He's really spoiling the car with them but each to their own.
To be fair, everybody's view of metrics is based on tyres that are probably ten years old.

Have you driven an E24 on 415 TRXs that are new - and I mean new, as in manufactured within the last year? Most TRXs, no matter how good they look are actually old tyres - even new ones are most often old stock.

They harden badly with age and become utterly crap, but a brand newly manufactured set is probably the best tyre for an E24. They're a great combination of ride and roadholding - good enough for Ferrari and XJ12s too. It's just that it's very hard to justify £300 per corner when their performance drops so severely from "brilliant" to "crap" after two years even if you've only done 500 miles.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that everybody should be using them, but they are unfairly maligned as shite, when they are really good tyres - for a few months. They're certainly not ruining his car. They're enhancing it - for now - he'll need to buy new in two years again, probably won't and then it's downhill.

so they are crap, why bother when you can buy really good tyres that are still really good after 3 years?! i e normal ones.

He was quite proud that he waits for michelin to make a new batch and then bend over and pay £450 for a pair!

I don't need to drive on them to know the sidewalls are very stiff and really don't suit the trailing arm set up that olskool bmw's use, makes the car skitty and an unsettled on bumpy roads.

Theres being original and theres using your loaf and a bit of logic.

I wouldn't and haven't put them on my cars, to be honest. They are still a great tyre new and the fact that their life is detemined chronologically rather than by mileage wasn't an issue when the cars were doing 10000 miles plus a year, now, 25 years later, and when they do 1000 miles a year, there are definitely better tyres to use.

TRXs aren't crap though.

I don't agree that they don't suit the car either. They're a good ride/handling compromise - even on an M635.

I do agree that they're a total waste of money now. Toyo proxes at £85 a corner were great on the M635.

My first car was a P6 , does that make me a paedo ? :)

The P5 is the big old '58 to '73 rover saloon and coupe The 'B' suffix applies to all the '67 onwards V8 cars, coupe or saloon . B referring to Buick as the all aluminium V8 was originally known as the Buick 215. 215 being the engine displacement in cubic inches.

I must go, my beard needs trimming ! :D
P6s were always P6s p5 and p5bs were a different class again
