Need to order my ferry ticket thinking about it
75 days to go ladies!
Last time I went to France and Germany the petrol was pretty steep, although it was mainly motorway service stations. You'll be lucky to get a gallon for 4 of your finest english poooounds. Interestingly diesel was cheaper, and LPG was silly cheap. I took a flipping petrol out of the choice of three I had available.

both me and my 'support crew' are booked on the ferry now, hoping to get my engine out this weekend to rip it apart. Look forward to seeing the scrap yard/drive one evening this week Si!
Looking stunning 13!

Done well Si. I don't think people realise the work thats recently gone into this car in a reletively short time frame.Simon13 wrote:in and running, dead tired![]()

Well chuffedPics 2moro
Not only has the donk been rebuilt but the imfamous front to rear pipes have been done, Diff change, Big brakes, interior change, weld up and refinish anything found along with numerous trips to BMW (and all round the south of england) while holding down a full time job.
I couldn't do it in that time so a BIG UP to Si on this. Real heroics going down here. Stand up and take a bow my man

Donk nearly..................in to this!

fookin slut, goes like a rocket. It will no doubt need mapping which is where sheps will be coming in soon for some uniQ action.
I've surprised myself! lightened fly seems to have helped on the low end and it pulls much harder on cam. Idles like a little pig. Lights the tyres up in 1st and 2nd and it's very dry today. Revs in a most un 2.7 like fashion also, spins up very cleanly

I'm going out to give it a well deserved wash. 1st of April can't come soon enough now for a tax disc!

So here we go!
Starting on thursday night with lapping the valves back in, this didn't take long as SPC had fitted new guides and lapped in the exhausts seats on the head already, with the 1 valve i gave them for the original repair which turned into 6 new guides! Inlets were pretty good as it had all only covered 40k since the head was last off!

Valves, springs, collets, stem seals bla bla bla going back in

Valve gear all fitted and the new Schrick 284/272 camshaft
Moving onto Friday night managed to have an early finish from work

Refitting the rockers and shafts, this always seems such an um,,, unsofisticated job!

Head built! getting somewhere

Now this is where i had a thought looking at the head, if you look where my finger is there is a dimple, now on uncracked heavily skimmed heads there are normally 4 of these all over the head. It was missing between chambers 2 and 3 which you can see in this shot. Seeing as this head had cracked and over heated. Probably warped and been skimmed a fair bit now wasn't the time to be taking chances this close to the end. This Alpina head had only 3 dimples. To cut a long story short some phonecalls where made to Demlotcrew,Ant,Pacerpete for some expert knowledge. All came back with the same thing.
Time to get the plasticine out! I was worried that by fitting a more aggressive cam and having a skimmed head we could be very tight or have some valve piston clash. The top picture you can see me blobs of it!

All mocked up with the old headgasket, bolts and timing belt

I ended up doing this twice to be double 400,000% sure! Theres more gap on the exhaust than the inlets. I guess this because its an asymetrical cam, but my feeler guages measured this to be a touch more than 1.5mm. So all was good.
Thanks to the usual heros for the advice on this, so onwards and upwards

Head and blocked timed to TDC, head bolted down and new cambelt fitted

Refitting studs and rocker cover

Same on the inlet

Inlet on and ready basically for the flywheel clutch to go on. It was midnight by now! So i thought better of it and had an early night

So thats how i left it awaiting my return in the morning!

Thanks!
So onwards with the last hurdle and bang upto date
Yesterday started with this

Flywheel on, this was my old lightened one from PYF it's about 5.9 kgs

Box, clutch back on again clutch from PYF but it's only covered 2000 miles so it's as new.
Thanks to boybimmer for changing all 3 gearbox seals and giving it a good clean. I've replaced the knuckle on the selector rod so its not like stirring a pudding when changing gear!

Dangling at the somewhat silly angle needed!

Donk in, i got a little carried away connecting prop, zorsts coolant engine loom bla bla and forgot about the camera somewhat!

Nearly there

All in and fitted, i was somewhat nervous last night to say the least to see if it would start after all that work.
Turned it over to get the oil round and fuel pressure up. To my excitement she fired up on the button i was well chuffed.
Took a fair while to get the coolant bled up but there where no hissy fits with it throwing coolant all over the shop like sometimes on M20 coolant changes
I'm chuffed with the cam choice i think with the uniQ and lighter fly we'll end up with a car which drove pretty much like the engine did standard but with a much better top end
And a quick play in my usual photo location in front of the army base entrance!

Move out the way! haha

It's had a quick wash, so now we can do the more fun things like collect the new tailgate off spadge. The one on the car is horrid.
Gold or silver stripes?! or maybe as it is for the more subtle look

I just looked back through the thread, well done again.
Are they 16" alpina's? They look larger due to the ride height I think. I would love a set of those, I missed out on a 325i touring on ebay with a set, it sold for just 400 quid
