Lucky basterd!! :D They cleaned up fantasticly well. Think it's one of the most chic hountstooth interiors. Just shame they get dirty so quickly. I've got a set of tan coloured seat covers to prevent that if you're intrested. Without it my seats would have been nackered by now.

So the engine is finally ready to fit. The final stage takes longer then expected. Fiddly bits like Fabricating brackets for the fuel rail, dipstick and breather etc.

Here she is
Image
Image

And thanks again for help from Ollie. Here he is cleaning surface and fitting studs ready for Danthe manifolds winkeye

Image

Also made the most of the sun. Got the gearbox all cleaned up and fitted new selector seal and output shaft seal

Image

I also cleaned up my 323 flywheel ready to fit. Had a issue with the clutch kit though. As per the e30zone wiki guide I orderd a m20 clutch kit however the shaft is different on the e36 box so need to order m52 clutch kit. Presume I need to use the m52 release bearing also but I'll have to weld some spaces on to account for the smaller flywheel? Anybody shed some light?

Next 3 weeks are going to be mega busy and all being well... Car will be resprayed and engine will be in and running

The gearbox input shafts are all the same until you get to E46 6 speeds, no reason why you cant fit an M20 clutch

Hmmm. I wonder if the wrong clutch has been supplied then. It physically will not fit on the shaft. I'll check the part numbers on monday

Had to nip into work so just had another look at this clutch.

When I ordered a Sachs clutch from ECP they sent a luk one. So i called up and they sent me a Sachs one (same ECP part number)

I haven't returned the LUK one yet so just tried that one and it fits. I checked it against the Sachs and it is different. I suspect the Sachs one has been incorrectly labeled. I'll get it swapped tomorrow

There lies your problem :)

Dont take any notice of ECP part numbers as they are useless to anybody with even half a brain, this is why the phone monkeys cant cope. Use the Sachs or BMW numbers which should be listed in the wiki

BTW do not fit an LUK cover, they are not up to the torque of the 2.8, the centre will be fine though if you need to use a combo

I'll get it swapped for the correct Sachs kit and send the LUK back. We spend a LOT with them so they are pretty helpful normally

Small update;

As I am using a m20 flywheel instead of the original dual mass. You either need a e21 323 release bearing or modify the original. I didn't like either ideas....

E21 bearing hard to come by and expensive from BMW.
I don't intend to have to change the clutch again but if I do I don't want to have to weld the bearing every time.

So my solution. Using 2 forks I added 5mm to the height. Took lots of measuring and re measuring to get it perfect...

Pleased with the results :D

Gearbox is now fitted with new seals. New slave cylinder. New prop coupling. New mounts

Plus new z3m selector and new bushes... Feels really nice and sharp

Image

And finally...

My manifold arrived from Dan. I have seen photos of these and heard they are good quality. However after seeing them in person I have realised the photos do no justice. These manifolds literally are a work of art. I was going to do the manifolds myself but would of taken hours(which I don't have). I am so glad I got Dan to do them. I would not be able to get them close to the job he is done. Cheers Dan

Tomorrow my car is getting moved to my work ready for engine coming out on Monday.

It's looking pretty mint now :D

All painted and looking awesome. Few small bits to finish like the sills to stone chip black etc and still needs polishing. But finish straight from the gun is mint. One happy man.

Dropped the engine in today...

Fired it up briefly. Got a few issues to sort out tomorrow. Z3m shifter hits the prop :(

Alloy rad doesn't fit with the facelift mounts I purchased so will fabricate something. Also 318ti fan switch is too small to fit the boss on the rad.

Slowly making some progress though

Had it running longer today and runs sweet. Can't drive it yet though as clutch master cylinder that came with the manual pedal boxed leaks :(

Modified the gearbox extender mount to allow z3m shifter to clear prop. Not touching not but hardly any clearance so will have to try it on the road.

Image

Made some power steering pipes and a cooler. Need to make some mounting brackets. Copper cable tied at the min

Image

Alloy rad and cheap fan fitted (will change fan at later date)

Image

Image

Still got a few issues to resolve such as Rev counter isn't working! And clutch master cylinder leaks!
