hey guys

just bought this 318i 1991 on an "H". for the bargain price of Ԛ£270....

but just discovered that power steering fluid is leaking out from the gaitor on the steering rack....and when on full lock it REALLY drips out and there is an awful noise.

how much do you reckon a rack replacement will be (if that is what i need) with labour?

cheers

That's a dead rack allright.
Bought an exchange one a few years ago for Ԛ£160-00, IIRC.
Easy enough to fit on, but fluid needs to be thoroughly flushed afterwards, and tracking will need to be done.
Cheapest option is to source a manual steering rack from a scrapyard and fit that. 318 engine is fairly light, and as long as you don't put silly tyres on it, the loss of power steering won't be any great problem.

I've heard talk of a filter before, but I've never found one.
If it exists, it will be in the bottom of the resevoir, under the plate in the bottom.
What colour is your fluid? It should be a nice clear deep red colour.
If it's grey you need to replace and flush it.
Remove what fluid you can from the resevoir with a large syringe, disconnect the resevoir and totaly clean it out. Blank off the return pipe of the resevoir, reconnect the feed pipe and fill it with fluid.
Pull the return pipe down below the car and into a large bowl. (wife's washing up bowl is ideal). Disconnect one of thr LT connections to the coil, and turn the engine over on the key, while turning the steering wheel from lock to lock, and at the same time have someone keep the resevoir topped up.
Keep doing this untill you get clean fluid coming through.
You will need a few litres of fluid to do the job properly.

If you want it to stay that way, then get it changed!
