I thought it may not be as easy as I had implied, Luckily not had to change one yet.

might seem like a daft question but did you plug the gearbox wiring in properly from the gear selecter :? that plug could stop it turning over

Si's coming over one evening and the first thing I'll do is put 12v straight from the bat to the starter motor. Also change the earth strap back to the original (which I didn't have with me). The one on the car is the one of the alpina so an unknown quantity although the car started and ran the last time I saw it.

Heres where we are at the moment. All very pretty but pointless if the c*nt won't start!

You're thinking inhibitor? Thought of that as well but I don't reckon you'd get a click. The starter motor is definately seeing power on turning the key. If the inhibitor was the problem, no power would get to the starter?

inhibitor, thats the one couldn't remeber what it was called ,

if the starter is clicking I would imagine it's working,

would this be worth a try ? http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... c&t=134078

I have the same problem with one of mine , just lacking motivation at the moment

I'll give it a try but I think yours is a different issue. You have no power to the starter? I deffo have juice to the starter as you can feel the CLICK from the starter motor when you're sat in the drivers seat.

Sometimes when the gear selector isn't quite in say P or N it stops the engine starting to save the box. I've had this puzzled me before. Just check its in gear properly

Im sure you have tried this, but are you sure the battery is charged properly?

Can someone with an auto nip out and put the car in say reverse then try to start the car. Is there a click or just nothing. I'm sure these silence when the inhibitor is in action.

Thanks

Battery is fully charged. It's constantly on a conditioner and I even put a proper battery charger on it yesterday for a couple of hours and the needle dropped to where it would be if the battery was fully charged.

I seem to remember in my auto there was nothing. It was a long time ago though.

I had a similar issue with the M50 transplant.
Engine/chassis earth LOOKED OK,even tested OK,but £2 worth of brand new earth strap and no more problems..... :D
Autobox will suit this 2.7.It's my one regret with my build that I did not source a switchable autobox.Build a 2.7/8 with a lumpy cam and a manual 'box will be needed, but use a reasonably tame cam and the auto will love the torque.

Keep your chin up Trev, it's looking great and will all be worth it in the end. Some times these things are sent to try us, just to make us appreciate what we have.

Keep going fella

A bit of a bugger Trev, looking good though.

The selector was the first ting I thought of, If you don't have it in either P or N then It won't even think about it, I caught my self out with that one when I was doing the timing belt on Neil's(320touring) green 325 auto.

Know what it was? There should be two main cables to the starter. I only had one terminated and the other was tucked up behind the loom.

Si13 found it. EXCELLENT we thought. Huge thanks to Si for his help tonight.

Did it start? Did id f*ck!! Turns over now and fires occasionally but it appears that the compression is beating the battery, even with a jump off Si's Pina.

So Back on another evening with Si's mate's porta pack which apparently spins them over like they're going out of fashion. Si was saying PYF had this problem when he put the new lump in. Stuck a porta pack on it and it spun a few times and fired up.

Fingers crossed.

Well, Si's been a big help again as usual. Thanks mate.

She's still not running   Today we went over with the porta pack and it span over like a banshee. But something wasn't quite right. I swore it was timing so yes you've guessed it!!!! We stripped the front of the engine again(!) only to find the cam timing spot on!!

It was trying to start but only half heartedly even with a canister of cold start rammed down it's gullet.

So i'm sat in the drivers seat, Si's kneeling on the floor head in hands and I spin it over again. Then something told me to whip the cam cover off. Which we did.

Only to find I've left the rocker shaft retainer plate out!!!!!!!!!   If someone had told me that before we looked, I've have bet 200 quid that it was there! Both rocker shafts had spun slightly taking the rocker retaning clips with them. Which meant they are jamming, possibly holding the valves very slightly open? Also we have checked the valve clearance with the only set of gauges i had with me and they seem as though they are VERY tight for some reason. Not sure why. They were set with the head torqued down when the engine was still on the stand.

So back we must trot with a shaft retaner plate :o: :o: and a set of decent gauges to set the top end up.

More later in the week. God this is embarrassing!

Just catching up with the thread. As soon as I read the click and nothing I knew it was the 2nd cable.. I did the same with my M50 swap

Fingers crossed for no bent valves dude! You'll get there with it

I'm hoping so as well!!!!

Heres the anomaly of all time!! This shot was taken JUST before the cam cover was put on. The VERY next photo I took is with the cam cover on.

If I crop that photo heres the peice in place.

Image

and heres the very next photo i took! Look at the surroundings. exactly the same as the shot above.

Image

Yet it's not in there now. I'm starting to question my sanity :x :x

Even Si was getting the hump with it. Despondant wasn't the word. He started off giving it the "it's having a difficult rebirth" line and ended the day agreeing that we should torch the c*nt and claim the agreed value!!

Doesn't it just grind your gears when stupid things like this just fight you and cause hassle and delay when all you want to do is get your motor on the road.

I nearly threw the trolley jack from shoulder height into the garage yesterday when clearing up in between rain showers, but stopped at the last minute when I predicted it bouncing into the spare tailgate sat in the garage

Just my worry too.....all those expensive new shiny bits, the only place it can go is under the cam, very strange.
Now I can imagine that plate getting lost on my garage floor, but not on yours,Trev,it's far too tidy!

it can't fall out, if this miracle did occur then it would mashed the valve gear up by now. The amount this bloody thing has been cranked over since it was fitted

i'm sure you'd notice it in the head also!

I can't remember now if I spun the engine upside down on the stand before the cam cover actually went on. I can remember tapping it home with the mallet.

It's happened some how and thats that. If it's bent a valve the thing will have to wait I'm afraid. I have not the time nor the inclination at the moment.

We'll set it back up try again. I'll bring my compression tester si
