1. As above, is it very difficult to change it? I am really willing to try to do this by myself-but if it is a mission then will have to pay.

2. Can I fit an e36 318is engine on my e30-IS?

Thanx

e36 engine will fit but you have to change the sump, cam shaft cover, exhaust manifold and may be the spigot bearing depanding on your input shaft all very easy especially as you have an e30 318is engine

Well i think the chain should be easy enough to do, but you are looking at around Ԛ£300 in parts from bmw.

Its a nightmare to do!!

We ended up having to machine up bits and pieces, the oil flows through the timing housing in a different direction so some drilling and hole blocking was required. The rocker cover needed cutting, drilling and an insert fitted so the breather pipe could connect as m42 intake chamber in way. Crank timing sensor on pulley on m44 not at the bottom so i had to make up a bracket. The m42 has 1 temp sensors in block m44 has 2 therefore i don't have a working temp gauge atm (soon to rectify)!!

The list goes on!! lol

Glad i did but wouldn't have done it out of choice!! lol

Really is a sweet engine, mine only had 42k on the clock and purrs like a pussy cat. Its running mid 150's for power although fueling is messed up as engine and management not happy together .. with the remap hoping for 170 bhp :) m42 fly on the m44 lump acts like a lightened fly and revs up very quickly :) always sweet!

Finally getting there with the fine adjustments now. cash ready for the remap :) And new quieter and 'tuned' exhaust.

If you decide to go ahead hope i can help you out!!

Oh and as for time, it took 5 weeks spending a few hours a night doing it as when we thought we were nearly there we came across another obsticle!! We being myself and my dad ... he loves doing this stuff although siad he'd never do that again! lol spose thats saying something.

If you went to a garage it would add up as off the pure hours involved and you'd need to trust them so they don't say this and that needed doing and took x hours when really it didn't just to milk you for some more cash

GSF car parts sell a new chain for Ԛ£35.00 + VAT , sprokets Ԛ£3.50 + VAT each (from Eurocarparts), I dont think I need a new tensioner (bought a new one nearly two years ago). and I will have to check if I need guide rails (D'rail, upper & lower).

I am not sure if a new chain will solve the problem -it imakes a little bit of noise (rattles) -on the other hand there is a guy on ebay who is selling an IS E30 engine with 106000 miles on it, 4 Ԛ£250.
Thanx for all ur ideas & advise

Where are you going for a remap, gonna be using any particular type of management?

pmaddy00 - mine rattled around 3000 rpm before it went bang .... :(

The chain guides were in bits in the bottom of the engine after investigation where the chain wasn't tensioned and then it all went wrong and it jumped teeth ... bend valves etc, never a pretty thing!!

Jimbob, think i will go to Bexleys as there have been some good reports from there and they were most helpfull on rolling road day :)

As for the remap, will prob just get basic chip stuck in although as thinking of going down the MAF route and use a Dastek unit??

Its been 8 months since i was planning all the work, going to start looking back into it but got to get car spot on first.

New gaskets, seals, hoses etc want it to be on top form ...

Ԛ£3.50 for sprokets? are you sure?

What about all the gaskets for the timing cover? Anti freeze? and other bits needed to do the job.

Its not going to cost you Ԛ£35.00 + Ԛ£3.50 + VAT.

It does piss me off when people try and do things on the cheap side you will only be kicking yourself when it all goes tits up.

I know dat, just realised what i wrote ... wrong way round ...

M42 has 2 (2 pin) sensors therefore loom has 2 plugs ... one to gauge one to ecu.

m44 has 1 sensor with 4 pins.

We removed the 4 pin sensor and replaced with the one that feeds the ecu leaving the gauge plug disconnected .. now to get the dash temp working i need to get a signal from that sensor, however if i splice the dash feed from the one to the ecu is it going to afftect the voltage ... most likely soo .... what to do.

Need to get wiring diagram for m44, use the m44 sensor and cut the plugs off the m42 loom and connect correspondingly .... all together a lot of hastle, i can live with no temp as i always keep water in and the heater gets v hot if its overheating! :)

Demlotcrew: Didnt mean to piss u off-only asking for ideas & advise, and the price listed above are from the Company's site-but just phoned and they said they dont do sprockets. I know I need more bits for the job-but if u paid a bit more or less to have this job done -thats fine-ur idea & advise will be very welcome.

Cheers
