I would - how often do you get to do this level of strip and build?

First time mate... I just figure if I am going to do it, I will do it right.. I am told that the rusty waterway will not cause a problem whatsover but I know its there and that bothers me.. I am a bit anal

I sent the block away about a week ago to get one cylinder sleeved due to some rust in the bore, while it was there I had the clock honed and decked... They took 7 thou of the top of the block to clean it up..
Masked up and painted. Decided on flat red paint for the block with silver everything else... Saw it somewhere else and thought it looked real nice.

Good shot of the honing

Engine back

Engine front

Unmasked

Shiny and new looking

Bolting on some bits and bobs

More to come soon

Today was a exciting day. Something I have been looking forward too, as I started to assemble the bottom end and watch all the hard work come together.
The Brand new bearings have been put into the block, interestingly the ones that go on the block where a perfect fit but the ones that went on the caps had a extra key way slot on them, this meant they did not fit the caps. Lucky we where able to file them off giving a perfect fit.

Crank shaft laid in block

Piston rings on pistons

Sliding pistons into the bore

All pistons and bearing in, all torqued up with engine eying off its new home

New vs old oil pump

Oil pump in place

New Vs old oil pressure switch (looks different must check)

Spotless oil free sump (cant have any traces of old oil in here I want the oil to be like honey every change)

Sump placed in position to protect the inside of the motor from dust. Looks a bit dirty on the bottom and I dont like the scratches... Cant have that. Fix it on Monday

Monday I have to place the front and back engine plates on, aswell as button up the sump.

Thanks Ade,
Had a few issues with the piston rings as they are 7 pieces per piston.. The oil scraper ring has a expander a bottom ring then a zigzag ring then a top ring (4 in total), the middle ring has a expander then the ring (2 in total), but the top ring is a single conventional ring.. So many rings made it tricky compressing them into the bore and I twisted one skinny ring on the oil scrapper set... Took ages to straiten it so it would go back in the groove.

So for a while now my comfort seats have been on the way out especially the drivers one. So a mate of mine with a 318is decided to sell up and he said I could have his leather recaro interior as he wont be needing it anymore.. Its not in the best condition but it is a step up on the comforts and will do until I find something better or a retrim..
Day started of like this.

1 hour later we had this.

Went from this.

To this in around 2.5 hours

370mm tech 2 wheel aswell but I will probably sell this as my car is a facelift

You really sit so much lower in the recaros and even though they are worn they are heaps more supportive..
Paid the right price for them to..... FREE FREE FREE.
Now all I have to do is dye my spare carpet to black so there is not so much miss match of colours in there.
Not bad for a few hours work.

Mike, if that is a 370mm wheel, let me know how much you want for it. Perhaps a part swap for the valve springs and money from me to you?
The seats look great, though I suspect that they are sports seats, not Recaros. I wouldn't worry about it, though, as you're still in for a treat given that they are far superior to the comfort seats. Give 'em a clean and a feed and see how much better they come up.

Ade its not in the best condition mate it does need a retrim but its yours if you want it my friend.
Hahaha I dint know there was a difference in sport seats and recaros thought they where the same, so what is the differences?

Todays events saw me changing the big oil seals 3 in total and installing the welsh or freeze plugs depending which part of the world you are from..

Bottom end gasket set with unknown seals. Not sure about the O-rings, egg shaped gasket and the crush washers.

Installing the Welsh lugs, with a smear of liquid gasket to make sure the buggers dont leak ever.

Thats all for today

Got a little bit done today, I managed to get the timing case/plate thing on that carries the two oil seals at the front. I also got the one on the back over the crank.
These were tricky
Also got the sump on and I use the proper gasket along with a liquide gasket to make sure it seals, I do it on all gaskets.

Went to bolt the water pump on but thought I better check it against the old one.

The bugger is different and all the way from the USA its going to wast alot of time and probably difficult to get a refund as I bought it months ago,
So modification is in order, I will make up a T piece adaptor out of stainless (pics to come)

Pretty much finished the bottom end now, just a few bits and bobs left. However it is a little strain on the memory since I stripped the motor down 2-3 months ago. Only one or two bits have had me scratching my head.

Now I am just waiting on a few parts that I have ordered for the cylinder head to arrive and then I can get cracking on the top half.

don't use the VRS head gasket they are cheap shite, use a factory one or from Goetze you can visually see the superior quality.
Didn't want to use B25 pistons to match the 885 head and build a high CR B27/B28? Decking the block in conjunction with vernier cam gear would not have been too difficult or costly.

Reggid,
Not using the VRS head gasket I will be using the Elring gasket set for the top part of the motor... I have read VRS has a bad rep when it comes to their head gasket.... Apparently their bottom end set is good though..
As far as the 325 pistons the cost is what turned me off, I would have to get a set of pistons then machine down the skirts to clear the crank... So I am afraid the cot out weighed the gains for just a few compression points.. Anyway looks like I may be using a ported out 731 head so I still will have good compression...

Bert the water pump pulley is on the wrong way round! also when refitting the engine i'd drop the PAS pump off as it catches on everything when craning back in.
Coming on nicely isn't it

Got some new bits today..
VDO oil pressure gauge and hose..
And a box of parts... clutch master and slave. guilbo, another oil filter . The bag contains center oil line, valve guides, flywheel bolts, clutch alignment tool, throw out bearing, oil return washer and a big O-ring...

Todays update is....
T piece to go in place of original oil pressure switch, this lets me run a oil pressure gauge aswell as retain the oil pressure light (idiot light) in the instrument cluster

Double valve springs have arrived, thanks Ade.

And I went to the cylinder head shop to see how the machining is going on my head. He has given it a quick clean (not finished) and welded up that crater that was in the combustion chamber.

He has to weld up the porosity in the weld.. Happens when welding up alloy that has had oil on it.. The oil causes porosity in the weld..

Cylinder head should be finished mid way through next week. Now I have to wait on people to send the rest of the parts.

Little bit of a update.... Not much really just a mix of things that needed doing while I still await my other stuff to arrive..
Mounted my oil pressure switch along with the T-Piece for the oil pressure gauge.

Then it was time to find a position for the oil pressure gauge. I didnt want it in the vents as I like my A/C in summer. I did not want to cut any holes in the car either. So the only thing I dont use in the car is the ashtray... Smoking kills

Not sure I am happy with end result.... The vinyl does not match the vinyl.

Fabbed up a T-Piece so I can use the wrong water pump that got sent..

Painted some parts

Set the oil return tube for the head with new o-rings.

And I recieved my head today from the shop.... Double springs fitted, supplied by Ade

..

Looking badical.
I'm sure I've seen a proper black plastic gauge mount for the same position on sale - but it has 3 gauge holes.

Thanks for all the positive comments guys.
Todays little update.. Rockers.
I sent a set off to be cleaned and this is the difference.

I ordered some of these and since I am running out of things to do while I wait for the inlet manifold and T/B, I thought I might fit them up...
Rocker eccentrics

New eccentric Vs old eccentric..... Cant see the difference except the oil I hear you say? Yeah me either.

12 refurbished rockers ready to roll.
