So Si comes over Sunday and brings the C2 head with him. We knew it had been tickled but by how far??? So we started playing. And heres what we found:
1st up heres a STANDARD 2.5 head. note the combustion chamber shape

And heres the C2 head. Massive difference. The little man in the brown engineers coat in Buchloe has taken a considerable amount of meat away, note both sides if the valves. On the plug side they've smothed it out. the biggest differences are opposite.

And heres a scketch of how much meat has gone

NEXT up we have the ports. The inlets on the C2 have just been smoothed out. No enlargement of any kind. HOWEVER, check the exhausts.
Standard 2.5 with gasket to show comparison. Note how it's not perfect round. from top to bottom it measures 31mm and from side to side it measures 32mm. from the top left to the bottom right (it's widest point) it's 34mm.

Alpina has maxed out this widest point to a perfect 34mm all round. Not they've not perfectly matched it to the gasket but left plenty on there.

and heres an interesting point. The tiny steam escape holes between the chambers are threaded in the C2 but rough cast in mine. We wondered is there an underlying reason for this? But I reckon Si, you hit the nail on the head with the filling the water jacket with inert gas (or something?) when they weld the head to stop the build up of weld in the water jacket and so restricting flow. They would have to seal all escape route's

And there you have it. We finally know the head work on a C2

I've had very limited internet for the past 2 weeks but i'm sorted again
Also due to recent adverse weather conditions ive been busy/bored so i've spent an immense amount of time on the engine

Cleaning up the Racing Dynamics 6 Branch - this has taken f**king hours!

I've painted the mild steel flanges with some black high temp paint also

Inlet and rocker painted courtesy of Trevor B7 cheers bert. So inlet all built up, i had the injectors cleaned also

Black painted again black
but it's grey! it says with some proper heat it will cure and go black i hope so!

ready for some shells............

main end shells in the block

big end shells in the conrod caps

Shells all in now!

liberal coating of engine assembly lube

Crank in

big end caps on and 5NM application on the bolts

Main end caps on and torqued up along with the conrod bolts

front end stuff on water pump, brackets new seals in front cover

New rear crank seal and gasket on, i had to take the lump off the stand and strap it onto the crane for this as i couldn't torque the nuts up properly otherwise! pain but hey ho

Oil pump on, this was from PYF's second engine it's only covered 2000 miles. Plus that other shine silver thing can't remember it's proper name!

And finally sump on again, doesn't look much but it's taken a while. Most of it cleaning parts up i'm getting there. Shells where standard sized ones from BMW those plus the rod bolts best part of £300 with discount
should be good for another 150k i hope!
I've started on the head but i'll post that later!

Bloody hell si I was only jokeing, easy mistake, ive done worse!!
Looking good Si, seems like the lack of tinternet has done you good, all those hours hiding in the garage
I think I'll nip the crank out of mine since it's so handy at the mo, I've been thinking of a 2.8 build, but I don't think I've got the money at the mo, so it will just be a new set of shells and poss piston rings as she's a bit smokey!lol.
Keep up the good work

Ant, never thought of M21, but the part numbers of all the old shells were 325i ones mains and big ends, so thats what i've fitted
looking on real OEM the part numbers are different for M21 mains, i'm guessing they would be under more stress in a diesel due to much higher CR. The Td crank in a petrol lump won't be giving them as much grief no?

just checked real OEM again and part numbers for shells on the 324td,eta and 325i lumps all share the same part numbers for mains and big ends it looks
I looked at the 324d first time which lists different part no.s for it's shells

Cracking on with the fierce jobs at the moment, with the head away and awaiting a camshaft i can't do anymore on the engine so

This job is horrific. Getting the old 10mm bolt which holds the old T-piece on can be a total nightmare like today! Half the rear end needs to be removed also, ie fuel tank, prop, exhaust which are all sad jobs!
Front to rear brake pipe isn't funny either

The old fuel lines where pretty ripe and turns out an advisory on several old MOT's along with the brake lines. I've had these pipes and brackets a while for the 2 door but..........

Hartge rear bar on

Crap shot but the new fuel tank in also as the old one was well on the way round the seems and filler neck stub
All these bits came off PYF bar the fuel lines. Save me £££. Not much to see but it's these kind of things that 95% of E30's need doing now
