Can't say what the cost is, but if this is the problem then more than likley the head has to come off to do the job. Havn't done these on a six cylinder yet but most other engines require the head to come off, the valves to be removed, the seals renewed, the valves refitted and lapped in, and the head refitted with new head gasket and usually a new timing belt if the old one has a few miles on it. Maybe someone else on here has had the job done and can give an accurate price. Living in southern Ireland the garages around here use a complicated priceing structure for labour, think of a figure and double it !

most m20's smoke from cold. so long as its white and NOT blue or black/brown then you should ok. not sure if changing the stem seals would make that much difference, if so it may still not stop it totally.
stem seals often give off smoke on overrun. accelerate hard (when warm) upto about 6000RPM and then back right off tghe throttle, ask someone to follow you when you do this and see if there is any smoke comes out then. if not then there might not be anything wrong with the stem seals.
hope that helps a bit.
