and an e30 so stick them together
free fuel so crack on. i like crazy ideas like this
lets have a few pics of this cause i wanna see how this big lump fits
that cossie is the nuts too!

il take more pics as the major components come together. ordered an adjustable fuel pressure reg today im gonna try use existing in tank fuel pump and just set reg to 5 psi for diesel pump feed

so far i cant see any reason it wont go in and work. hopefully have the engine in for a dummy run again with gearbox fitted next week and then mark the sump up for oil pan relocation then hopefully the 3rd time engine goes in it will fit properly and i can make engine mounts
thanks for the comments guys, it should be the only 336 tds in the country id of thought

Only 160kg heavier than an M30B35, or more than twice the weight of an M20B25 then - should make for interesting handling...
Wacky creations like this are cool though - best of luck

book says 380 kg for the engine but tbh it doesnt seem that heavy. heads are alloy. maybe theres some extra gubins involved when its a boat engine that increase the weight ? worst case senario i may need some different front shocks and springs and with a couple of psi more boost and an intercooler should see 170 hp 250 lb ft easy enough if needed. i think these engines are set up very conservative as in a boat its a constant pull and much harder work than turning wheels on a little old e30
i have a local r/r that i will tweek it on when its finished.

What will it rev to, or is it the sort of sloggy torque-monster where you just leave it in 5th gear?

max revs are 4200 rpm 150 hp and 2400 rpm 300 nm torque. and thats with no intercooler. the e36 325 td is 115 hp then the 325 tds is 143 bhp and only difference is slightly bigger turbo and a intercooler so 180 hp should be easily achievable.

just done speed calculator with the getrag box, 205 50 16s and a e36 325 tds 2.56 crownwheel and pinion at 4200 rpm speeds are 1st 30 mph, 2nd 56 mph, 3rd 85 mph, 4th 113 mph and 5th 142 mph. that should be pretty good gearing to use the low end grunt i reckon.

What will stop the front chassis legs from splaying apart, or did you leave the bottom section in place?

Good thinking, I like the idea of an engine you can just push in and pull out with an unboltable front crossmember - saves alot of awkward juggling

picked the flywheels and adapter up today, bit of fettling and drilled new mount holes on bmw flywheel and its on fits perfect

just waiting on reducer bush now for gearbox input shaft. got some 4mm plate aswell to make adapter for between bellhousings to fill the gaps in. engine with no sump and gearbox on properly should be in again for dummy run 2 hopefully friday

its 4 holes drilled dead opposite dead square so shouldnt make any difference. and all machining has been done perfectly square on a mill and lave.

starter sits below exhaust manifold. needs a tiny bit taking out of gearbox bellhousing to fit. i cant do that till gearbox is fully mounted

Total lunatic but it's awesome to see someone trying something totally different and off the wall. I wanna see how this motor sits in the bay.

gearbox is mounted enough to try engine in the bay. got the sump off and got me bit of luck

with a piston down big end cap is an inch above the face of the block where the sump bolts to. so if i have clearance issues above the crossmember i can have a flat piece of plate for a sump to clear it

and pan will move forward easy as its all universal
