Is there a chart or table that lists what does what?

Would be a great bloody help in fixing and retro-fitting a lot of things no?

dont know about colours, but each loom has a tab with a pert number on it

www.realoem.com is good for finding part numbers at least!

I think virtually everything is just plug in, never had to do any soldering on an e30. though i will have to solder in some original radio connections where someone had chopped a random connector in!

Thanks - I use the online ETK myself.

What I really need to know is what colours do what on each loom - is there anywhere to get that info?

try this link,

http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17

download the .pdf files and see if they're any use. The wiring diagrams are for US spec cars, so I'm not sure if the same colours were used for UK spec cars. But these diagrams did help me diagnose a problem with my wiring that I wouldn't ever have traced on my own

Having trouble getting them.

I would mainly like to know 2 things. Correct way to wire in an illuminated gear knob.

And also what the heated seat loom is made up of at the supply to seat end.

Correct way to wire in an illuminated gear knob is to replace the connectors to the cigarette lighter bulb with a small loom that has both a new set of connectors to the lighter bulb, and a socket for the gear knob to plug in to.
Don't really understand your second question, but the heated seat loom takes it's power from socket U (top row, immediately to the right of the radio sockets) of the accessories socket at the back of the glovebox.
BMW loom colours: Brown = earth, or brown/orange on the engine loom.
Red = permanent live, unfused
Purple = first ignition position, unfused
Green = second ignition position, unfused
Fused supplies are logical extensions of the above. I.E. A fused permanent live will be red with a trace colour.
Most wires with a red trace will be one that something happens if you apply power to it. I.E. brake light wire is green/red. - apply power to it and the brake lights illuminate.
Most wires with a brown main colour and a trace will be one that something happens if you earth that wire. I.E. Interior light wire is brown/purple, and the interior lights illuminate if you earth it.

Awesome!

Many thanks - surely it would be useful to have a full chart of these colours somewhere?

Where do I get that loom? Should it come with the know? If I had to make one, what's the best way?
