Oakey,
For now its just a motronic upgrade and tuned on a dyno. In the future I will do a standalone ECU, I was going to do it all at once but I thought i would break it into steps and learn one thing at a time.

Just a small update....
Been screwing bits together and playing with all the fiddly bits.
Head gasket goes on.

And then the head using these. New head bolts

These get pushed onto.

This.

Then put the thermostat housing on. I add a bit of liquid gasket to ensure a perfect seal.

With the new temp sendors..

In goes the thermostat and O-ring... Ensure the little arrow on the thermostat points up.
..
Then it was time to tackle my oil temp gauge.... I had find a pot to mount the temp sensor... I originally ordered a sensor that would replace the sump plug.
What better place to get the oil temp then out of the sump?
So I order the part VDO temp sensor m12x1.5.... However all the research I did was to no avail and it turns out the sump lug is infact just a plain m12 thread....
Do you think VDO make a sensor with that thread? Of course not... So I order the smallest sensor they have and start to modify the sump plug..

Drill a whole all the way though it like so.

Tap it at the other end and screw the small temp sensor into it like so.
..
Perfect, now I can gauge my oil temp.
Thats is for now as yet again I am awaiting parts.... Hope to have this bad boy finished within a month..

Cool idea - buy won't you have wiring at the lowest point of the engine now? Will that sender protrude enough to cause problems on speed bumps etc?
Maybe mounting on the side of the sump could be an idea too.
Engine looks damn tasty.

Ratch,
Yeah there will be one wire that will have to go all the way down to the sendor, I am going to have to come up with a way to keep it tucked out of the way. The sump plug is on the side of the sump but right at the bottom so it should be ok.

Really enjoying this project, fantastic work.
What injectors are those? I had mine ultra sonically cleaned but if anything they seem noisier than they were before to me. I've wondered about treating the old bus to new ones.
Cheers

They are a newer type injector but flow the same as the old ones @14.5psi which is important as you dont want to over fuel the engine, they also have four little spray holes rather then one... Being a newer type of injector im hoping bosch had made them operate a little quieter..
They are bosch injector part # 0280150937
Im told they help fuel consumption aswell as the fuel atomizes better giving a better burn.... Who knows for sure though?
They are available here:

Many thanks Mike I would love to rebuild an M20 with this attention detail, I recently completely refurbed my cylinder head with all new internals and a bit of a spicier cam. (264 Cat Cam). Highly recommended.
I covered around 350 miles this weekend in it and noticed that from around 2500rpm upwards cruising on the motorway all you can hear is a continual and annoying clicking sound from under the bonnet. I know this is typical of an M20 but i'm sure it is worse than it was before and all the internals to the head are new with the valve gaps set correctly.
The only other variable I could think of was the injectors as they have been cleaned out. The noise seems worse as the engine comes up to temp which would again point to valve clearences but i wondered if the injectors become noisier as the ECU leans out the mixture?

If you take the cap off your steering wheel and place a bit of bluetak on the steering shaft then stuff the rest with cotton wool this helps with the sound coming though into the cabin.... try that

Not convinced that the sump is the best place to take oil temperature,it's circulated the engine and is in the air stream at that point.
Think that I would follow convention and mount a sensor close to the oil filter or the pressure switch,or even the oil thermostat on an engine fitted with a cooler.
Perhaps use a sandwich plate between the oil filter and the block?

A big box arrived today containing all sorts of goodies

And it contained all this

First job was to screw down the inlet manifold using these.

On closer inspection you can see the nuts have all been squashed a little... Dont know why, probably to ensure a tight fit.

End result is this.

Then it was time to button up the front of the engine.. I hadnt done this yet because I was waiting on one tinny little thing, and I was not sure if I would have to pull everything off in order to change it...
The offending item was the timing belt tensioner spring.
With that all sorted it was time to do the dizzy

Timing cover on

Dizzy now complete

With all that done it leaves only a few little things left...
I am waiting on the following parts.
1 Big bore throttle body
2 Crank angle sensor
3 Suitable ECU chip
And then its ready to drop in.....
Thats is for now

Really have not done much to the car over the last couple of weeks as I am still waiting on parts....
ECU chip = next week I hope
BBTB = next week I hope
Crank angle sensor = Given up on Ripped off again
So I now have to get a new one of these from pelican parts plus I will buy a few more things to make the postage justifiable..
Anyway I got these..

I have to say what a improvement... I actually have a firm brake pedal for the first time since owning the car.... Thos old rubber hoses must of been on there since new..
For those that are interested I got them from here..

I think you will all agree a bargain!
Till the next riveting (boring update)
Thats it folks.

Ok so I am set to do the engine swap net weekend providing I get the remaining parts I need during the week.
All im waiting on is the ICV and crank position sensor...
Anyway I remembered that I better get cracking on the exhaust, so a quick visit to the exhaust shop and its booked in.
So all this is to be fitted on Monday

All ready for the engine on the weekend... Getting excited now..

So today the exhaust got done

Believe it or not its not that loud, at idle it sounds the same as before... Give it a bit of the right foot and it starts to sing but its a real nice noise thats not boomy or obnoxious at all..
I am very surprised as I was sure I was going to have to baffle it, when we turn the car on for the first time the exhaust guy looked at me and said... "well I didnt expect that"
I am very please with his work to say the least.

One way to get the love of your life back.
I may have to stop watching this thread as every time I see a pic of the underneath of your car my heart drops on two counts.
1. lack of rust and holes
2. lack of waxoil everywhere.
Have decided that my touring will get the full works over winter alas only underneath and all bits attached, and yes Mike you won't stop laughing when you see what I'm taking on.
Then again I still have my eye on a 325 touring that is straight.

Last weekend saw the engine swap being done, never attempted this job before and there was a few things that needed doing when the motor was out.
New clutch and pressure plate
New light weight flywheel
Slave cylinder
Replace all shifting mechanisms
Guibo
Anyway time for some pics
Before I could drop in the motor I had to add the BBTB to it... Here is a pic of the ETA throttle body Vs the BBTB... You can actually fit the ETA throttle body inside the BBTB.

Everything disconnected and the lifting begins... A big long seatbelt is the perfect tool for this.

Time for a clean up in here..

And this is what awaits... E30 sees its new heart.

Time for some sound deadening

And the lifting in begins... First have to mount the gearbox with the new clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, shifter mech, slave cylinder, guibo and new tranny fluid.

My mate couldnt help him self. Dickehead

And the end result motor in.

First turn of the key
Well it fired but wouldnt run.... hmmmm whats wrong here?
Some days later after heaps of testing and fault eliminating we ended up with this.
Big thanks to Mark a fellow Zoner who kindly offered his help and his E30 to help diagnose the problem... Turns out the old working Eta AFM is not compatible with the Motronic upgrade.. Swap out the AFM with a newer one from a facelift car and away you go...

No oil cooler, or were they not fitted on the tec1, certainly tec 2 325i's cars over here have them as standard , having experienced a summmer out in your neck of the woods I reckon one would do quite niceley.

The car isnt a tech1 so it did not have one standard... I will see how the oil temps go over the next couple of weeks.powelly wrote:No oil cooler, or were they not fitted on the tec1, certainly tec 2 325i's cars over here have them as standard , having experienced a summmer out in your neck of the woods I reckon one would do quite niceley.
All 325i's have oil coolers.
