Evening all, just won a set of ACT alloys for the M3,

Jason i'd appreciate any heads up on the fabrication requirements for the bulkhead/glovebox problem,

Thanks for the heads up daimlerman!

I'm considering the storm single wiper conversion as its something that ACS offered with their e30 package,

Good idea? :D

I considered this for the touring, but decided to struggle on and make the stock set-up work properly,my aim was to make the conversion as un-noticable as possible, plus my wife veto'd a single wiper conversion!

Good Point there,

Must say that this is going to be mainly a summer car and rain will be avoided so far as possible,

With that in mind having the single wiper should be less of a problem,

At this stage (and i know i realy must get some pictures up) fabrication for the wipers against the single conversion makes far more sense,

Do you have any comparison pictures of the bare bulkheads LHD/RHD for comparison?

Note I have lowered the steering column by about half an inch, puts the wheel into a perfect spot to suit ME,mostly ay accident as I forgot to allow enough for the thickness of the carpet when I measured rim to floor in my other car! :o:

Very interesting Dude!

Any close ups of the bulkhead supporting the glovebox hinge?

I'm getting ready to rewrap the rhd loom with chloroplast, its going to be a real mission getting all that back in it the right place especially as aircon is added into the mix!

Though my greatest dread is directed at refitting the sunroof fixings, thats going to be a total arse!

For what it's worth, I think RHD is the way to go, at the end of the day what you are building is not a genuine M3 anyway so what does it matter where the steering wheel goes, if you're starting from a bare shell you are in the best place to do everything properly, issues like manifold etc in the greater scheme of things are irritations on a project of this scale. Having owned LHD cars I can honestly say it's not for me in this country, overtaking is a bit iffy and i'm sure with your plans there will be plenty of that, it's ok on the odd occasion but the novelty will wear off. I look forward to seeing this project completed.

Sorry,no!

I did not realise the problem until I was ready to mount the glovebox, the RHD one has an additional bracket to LHD,and it is in this area where the LHD bulkhead is a different shape,I think it's to do with allowing enough space for the pedals.

I currently have a spacer that is tapered behind the bracket, but the taper is not quite the right shape,it's one of those little jobs that I plan on getting around to now I am semi-retired!

The paint drain plug in the r/h footwell looks to be the right place for the base of the column, but it's not quite right, seem to remember it needed to be a touch higher and a bit to the right, but all these things do give you the chance to tailor the column to suit you and your exhaust manifold.
I thought :o: the job would be easy as the brake servo stays in the same place...RHD carpet should just drop in,though!

Well at least the carpet should be less of a hassle! lol!

Jason -do you have any pictures of the solution you came up with for comparison?

Definatly going to be asking Ian for his expertise with regard to getting the wiring and piping right for the aircon retrofit,

I've been inspired by Barry's 'Spec'tacular sport -get it? lol! Its just such a clean install...

The last thing i want to do right now is put something back together then have to pull it apart again 8O

I like many others would love to see some pics of the shell and the prep work you have been doing.

Personally I am with the group that sees no harm in your RHD conversion. You have taken a car/shell that has not been used in ages , been left to rot and you are bringing it back into use. It will still look like any other m3 and it is not like you have taken a concorse winning 38 mile m3 and done this. As a whole your saving a car and making something that not only you will enjoy but others too.

Thanks for the support :D , i suppose if it turns out to be a proven Schnitzer s3 id then i really will have blazing squad all over this thread!

Either way it was most likely going to rot to nothing if left in situ so i feel no remorse for the molestation thus far, people say it'll be worth nothing but the only depreciating expense is the paint work over a period of however many years.

Simply put, this is something i've always wanted to do and i believe i can achive my goals with this project to a very high standard, -besides the rack (most likely 1.9 ratio z3) and necessary s50 conversion parts its still an m3,

Guess i'll wait for that last statement to get flamed lol!

Hope to have some pictures this weekend :D

Your car, your cash, you do just as you want with it.

I have had two try's at building the 'perfect' E30 and still there is 'something' just not quite right....

Unfortunately my wife has banned me from further 'garage projects'....
I'll make her some hardwood bedside tables this winter as part of the 'softening up' process, meantime, good luck with your plans and keep us informed!

I have told Dan before about driving on the left and sitting on the right being the only way. He is in denial. 8)

'Innit' :D

Just getting started with stripping the aircon components down, do you have a part number for the gas conversion kit or do i have to order all of the seals individually?

Totally in awe of your aircon install dude!

r134a conversion kit does not include o-rings for every join, so you will need to get additional o-rings in the correct size.

Why thank you! :D

It was the bain of my life at one point though! :-x

The 134a conversion kit has about 4 O-rings and not enough for the whole system.

What you need to do is measure all the external diameter of the pipe joins and order the relevant seals.

:)

It's also worth noting that the various o-rings are sizes which are used in many other air conditioning systems, you can get them much cheaper from a local garage who do work on aircon.

Cheers! A question for you and Mr 13, how do i go about ordering a new set of locks, keys and caps for the alpinas?

I fell in love with these alloys as soon as i saw them and i think with the brake setup only 17"s will clear the calipers so it may put paid to the 16"ACT's. Im sure Jhonno can clarify...
