Sim

If you after a cheap motor and running gear let me know? Have a 320ise complete for reasonable money.
Regards

Clyde

thanks for the offer but I've been given a 325 engine with all the extras needed so (until it breaks) I'm set.

Once it gets through the mot in a couple of months I will source a low mileage (lower than 177k anyway) 2.5 or possibly a 2.8 from the older 5 series. But this one will do for now.

A small update, some good and bad news...

Good news - the grill looks good, but will look better when I get round to buying a can of diamantschwartz instead of just using an old tin of matt black.
Image
Bad news - the lights look really bad, too brown and to get them to look dark enough would be even more illegal. So the tint will be gone as soon as I can be bothered. I like the smoked lights idea, but home tint doesnt cut it (shock horror, a free bodge job doesnt look good!! ).

I'm tempted to do them yellow, european style, or smoke them as per a guide somewhere on here by spraying reflectors and putting a thingy in.

Or if anyone knows of any pre smoked ones they might do...

Looks

Shame about the front tint's - there's a guide on here somewhere about how to do proper ones - think you spray the reflectors or something!!

Simian, lights look shite but just get a set of x hairs and do them properly.
I did my set in about 3 hours start to finish, just make sure you get a spare bag of patience, youll need it!
Worth doing though and will suit your car down to the ground :)

Regards the grill, ive just used Matt Black on mine but i sprayed the outer grills too so it all matched colour shade.

PS Bazman on here made loads of the xhairs up at work, maybe worth giving him a nudge?
He is in Plymouth too winkeye

ideal, will drop him a pm and see if he has any left. I read the guide and it all looks pretty simple, was just going the lazy route to see if it worked... It didnt.

I was going to spray the grill but the rings around the lights and the kidneys took all of my half empty can from the shed. Its on the list though.

Still like the idea of doing the kidney in the body colour but the rest could do with the paint anyway, its a bit faded and old.

As far as i remember Barry saying he made about 50 of these xhairs!
Apparently he sent a set to someone off here and they said they didnt fit but the design Barry used to cut his out from was the original template that i used to make mine plus 2 other sets, all turned out ok!

Total cost to do mine was £1.29 for tin of Satin Black from Trago and tube of Black all weather sealent from B&Q that cost about £3.79.

Not sure if I'm mad about the blacked out grille - might look better with diamondschwartz!

I liked the fact that the front end was a little different from the rest :)

yeah I know what you mean, I do like them with the chrome grill but blacked out seems to be a developing theme with this car so thought it suited.

I think with it sprayed the body colour on a matt black grill it will stand out a bit still. Maybe on my next e30 (me, caught the bug...never!) i'll leave it...

I have been reliably informed by mr bazman that as he was told they dont fit he wont sell them :?

Does anyone have the template?

To be honest though, 10 mins with a dremel and some alloy sheet and i reckon i can come up with something that will work. the principle is sound, just need to find the right shape.

Bare with me mate and ill get you the template!
I originally got it off R3Vlimited but tryed searching their for it with no success.
Had a PM of another member ob their and he said he has it and hell email it to me.
Also Benjy has got it on his computer too, just waiting for him to send it through too then ill pass it on!

Just to note - The ones Bazman has are cut out from the same template i did mine with, only thing i did that seems to differ from others is cut the little locating tabs of and glued them in place instead.I used a hot glue gun to do this and they are still secure now!
Some may think its a bodge but to be honest they are a tight fit once the lense is in place so doubt they would move anyway.

Soon as i get it so will you

many thanks Eko for sending me the template. I will knock some up and make them fit my lenses, then make up a few more for people that want them.

They wont cost more than a couple of pounds (if that) in materials so anyone that fancies a set, pm me and come to the dartmoor meet. I'll have them on me then to dish out.

ps, I picked up my free tech2 front bumper today, needs a spot of fibreglass to make it tip top but i will be working on that over the next week or so... will post pics of the work.

Now all I need is free rear bumper, and free side detail..... anyone? lol

Mean looking tourer mate, im not usually a fan of dark rims on a dark motor but tastes vary, im doing black lights on mine too. eyebrow spoilers are a cheap mod at around £15 and give it a mean look at the front without over doing it ! bet she loves speedbumps.

tim-ix wrote:Wow, when are you tinting the windows Sim? Very Happy

Will you try to get away with silver-on-white numberplates to go fully monochrome? Have you smoked the rear lights yet?

I checked out the trampdrift site - funny as **** the stuff you lot get up to. Almost tempted me to buy another old Sierra, it's a good while since I had an RWD car.

hehe, the windows will be getting an all round light smoke as soon as I have a few spare pennies, hopefully by summer but I have more pressing issues like getting a working engine into it and running. I dropped in a 325 but it was fooked so I now have another to put in this weekend.

Then I need some decent suspension, a stereo (not a huge one, just something that plays bloody cd's, my early 90's tape collection is getting a bit tiresome), a welded diff and some wheel spacers.... then the tints lol.

Rear lights were smoked when i did the indicators/repeaters. I have a set of silver on black plates on order but I dont think they'll see much action apart from shows etc, cant be bothered with the grief, plymouth police are bored and enjoy hassling modified cars.

TD is a cool little site, much better than all these rich kids in s13's on driftworks. I cant actually 'drift' as such just yet, but I'm a quick learner and have my first official practice day this month so watch this space... D1 in a 325 here we come... lol.

rik- speedbumps are fine, they were a mare with the 316 in it cos it has a mahoooosive sump but the 325 buys me another inch or two clearance and it gets over them just fine... slowly, but fine.

sanchez - no handbrakes were harmed in the making of my sig.

101bhp and 1600cc's of bmw power (on gravel) were used to get the 'drift'. My cameraman was told to take the picture as soon as I hit opposite lock. At which point I stomped on the brakes to avoid a f*cking huge pothole! If you look close you can see dust being kicked up from the base of the rear wheel, proof it was spinning not locked with the brake.

(sorry, had this discussion on another forum)

Ahh, its just occured to me that you probably mean when it was parked on the slipway.... if this is the case, ignore that rant. I didnt trust the handbrake to hold the car so left it in reverse too lol. The tide was coming in real quick that day, when we parked it was under the bumper, by the time we got back in it was halfway up it.

Ric - The engine swap will be being repeated this weekend, the last engine was a dud. I will be sure to post up more pics of me standing around watching other people make my car work.

I am building up an extensive collection of knackered bmw engines in my back garden, the wife is delighted.

Like your thinking, the same as mine apart from the suspension, i raised mine from 60/40 to 35 all round (daily driver and a low m20) i did my wheels diamond black and the grill, doing the light smoke probs the weekend, as for the rear, side and front lights, i did mine out of the can and i think they came out ok, and maybe still this side of legal, well they still produce light

havn't got pics of the side and front's but there just as dark

Looks like you went for three coats of tint on those rears, I stopped at 2. But, seeing how much light yours let through I may take them off and slap some more on. 8)

Looks good, would be interested to see your grill. I want to do mine in diamond black instead of just black but couldnt find any diamond in a can. :(

The free mtech bumper was a cheap fibre glas replica. i smoothed the fog light holes, but when it came to sanding it down ready for paint, it turned out to be battered, loads of hairline cracks etc.

I gave it to a friend with more patience than me in exchange for the loan of his car for a day to go get my new engine.

Ok she's dirty but the pics anyway,

I photochoped my wheels before i colour coded and decided against just straight black, but looking at yours, i may of changed my mind, yours look great on your touring
Image

Can't really tell but the kidney grill is colour coded from the pic (just the bit that used to be chrome, not the slates)

As i said light smoke the weekend, and cheapo smoked hellas soon, also this summer hopefully 2.8 out of a e36

+ have you sorted the camber out, your rear wheel camber don't look to bad in those pics

Looks good. I was tempted to do my wheels in the body colour but thought it may be a bit too much. I'm happy with the black, its satin finish so not too shiny, think high gloss would have looked a bit off. The story goes; They were on a mates MGZR and were silver, he kerbed them lots. When it came to sell them he got me to refurb them for him in black. Then never got round to selling them, 3 months later I got this and realised they would fit (offset is a bit out though, I need spacers) so bought them off him very very cheap cos he needed room..... what goes around comes around lol.

Definitely like your colour coded grill though. I've found a place that mixes paint into cans so will be doing mine soon. The window tints are a way off yet though, need to get the fecking thing running first.

I'll get some pics at the weekend of the grill in matt black, I sprayed the slats and light surrounds too to stop them looking so faded. v happy with the results but I want the grill to stand out a bit more.

You should tint your fogs too, though that might defeat the point of having them a tad.

I havent done anything to the camber, was expecting it to be way out but when it dropped it doesnt appear to have gone too far out at all.

Oh and smoke the lights e30zone style ;) I did after my poor effort at spray tinting them, it looks spot on. 8)

just red up again, whats the pdf for, crosshairs on the inside of the light lenses?
i've done cheap window tint before and the best way is with the window out, can get it mint, just a b4stard gettin it back in again afterward but the result is the b0llox, when you get there

And result on the camber, mines shite, wore out a set of 16's in 2weeks (well just the inner edge) might do a stop of cut n shut on the trailing arms

yep thats the one, I had to adapt them to fit in mine, not sure if I printed it out too big or its designed for different lights. But wasnt too hard to do.

My only advice is not to use no more nails to seal them, lol! It lets out vapour as it dries and they steam up :x :o:

erm well I followed the guide to the word, the words where it says use plastic or metal... I used plastic... I havent had a chance to find out if it will melt yet though :?

I'd recommend using some thin alloy.

The pdf is hosted, theres a thread about it somewhere..... If you pm me your email address I can send it to you though.

I'm in two minds about angel eyes... I know I DONT like the crappy ccfl ones, but there are some better looking ones on egay at the moment, using leds and a proper element... But I still cant decide if they suit e30's or not. I hate them on non bmw's, and firmly believe(d) that they should only be used on the cars that came with them, much like lexarse lights and lambo doors..... BUT, I dunno... I think I quite fancy a set on mine... Its a moral dilemma for me...

I found it, is that all it is, i'll be using the old ones and just spraying it up, i thought it was some sort of grid that sprayed on to the lense for some reason

edit i have to make them extra, didn't know that
