Just checking your process for filling the system here. When the car was originally filled with coolant was it on a good flat and level surface and the bleed screw left open until coolant run out? Did all the hoses get hot and the system cycle before you replaced the expansion tank cap?

expansion tank is situated in the radiator? basicaly when i put the engine in my turing.. filled it with water on my drive, lef to get to temperature, then bleed teh air out untill non bubbly water comes out of bleed valve then keep water topped up whilst screwing nipple back up..? do you reccomend pressure bleeding it ie sticking a hose strigh in the expansion? im contemlating droppingall the water out of it and starting again

The 318is expansion tank is the small header tank you are filling up with coolant on the side of the radiator. Did you have the heater temperature control set all the way to hot when you started to fill the system?

Ah there's your problem then, unless the heater temperature control is set to hot the heater matrix will not get filled and will just be one big air bubble. Get draining :D

Interesting, would this tecnique be the one to use on an M20 325i engine aswell, as I changed the thermostat on mine the other day and didnt do all that.

Yes it applies to the 325i too.

Turn the temp regulator to fully hot and switch on the ignition whilst you are refilling the system.
