hola!
right ive embarked on my first major mechanical expedition (for me) by replacing the thermo housing as the inlet pipe at the bottom had sheered off.
now, it all went really well up until the point i realised i had 2 extra threaded holes in it  these holes are the same diameter as the brown temp sensor and i would suspect it would be for something simmilar.
have i been sold the wrong part here? i really cant be arsed the take it all out again drive 20 miles and then replace it all over again and so i was wondering if there was a way to resolve this problem with a cap or something similar, anyone know the diameter of the brown sensor?

any ideas would be great

regards

Can you nip down to the scrappy and get another sensor? Then just use it as a plug?

that was my first thought, one of the holes is above the thermostat and im sure it would be a bit long, dya reckon cutting a bit off would be ok?

What car is it that you're working on?
My 325 has 2 sensors above the thermostat, so I assume it would fit.

You see I knew some one would have a pic like that. I'd never noticed that it has blanking bolts. Don't have to go outside now :D

Blu Tac? Chewing gum??

You may laugh but Alan Clarke once "fixed" a RR Silver ghost which had a hole in the block with chewing gum, then saw it 6 months later after it had had a respray still with chewing gum on the block.
The cooling systems on old Rollses were quite lowly pressurised.

yep, thanks alot mate, nuts are well and truly screwed  i owe you a  or 2 :D

slightly concerned about the white smoke coming out the rearthough, left it running for about 20 mins and it didnt clear up :(
btw this may sound a stoopid question but how tight should the coolant cap be? after a few minuits of running, if its not tight water comes out the over flow pipe :? ive got heat coming out of the blowers and the temp sits around the middle. am i just worryin over nothing here (please say yes, please say yes, please say yes, please say yes,)

btw you goin to the midlands meet?

YES!

probably... I'm guessing by you posts that the car has been sat and not run for a few days in cold weather conditions.

This will cause loads of condensation in the exhaust system, the only way to stop the white smoke is actually drive the car.

Sounds like its sorted. (You did bleed the system, didn't you)

Re coolant cap: What colour is the plastic disc on the bottom of the cap?
It should be yellow, was the subject of a recall many years ago. If it's black then get it changed for the new type. I have had several from my local dealer FOC over the years, the last one being about eighteen months ago.
They will need your VIN to check.

I usually bleed my cars with the engine running, I'm not sure of the BMW bona fide procdure on an E30 but it seems to work well on them.

It will probably give you a little more confidence in the water system if you double check it, us E30-ers seem to like doing things absolutley spot on.
