Hey there,

Have just introduced myself here : http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... c&t=206297
So I guess an introduction of my E30 is up next... :)

A bit more than 2 years ago I felt the need for an E30 again - hadn't owned one since I rather unfortunately managed to park my super-clean 320i Touring under a truck back in 2005! :o:
But finding a nice E30 proved more than just a little difficult - most were rusty and bodged. But being persistent I got lucky and finally found a 2-door 325e from 07/85 (only second month of eta production!!) with just one previous owner and km 167.000 on the clock (that's about 104.000 miles). The car is Karminrot with Pearlbeige cloth interior and has a few rather tasty factory-supplied options, such as sports seats, M-Tech I steering wheel, original steel sunroof, green tint windows and servo-assisted steering. But best of all the body was amazingly rustfree and had never been welded!! The elderly man who had owned it had unfortunately given it a few small dings in the front wings and also a big soft one in the rear, so the rear bumper was bent, but there's just absolutely NO rust and it was also still wearing its original factory paint on every panel!! Nice.
With the odd little ding and sorry looking steel wheels, this is what it looked like when I picked it up...

Image

Image

First of all I treated the old girl to a major service incl. all fluids, filters, ignition parts, belts, water pump, thermostat, visco, rear exhaust, 4 x brake discs and pads, 6 x brake hoses etc etc... and obviously a fresh TÃaV (German MOT). Now the ol' eta was ready to cruise again, and the more exciting projects could be taken on as I found the money and time...

First off I decided to rectify the few faults that the body had. Though I wanted to keep as much of the original paint as possible, there was just nothing I could do when it came to the front wings and rear panel. The wings just had too many small dings and scratches, and the rear panel was bent quite a bit (even if it was a soft ding). So these 3 areas were resprayed and a very tidy s/h rear bumper was fitted. I should add that I'm well happy about still having the original front wings on the car - as I'm sure you lot know, E30's are notorious for rusting just behind the front wheels. A bit of a novelty having an E30 with original front wings... winkeye
With a set of original 6x14" Bottlecaps I quickly had her looking like this:

Image

Image

This was how my eta looked until spring 2010 where the next round of projects were taken on.
Will add more to the post later... :thumb:

I think i love you, your attitude and your car.

There is always something special when someone wants to preserve an E30 rather than just stick on the usual plastic bumpers.

Im looking forward to seeing it when ur done.

Cheers guys! :)
Glad you're liking it. Kolee, doubt I'll ever finish it though!! I always seem to find something new that I want to improve...

Anyway, second installment of my eta post:

Shortly after getting the E30 roadworthy again, I managed to find a 25% LSD with the correct 2.79 : 1 gearing that the 1st gen. eta has (already for the 2nd gen. from 09/85 they got a slightly lower gearing 2.93 : 1). One could argue that with 122hp @ 4250rpm I probably don't really need a LSD, but I'm just a real sucker for those things, and I justify it to myself by those 10 days a year that I will be driving in snow... :screwy:

In the spring of 2010 I treated the eta to a set of new Eibach springs which lower approx. 30mm and a set of Bilsteins to match. At the same time I renewed the top-mounts and the main rear subframe mounts with new OEM rubber.

Image

Obviously I wanted some sportier alloys for the E30 too, and I must say I was extremely lucky to come across what is most likely the last brand new set of 7x15" BBS RA215's. As a bonus they're even stamped with '85' as year of production, so couldn't possibly be any better for my '85 eta!! It was quite a treat unpacking the 25 year old BBS's from their original packaging...

And no, I'm not going to apologize for the following wheel-porn!!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Next up was a bit of spoilerage to go with the lower stance and the retrocool BBS's. But don't worry, being a OEM-guy I wasn't about to go all Fast & Furious on my lovely eta...
I considered an original M-Tech 1 kit quite seriously - they look awesome imo, but dare I say they are a bit common nowadays. I also wanted to highlight the fact that my E30 is a 1st gen. (upto 09/85), so I didn't want to cover the early lower front panel with a spoiler, as this is really the only visual difference from the outside between 1st and 2nd gen.
So instead I managed to track down an original early BMW Motorsport frontspoiler specific to the 1st gen. Love the look of this spoiler!! 8) It really compliments the sharp E30 lines and blends in nicely with the front wheel arch...
To match the bespoilered look up front I bought an original small rubber spoiler for the rear - these are actually still available brand new from BMW!!

This was the result:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

I feel I've managed to strike that early 80's retro-look quite well, but there are of course still more minor improvements on the to-do-list.

As perfection lies in the details, I've also spent some time renewing much of the outside plastic trim which had gone white with time, fitting new chrome inserts in the front and rear window rubber, and also treating the eta to new BMW emblems front and rear and a new 325e badge on the rear.

More wheel-porn... :P

thats a very nice e30 you have there! and you were lucky to get them bbs's! if you dont mind me asking? how much did they set you back?

id say a set of bronze/delour windows would look good with the bbs alloys/colour and would really set her off as they were a very 80's thing!(mainly fitted to 85/86 cars) but it would be alot of messing changing the windows!

im going with the same theme with moddifiactions im doing it as it would be done in the 80s! by fitting period parts!

Thanx for the kind words!! :o:

@ Magpie, sorry no build thread... There really wouldn't be much to it either to be honest. The eta was actually really tidy when I got it, so while there have been several minor projects, it would hardly be enough to justify an actual build thread...

And sorry again - no M50 for me... Like I said, I'm very much a OEM-guy, and this E30 also seems too original, straight and unmolested to start a major mod. Besides, I've got another BMW for tracktime and sideways action...!! :P

@ Madmax, I couldn't possibly agree more regarding the bronze windows!! Would love a set... There was actually a complete set on German ebay a while back, but they went for a bit north of € 750!! 8O I don't know, perhaps fair enough considering how rare they are, but was just a bit more than I felt like investing at the time...
Btw. do you have a thread on your E30?? Sounds like my kind of E30 if you're keeping it period. 8)

unfortunatly mine is a 89 facelift but registered in 1990 :( its a 316 lux with a 325i engine fitted! im also going to fit orignal euro yellow tint headlights if i can get a set!

i have a set of opel manta gte recaros to go into it and hopefully ill pick up a nice set of revolution rfx wheels for it! all parts mentioned are pre 1990 except revolution wheels have started making the rfx again!

Thanx for the link Madmax! Looking forward to following your build - I'm sure it'll end up awesome... 8)

So time for my third installment in my eta post.

First I spent a fortune on getting the eta technically as-new, by changing a load of service parts from rubber bushings to brakes, steering parts, clutch, bearings, exhaust etc etc...
Then I focused on the exterior and got the eta pretty much as I wanted it.
Next up was the interior.

I started by giving everything a really good clean as it was quite filthy!!
Then took much of the dash apart so I could change ALL the little bulbs in there (incl. the those behind the heater and the light switch), so I can enjoy that cosy red BMW-glow when driving at night... 8)
Oh yeah, and though it's not really in keeping to my keep-everything-original-and-period-theme, I also swapped the original digital clock with a brand new later-style analog clock. These weren't available in '85, but just look so much better!!

Image

When I bought the eta it had the regular boring plastic gear knob which just doesn't cut it!! Had to have one in leather and obviously I needed it to be the period correct round gear knob rather than the later oval ones. Got lucky on German ebay and found one in good condition, which was even the cool type where the knob and sleeve are in one - bonus...!! :D
Gave both gear knob and the M-Tech 1 steering wheel a good clean and conditioning with Leather Liquid.

Image

Next up was the stereo. I'm not one for massive ICE, but the mid 80's cassette deck had to go. Wanted a CD-player, but I also wanted it to look fairly authentic and it just had to have the red light in!! I hate it when a blue or green light from the stereo spoils the beautiful red BMW-glow...
So the choice was easy really - the last of the BMW Business CD systems as fitted to the final E36's and Z3's.

Image

To go with that I found a complete set of E30 Soundsystem speakers, but swapped the old units with new ones from Audio System. Nothing OTT, but it keeps everything looking original, yet sounds much more crisp than with the old units form the Soundsystem.

Image

Image

Image

Finally I treated the eta to new floormats in Perlbeige. Not the most practical colour for floormats I know, but just looks sooo damned good!! :thumb:

Image

All in all a really nice place to be!! Takes me back to the mid 80's when I was a kid riding with my dad in his new Burgundrot BMW 323i... :D

Image

Still a few more projects that I want to finish on the interior though. There's some wear to my drivers seat which is really letting the overall appeal of the eta down. It's driving me mad and a solution must be found soon!!
I also want to find a leather handbrake handle with leather sleeve, and rear headrests would be cool too.
Must keep active on German ebay... winkeye

Anyway, this brings my eta post up-to-date, as this is pretty much how my 325e looks nowadays...

@ boxclever1753

Can't agree more...
Electric windows is indeed on the to-do-list.
However, I just need to figure out what I'm going to do about the holes left in the door cards?? For the later E30's electric windows meant door cards with no holes, but on this year the holes were left there, but I need to find OEM round plastic covers in Perlbeige, which I recon is going to be close to impossible...!!
But as I've already swapped the regular antenna with a brand new OEM electric one, it would indeed be cool!! Next step would of course then be OEM central locking. Hmm... and then I guess there'll be no stopping before the sunroof is also operated electrically...!!
Oh bollocks!! See what you just did.... :chuckle: It's never going to end is it...

And thanx Mani... :)

Thanks for sharing this car with us. It didn't look very appealing in the first couple of pics, but i could tell it had potential, only didn't realise how much!

Excellent choice of parts, however i think it would look better on stock weaves, i have a nice set if you fancy a swap :D

Cheers mate. I really love the Perlbeige too. I know it's not to everyones taste, but imo it's a more pleasant place to be than with the more usual dark grey or black interiors.
Need to get my drivers seat fixed though as there's the usual annoying wear on the bolster of the drivers seat.

When behind the wheel of a standard eta, one quicly adapts a very laidback driving style... 8)

Image

*EDIT* Just for all you UK residents, the speedo is of course km/h, so 80 km/h is approx 50 mph... Still not overly stressed at only 1500 rpm and still pulling clean in 5th even up steep hills. :)

Cheers mate!! :D
I guess I really ought to get some pics of my classic BMW's into the "Other BMW chat" section. After all, you're not the first one to ask...

But for now you'll all have to settle with just another small update on my eta:

I've always liked the "coachline" striping on the 325i M-Tech I - erhm... or the '86 - '87 BMW 325i Sport as you guys call it in the UK...
But it was quite clear that the regular all black or black over silver stripping was not really going to suit my Karminrot eta. Instead I found that BMW Individual have the same coachline stripping in gold. Awesome!! My mates thought I'd finally lost my marbles when I told them I was going to fit gold strips on my E30. But I was convinced it would compliment the gold-centered BBS and the beige interior, while being a good contrast to the dark Karminrot. Anyway, bought the stripes quite some time ago, but finally got around to fitting them the other day. First of course I did a bit of detective work, and found that while the stripes were standard on the M-Tech I which came with the '86-model, the same stripes were actually also available as an option on the earlier models. But strangely, while the stripes were fitted just above the waistline profile on E30's after 09/85, they were actually fitted bellow this profile on the series 1 E30's. My eta being produced 07/85 and me being such a OEM-freak I obviously had to fit them accordingly...

A few detailed pics of the gold coachline stripes:

It's obviously quite a subtle little change, but perfection lies in the detail... :P
What's the verdict??

I'm trying to do something similar with my 86 4 door (although my wheels won't be so bling!), done the interior and mechanical bits, now looking at the outside which hopefully will include a "Jimmy Hill" spoiler, agree with you 100% on the Tech 1 kit.

Did your pinstripes come from BMW? I'd hate to lose mine when I get the paint done (mine being above the waistline...). I've never understood the codes for the colours.

I did get Indigo blue door panel window winder blanks from BMW, cheap too at about a fiver each. So you might get pearl beige ones still.
These are sensations as hard to forget as they are to ignore.....

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is a "Jimmy Hill" spoiler?? :?

The wheels are bling, but they're "period bling" so that's OK

My car is Cosmosblau and the coach lines are silver over black.
