Hi, my E30 320i (manual) shakes a bit from side to side when idling (small amount) and at approx 2.5k revs an odd noise can be heard coming from the timing belt area (I had this changed last year) - any ideas? I want to get it looked at but don't want to be ripped-off. I'd like to have some idea what the problem is before I take it somewhere. Thanks!

2 suggestions.....

1)the viscous fan/coupling might be shagged

2)the engine mountings might be shot to bits! (this would only explain the shaking, not the noise though.

Sorry i cant be more helpful at the mo, but ive had a mad day and my brain has gone on strike!

oh, other than those 2, the water pump may be objecting and may need changine (Ԛ£21.50 from German Swedish French)

What Scott said, and also did you have the tensioner changed when the timing belt was done? This can also screech, also alternator bearings and P/S pump bearings.

With regards to the shaking, what is the idle like...steady? Could be an air leak causing a lumpy idle and causing the car to shake.

Yeah, the idle is steady according to the rev counter and the performance of the engine is good but the shaking and noise under the hood at certain revs suggest something needs attending to! It had the belt changed last year apparently but no proof of this. Guess I should get it checked-out.

This happened on my old 325 Sport, the drivers side engine mount had literally snapped.

Accerelating past 2.5k revs, it felt like the car was shaking a bit.

Not sure about the noise though.

Because the engine wasn't on the mount, it had moved forwards so much that the fan wasn't turning and it would get hot in traffic!

Careful!!
