I am indeed a short blonde chubster (15st I checked last night! My g/f needs to stop feeding me), and I make a generalisation that the majority of people who pick on drifting as not being proper or whatever generally just tootle around then occasionally drive fast on the roads or do a track day and get all scared. I know full well there are plenty of good drivers and the best drivers in the world certainly aren't drifters, but I make a generalisation - as most people do who see drifting :)

No need to be insulted, I'm sure you could "give me a drive round the nurburgring - no sweat", hopefully one day next year I can afford to go over in my car (would probably borrow an LSD though if I could as a welder wouldn't be as good at the ring) and we can all have a laugh about how the internet brings out the worst in people :)

I've got no chips on any shoulders, I just have my hobby and go about it the only way I can (in a cheapo car), and naturally get defensive when people make out we are some kind of parasite. I can't speak on behalf of my fellow TD members obviously but that is the way I see it.

Fankayou.

guys cut the crap will ya
MJG has a cheap car for his hobby (which he does well in against much more expensive machinery)

the way some guys on here are acting towards him and that scene you are gonna turn this place
into another car club or elitist forum that will die suddenly

and I for one dont want to see that happen

so sort yourselves out and appreciate what each other is doing and get on with things
after all its all about the e30

been reading this off and on. AJ took me over to the drift area and it didn't do it for me . As a form of motor sport it's still a unknow entitie. I can't do what you guys can with a car and i will take my hat off to you for doing something you enjoy.

Some people like the drag racing other like to do tracks, unfortianatly for me I have been advised not to do stuff that can put my back under strain as I have the risk of causing further damage to a set of nerves. The enjoyment I get from e30 is restoring them, tweaking the cosmetics and trying to have to picture perfect car. But it seems I get labeled as being a snoob or I am not passionate about my hobby.

A good number of the zoner know I have put alot of effort in keep my cab with authentic parts and add ons but from my reading of your posts my passion is not worthy. I also hope to next year to have my Alpina in concorse events and I always show my support by putting zone banners in my windows.

The zone is filled with many different types of enthusiastes, so the point I am try to make is don't claim your being sterotyped when your post come across sterotyping the aspect I enjoy. Goes both ways. Finally I am open minded enough to go to one of your drifting events, you can educate me on the subject, but would you do the same if the rolls were reversed?

I don't mind people not liking my car lol, I don't like it at the moment as I didn't even have a front bumper un-broken enough to put on, and I hadn't finished my front arches. I just don't think it's right that everyone makes stuff up to have a jab at drifting or whatever, it's just a fun thing to do in our cars :D

Thanks anyway though :)

I am being serious when I said I would be intrested in you showing me more stuff about the compition side and I like to try and understand your passion alot better.

I can't do what you guys do and it's not the kind of thing I would do in a really rare Alpina anyway but I would like to learn what is needed and just get a greater understanding

Well anyone is happy to talk at drift days etc, or a good read on driftworks will help you get the jist of it. Competitions are generally run as solo judged runs then the top 16 normally go for "twin battles" where the lead car and chase car take it in turns in each position, chase car has to try and mirror the line of the lead car but with more angle, more smoke, and more precision all whilst getting as close as possible. The lead car should try and pull away from the chase car whilst drifting with more angle, more smoke, more precision etc. With two top drivers the battles can be fantastic to watch, regardless of your personal interest, two cars sideways at 80mph+ whilst like a foot or 2 away from eachother is very impressive visually and even more exciting when you are part of it :D

Kind of like car figer skating ( not taking the piss )

I was not really impressed with the drifting at Santapod as they all seemed to be bad at it. the sport/art of drifting to me seems like you just go out and trash the nutts of the car. I never knew it has this chase thing and points system.

I have found people in drifing have alot of slang terminolagy which I don't understand so I always felt very alienated by the drifting forums and the whole scean.

Felix - yep like figure skating or freestyle motocross or whatever. Most people at santa pod were terrible yeah, even I did shit that day thanks to having zero practice and AGAIN having a new suspension/fuel set up and only having a few runs :(

Santa pod is a crap place to watch real drifting, there were only a handful of decent drivers there and then most of us (hehe) were in shit cars. You want to get to a BDC event or similar to appreciate it better. Slang in drifting is just because it's an obscure sport so abnormal things become the norm and then the descriptions of them become shorter. Also due to Irish and Japanese influences there is sometimes terminology used from both of them. It's not that bad really, but then again I've been into drifting for nearly 4 years so I might not realise what is a weird nickname or not lol.

Law - thanks :)

Let me know when a good event is happening near Oxford ( silverstone ect ) and I would be happy to come along and let you explain things to me better. I'll even bring some of those holy pull ties for you.

I'm not a great lover of Jap cars like the RX7 which is why I he a pre conceved dislike I guess. I am still stunned that something that is about skill and grace of controlling a car that people use what I call fugly cars. Do you think once the sport grows and more money is seen in the sport that the cosmetics of the cars will improve?

I'm slowly working towards an attractive e30 myself, but for the most part drifting is cursed as people all just want to copy the Japanese style rather than thinking for themselves about what looks good. I love RX7s and with the right styling most Nissans can look awesome imo but the right styling never gets used so they all just look like stupid toy cars.

I'd never be a fan of drifting, but I love being involved with it myself and trying to rewrite the rules a little :D

From my point of view I love E30's for their looks and the sound. I have owned a very nice MX-5 Vspecia which wanted the back end to go out all the time.

Also an RX-7 is a Mazda :P

The one thing I do like about your car is the fact it does not have a shopping list on the side like most people I have seen doing this.l

There always two side tot he argument on this. My father and I spent 3 hours on the saturday cleaning and polishing my cab to show how the E30 is still a show worthy car.

Also with the BMW CC there I wanted to prove that the zone and E30's are not 2p cars. I admitted I do not know anything about drifting and MJG have been very polite to me and has explained things on the thread.

I thas a reason why it looks like it is but making it a centre peace next to cars that people have spent hours to make them look stunning is nt really fair on both parties. My cab was at the other end with AJ's 318is , we both had spent time when we arrived to tidy the cars up to set a example for the zone.

How the cars were displayed could have been better ins ome peoples eyes. Just because I enjoy spending the time to make my E30 look clean and tidy ( even with fubar rear archers ) doe not give me any less passion about what I do. But When you was goign along we had our 2 Alpina tourings , Cliffy babes chrome monster and the rat mobile. I know alot of work by the zone mods went into this and by no means I want to seem ungreatfull for the efforts but I think it could have been doen better.

I think we should have had the best cars on one side of the marque on a plynth with the write up about it and then on the other side the rat mobile with a write up about what it was.

I now understand why the car looked like it did but I find it is a common excuse too often used by people to have a rough lookin car. MJG has told me about the sport/art and I am willing to offer my support because I know he would do the same for us show and dhine people.

Edit - before reading this, I wasn't trying to have a go, I understand you're being perfectly good about it all, this may come out more bitchy than I actually mean :D

I think most people with rough looking cars do just use the "I prefer to use it" bullshit, but that's the actual truth with me lol. It took us a couple of days to make the rear arches and they aren't finished yet, but that was a couple of days. Alongside the couple of days worth of prep and paint doing that damn camo. Plus about a day to put my fuel tank in, along with all the hours and days and weeks spent throughout the year getting my car sorted and modified to make it work better for the rounds of drifting this year. I think the "we spent hours cleaning it in the morning" is actually a bit silly myself, obviously I appreciate the look and effort etc, but trying to say your car shouldn't be seen with mine because you've spent a few hours cleaning it is a bit short sighted. If I rolled up in an e30 I welded the diff on and crashed into everything then fair play, but I've spent more time than I could count on my car and countless damaged knuckles/arms and every penny I had. I don't take kindly to people thinking I don't put work into my car because it doesn't have shiny paint.

On the flip side we spent 3 hours that morning but I have also spent a very large sum of money and time to get my car to a condition that it would do a show.

My car has had to have so much engine work done to keep it orginal and I would gues over all my father and I have spent 50+ hours on getting what was a badly abused cab to a standard that people want to stop and ask about my car.

I'm not one to moan but when we pust the same amount of time in to making our cars look right as you do making it for drifting we are bound to get upset.
