What needs putting back together on it? I wouldn't worry about interior type things for an MOT, so long as the dials etc work and seats/seat belts are secure that's all the matters.
I would defo stick the carpet in before the dash board, Refitting a carpet is a royal pain in the arsethreading it under the heater box amd through the pedal mounts and everything.
That's my 2 pence.
As regards MOT why rush gettting it MOT'd mate for the sake of a month or so salt free driving?
Hang in and give it a fresh test Easter next year because I guess now it won't see a salty road again?
PS I am fooking jealous Rob

How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

You're right Ferg - even if I rush to get it all done and MOT'd in october it would be off the road sometime in November ( hopefully before they start salting the roads ) anyway.
An October MOT works well in that any prep work I can do before the weather gets too cold.
A Feb/March MOT ( which I had with the bronze turd ) means that any essential jobs have to be done when its fookin freezing
I'll have a proper poke around it later in the week

Had a call from the trimmers today to tell me to come and collect my stuff :

Repaired upper bolster - unfortunately there wasnt quite enough grey cloth to make up a full piece so they have had to put a small join in near the top. Its not perfect but I can live with it and its infinately better than the holed material that was there before.

Lower bolster also re-covered.
Both parts also have had new black vinyl outers.

Sunroof motor cover and tailgate hinge covers painted black

Sunroof inner panel - just need to try and find the little holes where the pop-rivets go to put it back in
And the money-shot

Base board stripped back, new foam backing, top quality black suede.
Very very pleased with the results
It was not cheap - took the trimmer 3 full days to do the seat and the headlining from start to finish - but got a result far better than I could have hoped to achieve
Now just got to get the fooker back in the car without damaging it

If it doesnt rain tomorrow I'm "working"
from home - which will mean a bit of work in the morning and then hopefully spend the bulk of the day getting some jobs done.
Hopefully the sound deadening pads I ordered will be here tomorrow so I'll get the metal bits of floorpan inside the car cleaned, get the pads stuck down and then any remaining exposed metal waxoyled - if I've got enough time I'm also gonna jetwash the arches out and get those waxoyled too - that way can really start getting it back together.
probably gonna book the valeter to come and clean the carpets, seats and doorcards next week with a view to getting the interior back in next weekend.

What wiring issues ??DanThe wrote:Whatever you do dont rush to get it back together because you will be more likely to miss bits or break stuff. The wiring issues need sorting before any lower trim or carpet go back in remember
Only wiring I can think of that that needs fixing is the front pad-wear sensor unless you spotted something else ??

Had forgotten about the central locking - have got the ECU from the chrome turd to swap over for starters.

After taking the doors off I can pretty much guarantee it will be corroded wires/connections.
Module could do with being taken out for waxoil duties anyway, ive got a portable compressor you can borrow if you need to

Rob do you mind saying what the headlining cost you? I asked a local trimmer to price it for me and over the phone - he hasn't seen the car - he said £120 for the same job as yours - foam and suede. Just curious.

Done some bits & pieces this afternoon :

Fished out the central locking ECU - central locking has never worked at all since I bought the car.
You can see 1 pin has corrosion fur on it.
Swapped it for the spare ECU from the bronze turd and it came to life
Unfortunately not working 100% - From the drivers door it locks & unlocks both front doors, drivers rear door and tailgate. Passenger rear door lock does nothing at all.
Lock/unlock also works from the tailgate lock but Not from the passenger door lock.
Needs further investigation but I have spare motors so should be able to sort it.

Seems to be plenty of plugs not connected to anything
- Anyone know what these are for ?

Stereo bodgery
It has door tweeters and came with a Blaupunkt Toronto head unit which is correct period and I assumed dealer fit - would a dealer have used scotchlocks ? I friggin hate the things
Then jacked it up and got the jetwash on the go

Did the underside as well but couldnt get it high enough to get the angle on the lance to properly blast it but its much cleaner than it was.
Sound deadening pads also arrived today but only got the drivers side floorpan clean before I'd had enough.

Oldskool
Any visible rust underneath is getting a couple of coats of jenolite followed by a couple of coats of black smoothrite finished off with a smothering of waxoyl.

Not sure where that clips come from but will chuck it.
The tape holding the vent tubes together had rotted away to virtually nothing but the metal behind is sound - gonna batter this with the hammerite/waxoyl combo before the cover goes back on.

The big plug is for the interior light delay relay.
good luck with that jenolite i've tryed that stuff and my bro on his mk1 triumph and we came up with the remarks(wot a load of cr*p) so we use now kurust and we use brush on seamsealer all over the archers. we never use any of the waxoyl(we have used for years stone guard) as we found the waxoyl when it go's dry and water gets behind it and rust the metal but you carnt see it untill its to late....capri_rob wrote:

Water will only get behind waxoil if your putting it over sealed rust and the water is getting in from another route, the water wont go 'through' the waxoil, putting sealer over any rust is a waste of time as the rust will just continue to build up behind it. You would be better off painting the waxoil straight onto the rust as it would soak it up and be delayed 99%
good point, but if clean up the rusty bit and treat the rust with treatment....if the water gets in from the other side then it would be waste of time in the first place...would be worth checking befor do any work like that first if there is any water getting it more at the rear archers where they mostly go at the jointed area'sDanThe wrote:Water will only get behind waxoil if your putting it over sealed rust and the water is getting in from another route, the water wont go 'through' the waxoil, putting sealer over any rust is a waste of time as the rust will just continue to build up behind it. Bit of rust-prevention action today :
Before

After

Underside of batter tray just in case :

Wire brushed the scabby bits of the wing and put a bit on there too - it will do until I can afford to get it painted

This is a bit fooked - wire brushed it and painted but its still not great - It will do until I can find a better one :

The never-ending tin - realised I bought this in 2001 to paint the battery tray in my XR3i

Also fixed the uneven ride height at the back - drivers side spring wasn't seated properly on the trailing arm rubber pad

Full on Waxoyl mode today :

Did the whole innner arch with by brush rather than spraying it on - really well covered now.
Put the Filler nech back in properly, waxoyled it, copper grease on the threads of all the securing screws and then waxoyl over the top ( not that I plan on taking it apart again anytime soon )

Also done the sills - painted the jacking points with smoothrite and then made sure they got an extra thick covering of waxoyl as they are the only exposed bit when the skirts are back on.
Done the drivers side front inner arch too - brushed as far as I could and used an aerosol to soak any bits I couldnt reach with the brush.
Took longer than expected but feels good to have one side done

Hopefully will get the passenger side done on Friday afternoon and then I'll try and tackle the floorpans and any other metalwork inside the car over the weekend.
MOT up on 4th October but I don't think it will be finished by then - need to fix the screenwashers, replace the drivers side headlamp, adjust the handbrake and replace the front brake flexi hoses before I can put it in - as well as at least putting the seats and seatbelts back in - I've got all the bits to do it - every jobs just seems to take 3 times as long as it should
