if its hunting it usually means the carb it shot, the pierburg carbs on them are terrible and best to be fitted with a weber replacement carb, just baught one for mine they just bolt straight on and do away with all the electric stuff which the pierburg has on making it less troublesome :D

if its tappty you might have to adjust your tappets :D

might be the case but there not very economical anyway the weber replacement should improve economy you could try ebay but your best bet is to start a thread in the wanted section on here thats where i got mine it cost me £25 the only downside with it is you need a manual choke :D

Hi, You can use a carb from a VW Golf/jetta etc 1.8 (as long as it's the weber one). The Pierburgs are rubbish.
Adjusting the tappets is easy if you have three hands and know how. Though it usually takes a few times to work out how to do it properly. Haynes manual describes how. Weber 32/36 DGV upgrade is good for a few extra ponies. But standard you should be getting about 28/30MPG so don't expect it to get any better:D

Your timing chain or tensioner might be making a lot of your noise.
Cheers gerry
