I've just read your whole thread, that's the sort of project I'd like to do one day.

I'll just have to wait until I've built myself a house with a decent garage.

Just thought I'd revive my thread and do a little update. :D

Over the past wee while I've been mainly buying parts for the engine to get re-built and been cleaning things up, and tonight I should be receiving my parts order from BMW. My step dad Colin works for the Eastern Western group and has managed to get me some discount on the parts I've ordered, although they still came in at around £550 8O Was a bit shocked when I found that out!.lol.

Anyway, I've sent the Crank and crank pulley away to Engine Services in Rosewell for a new spigot bearing to be fitted and for two bolts that sheared off in the lower pulley to be removed. So I should get those back later today. Also the rocker cover is all finished and ready to go, just the inlet manifold to laqure up, block's painted, pistons cleaned, so once I get all the parts It'll be time to get the thing built up, can't wait.

I'll post up some pics tonight, before we get underway.....

:D

BMW Dealer Parts....

Image
Image
Image
Guide shells...
Image
New Piston rings...
Image

So it was all new Hoses, new seals, Head gasket, o-rings, new con rod bolts, shells, HT lead cover and various other gaskets.

Then we get to the oil pump. I noticed that Trev( B7) had rebuilt his oil pump rather than buying a new one, so thought I'd have a bash at it myself.
The bottom of the oil pump was heavily scored, so as Trevor did I attempted to cut it back with the wet and dry to get it smooth again, and this was the outcome...

Image

Not bad considering its original state, I used a mirror that had quite thick glass and some 1500 wet and dry.
Now onto the bits I ordered for the oil pump. I forgot that if a dealer wont sell these parts they'll make you buy the whole bag....
So I ended up with 25 plastic rings for either end of the oil pump drive...
Image

10 springs and 5 strainers.lol....
Image

And 50 washers for at the end of the spring....
Image

So if anyone wants any or need any let me know....

Getting there.....
Paul.

Right another update. After the fiasco of figuring out if I had the right crank main bearing shells(cheers Simon and Chris), of which It turned out I did, I thought I"d better start building it back up. Since I had all of the right parts for the engine, at about 780 odd quids worth and thats with discount from the stealers, and a lot of parts from Toby at New Car Parts Ltd( or Parts Auction) who was great, with quick delivery and greats service as usual. The rest of the parts I got from Euro car parts.

First off, get the crank in with those new shells
Image
Image

The new shells in the caps...
Image
Image
Image

Next up, pistons, all cleaned up and with new rings, shells and bolts....
Image
Image
Image
Image

Pistons in and caps all torqued up, strange things them stretch bolts, just don't feel nice!!
Image
Image
Image

then the front and rear oil seal casings, and front crank pully and bolt....
Image
Image

then the Oil pump and thingy next to it....
Image

then time for the sump...
Image

And last for tonight, the water pump and tensiorer. I decided to usse my old water pump as it had not long been put on the car and still feels very smoth
Image
Image

So there we have it, next up is to finish off cleaning up the head and face of the block and get the head on. Just got to finish laquring the inlet manifold and we're done :D

Never noticed this before, top effort. Should be good when done.
When i did mine i changed the core plugs because the water jacket was rotten. It still turns the coolant brown now.
I managed to push a screwdriver through some of them by hand they were that thin, they looked ok from the outside but were knakered inside.
May be worth checking before the head goes back on.
There is NO nucleus.

Just a wee update...

Finished my rocker cover and inlet manifold.....

Image
Image
Image

Came out nicely

Also realised that the valves weren't seated right, so I've got them out and re-lapping them....

Image
Image

Inlets are done, just the exhausts to go, so thats where I'm off to just now, should be finished and back together tonight.

Also got this from Spadge ( cheers mate :D) winkeye

Image
Image

Had a wee go with some wire wool and some metal polish and it should come up nicely...
Image

And before anyone starts going on about "you should have bought a BTB2", I didn't buy it for the performance, just the looks!! :D

Yup, still alive :D

Been keeping a low profile while the exams were on, but that's them finished now.

Got 95% of the stuff required for the swap I reckon. Just missing the clutch res/pipework and a facelift ecu - nothing that a trip to the scrappies can't sort out!

Last night Neil and I went up to do a bit more to the engine....

First was to finish off building the head up, get the rocker shafts and rockers back in....

Image

then was to give the head and block a final clean up before putting the head back on the block...

Image

Image

Head gasket on....

Image

Head on ready to torque down....

Image

torqued down and at TDC ready for the timing belt....

Image

And after the troubles Trevor is having at the mo, here's my rocker shaft retaining plate, in place...

Image

Belt fitted and turns over nicely....

Image

Image

Once the valve clearances were reset and oil spray bar in place, it was time to put the nicely painted rocker cover on....

Image

Image

Then I couldn't resist mocking it up with the 6-branch and inlet....:D

Image
Image
Image

One of Neil being daft...

Image

Getting there.... winkeye

Cheers guys,

just noticed I haven't put up any photos of the completed engine, just the wiring loom to be attached now...

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Also the gearbox has been cleaned up...
Image

linkage dismantled, cleaned, re-greased and rebuilt...
Image

I've got the input seal off at the mo, it's been replaced and is awaiting refittal...
Image

the output seal also is to be replaced but it's a strange size bolt holding the flange for the prop on, something like a 28mm, so I'll have to speak to the guys next door and get that done.
Image

After that I need to fill the gearbox up with new oil, fit the flywheel and new clutch, replace the prop center bearing and it's ready to go into the 316 for running in!:D:D

vroom vroom!!ImageImage
