Waxoil FTW

Its the only thing other than an oxygen free bubble that will keep these chariots in existence :D

Restoring a car is a lot like making love to a very beautiful woman, youve got to take your time....

Yep - I had to pull the filler neck out again anyway to get right to the back of the arch with the waxoyl - that spaghetti mess of breather hoses was sorted and all clips put back in place before I put it all back together

Done a couple of jobs that have been on the to-do list for ages today -

Replaced the badly cracked drivers side headlamp with the one I bought off Sweep months ago - got all the adjusters moving whilst I was at it :D

Replaced the non-return valves in the windscreen washer system - I now have working screen washers

2 more things that it "passed" the MOT on last Year  But will pass properly this time around 8)

Does anyone have a guide to stripping the headlamp wiper motors down ? I looked at taking the back off one but it seems the backplate has a gazillion little clips which will be ripe for breaking the second I try and remove it. Blasted down the spindle with WD40 but I dunno if it will do any good

Plan for tomorrows tinkering time is to smoothrite any scabby bits on the passenger side and fit the new sound deadening pads inside.

More waxoyl action today - this time on the passenger side :

Also smoothrited both jacking points and a couple of scabby bits on the front wing lip - just got to wait for it to dry then can waxoyl over the top.

Also attempted to adjust the passenger side handbrake :x Don't know if I've made it better or worse as I havent moved the car out of the garage.

Final job this afternoon as the Mrs is at work was putting the washer bottle in the "parts washer" in the kitchen :D - Its cleaned the outside up pretty well but the inside is still filthy :x

The house stinks of waxoyl too - 'er indoors will be glad when the body repair/preservation side of things is finished for a while :o:

Valeter booked for Tuesday to sort out the carpet, seats and doorcards in readiness for it all going back in 8)

Soundproofing pads fitted to passenger side floorpan today - then it started peeing down so had to put the turd back in the garage.

Drivers side tomorrow if its not raining followed by more waxoyling.

Done an MOT Prep-list - suprisingly less than I thought. I'll feel a lot better about it once the interior and headlining is clean and back in :D

The only unknown quantity which it could fail the MOT on now is emissions - all the other usual MOT worries ( Corrosion, Tyres, Brakes, Suspension, Exhaust, Lights, Wipers, Washers ) are sorted.

Good work there Rob 8)

I wouldn't have thought emissions would be an issue, my red touring in my sig pic was laid up untouched for 6 months, fired it up Jan '10 and took it for an MOT and was fine.

These arrived today :

Image

Smaller ones ( just ) fit in the speaker pods for the rears and the larger ones arent quite as deep as the ones I took out so will fit easy behind the OEM front grilles.

Not sure whether I'll still need the door tweeters ?

I'd still be fitting door tweeters Rob, sounds a lot better as the lift the sound up closer to you rather than just entertaining your feet.

Cheers Dave - I don't know much about ICE - just that I want it to look as close as possible to OEM and sound good 8)

Now I've got the old dash out and I can see where all the clips and stuff are I'm hoping the new one will be a bit easier to get back in.

Should get a photo update tomorrow

Just a thought - while the dash is out and I can get at everything would now be a good time to fit an OBC if I can find one at the right price ?

More fookin expense

Yes because trying to thread the loom for the temp sensor and horn wiring through the grommet in the bulkhead was a nightmare.

Perfect time to fit something like an OBC Rob, personally though i wouldn't bother and save the money for something else.

I remember doing the dash on my old cab, don't think i ever managed to get that clip in the middle of the dash under the screen.

Nah keep fitters are staying Dan - I like em 8O

Not sure on the OBC - depends if one turns up cheap enough before I'm ready to put the dash back in.

I've had one before on my 320i SE - it all worked perfect but I only ever used the clock :o:

I ain't paying silly money because I don't want an OBC that much but we'll see what the wanted thread brings :)

I have noticed not all E30's have this clip ?

Dash swap is quite easy, might sound odd but I highly recommend taking the screen out and dropping it in through there, it's far easier and it won't get bruised/caught on the steering column :D

I can see the theory behind that but only worth the risk if you have the right gear to remove and refit the screen though surely?

Which I don't - I reckon getting the new one back in will be simple compared to getting the old fooker out :D

Grrrrrr

Fookin rusty scrap.

town325i came round today to assist with the clutch hydraulics and replace the front Flexi hoses.

Did the drivers side in about 10 Minutes - came apart easy, bled up and back on its wheels. Piece of p1$$. Thought things were going a little too well.........

Passenger side cant get the metal pipe to the flexi undone - seized solid and now rounded off - gonna need to be cut and new section of pipe put in.

Went underneath, changed the clutch slave, not fitted the flexi yet because it will have to come off again because the metal pipe into the master cylinder is also seized - and now rounded off so will also need to be cut off and replaced - and getting at the bolts to try and undo the master cylinder even with the dash out is a BASTARD :x

Just when I though things were going OK.

Fookin old cars

Can't believe how awkward the clutch M/C is to get at - the dash is out so you can sort of see everything a bit easier but after being upside down with my head in the footwell for half an hour with sweat dripping into my eyes I gave up trying to get the second bolt out. Managed to get the first one out but you can't get a spanner on the second one and you can't get a socket on it properly either as the throttle pedal linkage is all in the way even if you disconnect it - even a liberal soaking with harsh language didnt help :x

Ferg is selling me back the metal clutch pipe I sold him about 6 months ago - just got to sort a new front brake pipe now and the "top hat" clips.

This is defo the easiest way,I did a repair job on my touring's n/s 'screen pillar that needed both the 'screen and dash out earlier this summer and I was suprised at just how much easier it was.

Clutch master?

Go in from the tunnel side with a slim extension!
Your third hand  is usefull for holding the throttle linkage clear.
