What do you set the inlets to ? :)

12 thou inlet and exhaust cold works best. Setting tappets on a bench is a waste of time. Tight tappets cause all sorts of running issues.
Followed Pacer and Andy's advice for this job that I was dreading tonight.

Only ever done this once before on the bronze turd and afterwards I couldn't notice any difference.
However today I thought I'd have a crack at it.
Set them both to 12 thou stone cold as advised and what a difference !
It now idles perfectly
They all seemed very tight but having now adjusted them following the guide in the wiki it is super smooth, no drop off in power at all and most importantly the atrocious lumpy idle is no more

As per usual though I did manage to make one balls up  and managed to round off number 3 spark plug. Got all the others out ok. Any tips to get it out ? A better quality plug spanner might do it but if not is it likely to come out easier with the engine warm ?

The other 5 plugs all looked good.

Valve clearances dude. All you need is a set of feeler gauges and a 10mm spanner. Decent guide in the wiki for how to do it but as per andyboy and pacer I set them a little wider than the book says which has worked wonders as it now idles smoothly and the top end is still pretty quiet.

Unfortunately I've also fooooked number 3 spark plug which isn't a problem right now as the plugs have only done a few hundred miles but will be a problem when it's time to change them :x

Wow not updated this for a while

The turd is back on the road for the summer, ive used it for work the last 2 days which was great fun.
It is fast in an oldskool kind of way. What i like most about it is in modern cars it doesnt seem to matter how much you press the throttle thy respond when they feel like it. In the E30 on say 2/3 throttle its quick and then when you floor it it resonds instantly. I need to use it more

I sorted a couple of long standing niggles a few weeks ago - fuel pump wiring and replaced the speedo sensor wiring and plug.

It might need a CV boot for the MOT in July but nothing else - the list is still long though.

I will post some new pics the next nice day i use it :D

Thread revival. Long time no visit Zoners.
Still got this car - its very dusty and ran out of MOT last summer BUT its been garaged and was OK when it was put away so I’m hoping some minor recommissioning will see it back on the road shortly.
New pics soon :D
